My Unforgettable 3 Days At The Nitto ATP Finals In Turin
I spent 3 days in Turin for the end of year Nitto ATP Finals. I’ve been to the o2 a few times for this event but not since it moved to Italy in 2021, so I was really excited to see what it was like!!
I kicked Novak Djokovic off his practice court, got to chat with Wimbledon Champion, Neal Skupski and share my breakdown of the final between Novak and Sinner!
3 days I will never forget!

Just wanted to mention that I think I hear a dog snoring in your voiceover audio. :) Loved your detailed insights, especially the one about Djokovic requesting specific shot shapes; noticed he did this in practice videos taken at the recent Australian Open too.

great post and I love the film of the final .... it's so exciting to see those kind of perspectives because the normal view for television lacks the power and precision of the playing ... when you are court side you see how dang fast those balls are flying!

Hi Ashley, brilliant content! Love the fact that you also break down some of the matches tactically. What do you think decided their (Sinner Djokovic) match in the Davis Cup? Did you see Sinner trying something else is his return games. Was he 'just' serving better himself? I'm curious is you noticed anything. Me personally would love to see you do more tactical breakdowns.

It's interesting you'd suggest Sinner to stand closer when returning Djokovic's serves. I think that for most people when having difficulties returning serves with pace and hard to read placements, the more natural thing to do is to back off further. Nadal is a prime example of having great success neutralizing great serves by standing further away. Sinner just got a win over Djokovic in the Davis Cup Final. He started by trying to hug the baseline when returning the Djokovic serves, to no avail. Then he started to back off a good distance away and was able to break Djokovic twice in the first set and once in the 3rd set. It seems to me that he found the sweet spot position at returning was a key factor in his victory. Federer was one of the few who would refuse to back off no matter what. But even Federer would give away far too many free points to the Djokovic serves because he liked to stand too close to the baseline. As a strong baseliner, Sinner would probably benefit more by backing off further when having difficulties returning serves.

You make good points. Moving back would give Jannik more time and in lots of circumstances this would help, but it also gives Novak more space (which is why I felt that Novak was winning his serving points in Turin. I felt that Jannik could have ‘closed in’ a little (not necessarily for his setup - as Novak could have added pace and hit more body serves) but during the serve motion taken a step in to reduce Novak’s angles. When your opponent is ‘finding the spots’, mixing up your return position can be a good tactic. I didn’t get to watch the Davis Cup match but sounds like he did mix it up a little. After the final, Jannik’s team would have given him some info (maybe using some data) to help him on the return. And without seeing his Davis Cup match, he would have started the match with their tips. But Novak has answers to most things and would have adjusted his serve, which then in turn Jannik would have to adjust to! Tennis is all about problem solving and it seemed that the one problem he didn’t solve in the final was Novak’s serve… maybe he was nervous, or maybe Novak was just too good on the day!?

And the court was lightening quick... which is a servers dream. If your not making returns.... change it up. Going back will just mean more aces on a quick court.. ??@@TheTennisMentor

Djokovic was playing at his best that day, and Sinner was at probably a notch below his best, as evidenced by his numerous unforced errors from the baseline and also his double faulting at the match point.
