I drive a Volt now, but I'd trade it for an ELR in an instant. What a cool car, and very unique among the sea of Model 3s.

You need to drive a 2016. One model year only but they made incredible updates. Dual ev motors up front, reduced 0-60 by 1.5 seconds, more ev range, performance package with an amazing suspension and bremos, new steering, full speed adaptive cruise, CarPlay and more. It’s the one to get. Elevates an already great vehicle. Make sure to look up the 2016 press release. You’ll be shocked with how much was changed.

All ELRs (and first gen Volts too) already have dual motors and a strange transmission, it's there to increase efficiency at high speeds in EV mode. 2014 also had adpative cruise as an option (and it is definitely worth getting lol). But yes, 2016 does have better performance and range, and you can apparently also get A.A with an update. It also has a better looking grille and the new badges (although they're easy enough to replace on the 2014 except for the airbag).

Hi Dave...I own a 2014 ELR and its an amazing vehicle! I get looks all the time about what it is when I bring it to my local car show here in New Jersey! A few thing..the engine light you are seeing is actually just saying when you are using engine power it is just an icon with the arrow to the right and there will be a meter showing engine power. I would check the lifetime Ii thinks its MPG in the center info display the higher the number the more it was run on just electric alone. Check the heat while on electric. Mine has not heat on electric only. It is a simple fix with a replacement of the aux water pump located behind the passenger front wheel well...your volt may have the same issue as well. Regarding the lockout of the Hold feature...might be that it needs new gas...this car is very finicky with the gas the FMM can be a pain. Here is the link to my video i did about my car kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nrB8ZriDs8i1gmw.htmlsi=a5Eo3SeLtivhIWBU

I don't recall Hold mode being inhibited with ERDTT (Engine Running Due To Temperature), but a possible reason. Another possibility would be a mandatory engine maintenance cycle between long periods without engine operation, this usually pops up as a message. Otherwise, an engine running with a usable battery charge is a serious warning sign. Also, that's not a check engine light. That display is identical with Gen 2 Volts, its just an icon lable for the engine operation side of the display.

I remember when the ELR was sold, but its price was too high, almost the price of a Model S 60D if I remember, so the ELR never really got popular, and was almost DOA.

The ELR was always a good looker and the style has held up. They had huge discounts as they were way overpriced when new. For as few of them that were made, there were many that sat on lots for over a year. I remember seeing up to around $25k discounts on these as they just could not move them.

The ELR was always a beautiful car, and still looks modern today. With a little bit of detailing, this example could be in showroom condition. The engine running with 20 miles EV range, and possible check engine light, need to be addressed, but maybe it would be an inexpensive fix (or maybe not). BTW, the ELR did not have the 38 mile range that the Volt had, IIRC. The wider performance tires, and maybe some other differences (aero drag?) are the cause. It does have a bit more performance than the Volt, but unlike the Volt, the ELR needs both engine and battery to get max acceleration. As beautiful as the ELR is, the cargo and passenger space is compromised severely vs. the Volt. Combined with much higher pricing and lower EV range that makes the Volt the better car for most people. However, as an extra car for short trips the ELR would be awesome.

The clicking you heard when applying the brakes was probably due to broken ant-click washers in the front hubs. We had to have one replaced in our Volt at around 90K miles. It's a common problem that I believe also affects the Cruz, and other GM cars using the same axles.

Nice review Dave, to me it’s appears as if you were still in ‘L’ brake regeneration lockup on the shifter perhaps despite the mode choice on screen via the steering wheel. Looking at the top info-display screen the ‘L’ was highlighted the entire time you were driving so the car fighting the drive tour mode and believe if can produce such brake feelings as you described as you got going . Remember there are two regen paddles behind the wheel too for instant choice ‘locking’ the car up as if going downhill. Anyway keep up the good work and was impressed with your Volt find and reviewing both these GM offerings verse all the new stuff🫡

It's a beautiful car. I think that the idea of an electric motor powered vehicle with a gas engine back up might be the best way to transition to full EV for today's market. Too bad GM didn't stick with it.

My 2017 Volt Premiere has the collision warning system, but it's only the visual and audio alerts. No vibrating butt. I do get heated seats and steering wheel as well, whit the leather seats. It's a NICE car. I'm afraid of the BECM failure killing it though. We're pretty active on /r/volt

Must be a Cadillac feature as our 2018 CT6 2.0E plug-in with Voltec has thr vibrating seat. It us nice feature compared to audible tone as no one in the car can hear it. Unless this ELR has had coolant level sensor this probably a single traction battery cell dropped out of range. Interesting it looks to be taking a charge though.

The ELR is a classic example of how GM killed the Cadillac brand. It was a rebadged Chevy at twice the price. I'm old enough to remember when the word Cadillac meant premium/top of the line. GM started rebadging Chevys in the 80s and since then Cadillac has lost all of its cachet. Today nobody buys Cadillacs, luxury buyers stick to German brands.

I'd be wary of this one when the engine kicks on over 35F. It could be that the temp. sensor is reading lower than what is displayed on the dash. The Volt (and I'm assuming the ELR) will kick on the engine if temperatures are below or around 35F. Since it looks like it had over 50% battery, it should not kick on. The Gen 2 Volt allows you to defer when the engine kicks on down to 15F and the MY 2019 Volt would let you go even lower. I'm not sure if the ELR allowed you to do that. You will find in the volt forums that the Gen 1 Volts don't have many issues with the amount of miles on them but the biggest problem is battery age and around 10-12 years old a couple of cells may go below the allowable threshold and not allow you to charge. There is a TSB for this on the Volt but not sure on the ELR. There are NO batteries available to replace them except used ones.

Don’t buy unless under $10K because repairs will be expensive. That looks like a check engine light. Put it in a warm garage to see if engine stops at a higher temperature. Personally, I would never buy a vehicle that requires trips to the gas station. We are looking forward to you getting hybrids out of your system and moving back to BEVs.
