My son recently cancelled me for my political views. My views are the same as I've had forever: liberal socially (I don't care what other people do in the privacy of their own home), conservative in every other way. It was heart breaking when he walked out during our argument. Later, he sort of apologized to me, but gave me a kind of lecture about my stupid old views. I am a lawyer, and I tried to explain that it was important not to throw out the baby with the bath water. Our civil rights are EVERYTHING. Included among them is the First Amendment. But he is brainwashed. I am so proud of you for being open minded, and listening to other people's thoughts. William Friedman! You need to read William F. Buckley, Jr. He was so ahead of his time. Read his book, 'Four Reforms.' He has a lot of other amazing books. You'll be amazed at his ideas. If we'd only done this in the '70s, imagine what we could be now! In any case, you are amazing. Don't back down!

I had a similar experience with a friend of mine, and all I did was give him facts. It wasn't like I had a difference of opinion it was plain facts.

When I eventually have kids, I'm going to make it my duty from the day they walk into school to ask them what they are taught because I just know it's going to be indoctrination, and then give them an alternative view etc. Sorry to hear about that story, the reason education needs extensive reform to make kids think for themselves and create their own perception of the world and politics as a whole Instead of the political establishments view.

I'm Mexican, living in Mexico. This is the same everywhere. I #WalkAway from leftist/marxism ideas about 2010, maybe sooner. The leftist combo of ideas make me angry and depressed, and then I see that it is a kind of a cult. You can speak almost with everyone and friendly disagree on things, but when you disagree with a lefty/socialist they get mad and want to destroy you. It is crazy. @@cccycling5835 Socilism is why young children no longer work around dangerous machinery for pennies a day. It is why Americans only work 40 hours a week it is why we get paid overtime. It is why there are emergency exits and fire escapes. America already has many socialist policies some for more than 100 years and none of the horrible stuff you idiots promise will happen has happened yet. You should follow your own advice and learn American history.

I walked away years ago when the Left started caring more about illegals than decriminalizing marijuana. Also, just look at what the Left has become. No respect for anyone, even themselves. i was born and raised in iraq. I am a refugee living in the Netherlands. a muslim girl. During the Obama, Hillary and Biden presidencies, many of my families died of bombing, more than 500,000 children died, and more than 2,000 people died from drone strikes. I went to see Trump's press conferences myself every day. Thank you for sharing your story here. I am an immigrant from Taiwan for 47 years almost, this wasn't what l thought l would live to see the Democratic people could hate their own country so deep that they just wanted to rip this country apart. I hope they will wake up to how blessed they are to have a country still have the freedom to debate and to share their differences of their opinions, however with the recent unrest thugs and lootings, killing the innocent children from their violence, it's heartless, soulless, cowerly deeds to express their disagreement with the conservative people. Wake up America, it'll be way too little too late if one day you find yourself in a Socialism government, this will be the beginning the Communism and there won't be any evidence of freedom to speak of, because, the Communist government is TOTALITARIAN GOVERNMENT! All the rights will be stripped away from the citizens. I pray this country will survive through this trying time and triumphant from all the hatred, and reunited with one and another. Together we stand, apart we fall! God help us all!

For some reason I am getting lots of "walkaway" videos recommended and I've noticed some commonalities between them, and I'm sure others have noticed....this gentleman and all the others seem to be calm and well-spoken individuals who love this country and can think for themselves. All people I'd want to hire. Not people who come running to me with every problem but people who can think independently and give me SOLUTIONS to the issues they see. My GF came from Vietnam and is now a very successful naturalized citizen. BLOWS HER MIND to see the Democrats embrace the failed communist ideology she fled and express such hatred for this country. So she is totally voting Trump this year as will all her Asian friends, most of whom never voted before but will be this year.

As an old-school, traditional journalist who believed in and practised objectivity, ethics, fairness and real news reporting, I became superfluous to modern 'journalism'. Congrats on your walk away. FWIW, I had been a Republican for 20 years. But, I can't say I'm Republican now. Many Republicans have become more and more like Democrats in the past 10-15 years. I call myself a Conservative. Just so happens, the Republicans are the best we got right now. And, surprisingly, Trump is the most conservative president we've had in 20 years.

I remember exactly when I started giving a crap about politics.... I was on a plane coming home from 5 years living in Denmark... just after 9/11. I had just turned 28. I was raised in a Democrat run state so I had voted for Bill Clinton twice prior to leaving for Europe... because that's how my family voted.... I knew NOTHING about any policies or scandals (other than the Lewinski). Lol. Anyway, I continued to vote Democrat after returning home... but never researched past watching CNN. That is EXACTLY what the Democrat party wants.... people voting without actually knowing anything other than their own "crafted" narratives. The truth is that prior to President Trump being elected, our entire political establishment operated in the same fashion. The truth never really mattered. Only votes mattered to career politicians. That hasn't changed a lot with the exception of a few select "good elected officials". The absolute most important thing we can do as American citizens is VOTE FOR TRUMP IN NOVEMBER! President Trump is literally the first president to say it like it is and KEEP PROMISES. We are now in the position to clean up our government like never before. The corruption on BOTH sides has gotten way out of control. President Trump can clean out the crooks. We need to let him!

Loved your testimony! Though we are many years apart, we've traveled the same roads. I also had a great grandfather who made me think, perhaps imparted the possibility of acquiring critical, inquiring thinking to the end of achieving a modicum of wisdom. My family and I were fortunate enough to escape Stalin's socialist/communist utopia as WW2 wound down. Rush Limbaugh is ending a long career, not by choice. We will need to fill the void. God bless.

I'm much along the same lines as you; as I grew older and began thinking more about the rights and privileges I enjoy as an American citizen that are rooted in the Constitutional freedoms we have as American citizens, I became much more conservative in pretty short order. I consider myself more right of center these days than anything else, because in no small part the Left and its increasing radicalization pushed me to it. I used to be much more left wing as well, until I noticed just how insane the Left had gone and I got away from them since I wasn't welcome there among them as a straight white man anyway. I will definitely check out your site and may contribute some writing there, thank you for sharing!

There was a specific Bible qoate about Noah and a rabbi had a lecture on it a few years back, only now I began to understand it. It said something about Noah and "in his generation ", the rabbi explained that it was meant to say that we judge people during their own time frame. Noah was great for his time but may not have been at another time. It applies to what is happening now. Jefferson owned slaves, yes, he did. For his time, he was a great man, maybe not so much by our standards. As we probably will not be so great as future generations, and that's ok. We pave the way, just like Jefferson did. Judge people in their own time frame.

Glad to hear your story! The two points you brought up - weed legalization - this is actually something which majority of Trump supporters are for as well. Check out thedonald DOT win, there's been many posts about legalizing weed. This would reduce crime at the border, take money away from cartels and dealers and bring tax money in, reduce crime plus if alcohol is lega, then so should weed be. A lot of Trump supporters are libertarians - a herb/plant should be legal or at least be rescheduled. As for universal health care - this is not a good thing - firstly it cannot be paid for. Elizabeth Warren's own plan was $54 trillion if I remember right. Plus it doesn't mean free - nothing is free. It's just from tax payer dollars. Plus it would have very long wait times. Canada for example has many month long wait times for even things like knee surgery. Plus US has a very large population. Check out Steven Crowder's segments on health care and myths.

Kinda like that old show "Free to Choose" they had a wide range of people that spoke their positions and thoughts. They would argue but never shut each other down. Universal healthcare is socialized healthcare. This ALWAYS means longer waits for appointments, less time with doctor, and lower quality doctors, and higher costs. Always.

Here's a summary - When I was young I was angry and I didn't know why. Socialism seemed to give me a valid reason to be angry. As I grew up my anger subsided and it allowed me to look at things from all sides. And socialism didn't survive this scrutiny. Fair?

About a universal health care system, I live in Denmark (Scandinavia) and we have "free" health care, tho with a tax rate between 45 and 80% we do actually pay, we just have a 3rd part acting as a middle Man, so to speak, there are pros and cons, the obvious pro is of course that no one is left without health care, another claim is that the cost is lower, but it is not so clear, as the cons begin to kick in over time, imagen how humans consider there job if they are paid by a 3rd part (government) and not directly by the users/customer/patients, both efficiency and quality drops, so do the customers safety, as they are left to take on the State if they are treated bad/wrong, we don`t see million $ lawsuits for malpractice, we experience years and years of struggles for any form of justice and if we get it, it is often more like tens of thousands of $ they receive and btw the doctors or hospitals don`t pay them self, we the taxpayers do ! So IMHO it is not so clear what kind of healthcare is the best, I personally would look to your own Dr. Ben Carson, he have some suggestion on how you could make your own tax free found and use it as you like, or pass it on to your children etc. In my life I have payed about 500,000 us $ in tax and beside free school and free roads, I have only used the hospitals a couple of times and never been there for more then a few hours (Thanks God) and I`m fine with paying a bit for them who don`t have, but it clearly have`t been the best deal for me so fare.
