As a scientist just getting into houseplants I have quickly come to love and respect your common sense based approach! So sick of seeing all the ‘rice/banana/coffee water’, ‘diluted milk’ and ‘Mayo’ posts they make me physically cringe 😢 been at this game for 10 months and following your system my plants are absolutely thriving!! Thank you for bringing common sense into the world of houseplants 😅

No one is asking you to watch those videos. So either you are 'scientist' from suggested fertilizer company or u think people who grew plants before chemical fertilizer era were stupid. All those cringey things that u see come from generations of experience and learning. Your first line itself is ego 'as a scientist' because thats what u use to put others down... One shares chemical fertilizer.. and other humbly share their experiences using recipes passed down from grandparents. N u see common sense in what your limited intellect mind understands. All best growing plants with that rude energy

Jan... The cutest Brad!!... I'm always tempted by his adorable behavior😊... It's okay...long enough duration, visiting your apartement, still feeling motivated by some things. First, every creature needs to drink. You give me good examples so I can understand each plant when watering it. Cool!.. Second, looking out your kitchen window, I can see the vast expanse of the atmosphere. Being tired after being very busy in the kitchen...you look out the window then walking inside enjoying the beautiful plants...while drinking a cup of warm sweet tea. Fun!!... I'm learning so much, writing the names of the plants. Jan...Thank you so much.. I'm proud of you...👍🥰💚😊

Love your videos, love your plants and your passion for them. Now it makes so much sense on why you don't actually water the pots that have a moss pole. Omg I can't believe you left that plant with spider mites just sitting there lol I was freaking out for your other plants lol only because I have been dealing with thrips for a while and just seeing pests puts me into panic mode hahaha. Brad is the cutest by the way. Thanks for all the great information.

I know what you mean, I found spider mites on one of mine the other day and I took every one of them and sprayed them.........I have over 100 houseplants, not including propagations! LOL I thought the same thing when I saw him ......... get it away from the others NOW!! haha. But I am starting to relax a bit, I found a tiny green spider on one the other day and I can't identify it. But I live in FL so we have bugs galore!!!

I used to freak out too but after my most recent outbreak: thrips I've got a better system. I've been washing the leaves with just water and using a fine mister of water a drop of dish soap and neem oil about once every couple weeks. More for new plants. I also wash and repot most new plants immediately to reduce chance of bringing new pests in. Just bought a philo with mealy bugs and no sign of them after a good wash. And the plant the thrips were killing is doing great now (other than being a little crispy around the edges from low humidity)

I'm 35 and just randomly decided to pick up this hobby, and now I have 12 plants in my bedroom and an IKEA Baggebo on the way haha. When I get in to something I tend to get obsessed and go BIG. I have this "nook" in my bedroom from a south-facing Dormer window so it's the perfect spot to grow plants in. Hope to fill it with some monster-sized aroids like yours. :) I also live on a farm with a lot of land so I see a greenhouse in my future! :D

So… I’ve made numerous moss poles and I’ve repotted numerous plants into see-through pots, using your mix. I’m nervous about watering these plants just right bc I would hate to kill them ! I feel silly writing this but … gravity doesn’t always work when I flip the bottle over into the pole. About half the time it just sits there without emptying the water into the pole. I’m still trying to figure out why it worked at times but not at other times. Anyone else have the same problem?

Quite off topic but I really enjoyed seeing that ragged box next to your crawlers. It's something every cat owner will notice instantly. Those darn boxes we keep stumbling over, that always look like sh#* after two weeks (despite a lot of effort given) and that we still love to watch those furry little best-friends sleeping in, shooting us feisty looks because for some reason unknown to us they think they are an imperator 😂

I use clear plastic pots now per your suggestion and see that water stays for several days trapped. Almost wondering if I should drill additional holes in the sides of pots to get more air circulation especially for my root rot prone plants like Monstera Thai Constellation and Hawaiian pothos. Any suggestions? Do you ever use any Hydroperoxine or aquarium bubbler stones with water propagation?
@sydneyplantguy
@sydneyplantguy 5 ай бұрын
I have tried fome h2o2 in my water while propagating and seems to work well :) Personally, I don't find the need to put further holes in the pot as my mix is very chunky but you can never have enough aeration in my opinion (as long as you are willing to water more frequently) :)

How do you keep your poles moist without overwatering the soil because when i use an upside down water bottle it will often run through the moss too quickly and into the soil

This was awesome! I use the same general approach for moss poles. My only issue is I find that if I want the pole to be properly moist, there is almost always water that collects in the cover pots and it gets gross and causes rot on the roots reach down into it (if I don't take the water out every time with a syringe, which is a hassle because the plants are so heavy). Do you ever empty that water or you find it just doesn't get gross?

Is your beautiful queen staying in the IKEA cabinet forever or is she nearly big enough to try outside the controlled environment? I'm nowhere near anthurium level yet, lol😍

Hey man, love your content! Got a question. I've heard you mentioning in a video of yours that you fertilize "weekly-weekly". Does that mean every other week?
@sydneyplantguy
@sydneyplantguy Жыл бұрын
Weakly weekly :) so a week dillution once a week :)

Awesome video! I follow the same weakly weekly watering method with GT fertilizers and thorough watering with a chunky aroid mix. Learned a lot about watering moss poles watching this! One question, are you concerned at all about plastics leeching from the bottles into the water? Or is this something the plants aren't bothered by? Thanks!

Being he's using food grade drinking water bottles should mean there isn't anything leaching into the water. HDPE is pretty safe for that. Unless he was eating the fruit of a plant, or the plant itself, I wouldn't see there being anything to worry about even if the bottles were not food grade. They would likely soak up any leached compounds, though, yes. But for the most part it shouldn't cause any issues for the plant itseof

Do you let the entire 1L drain into each pole?
@sydneyplantguy
@sydneyplantguy Жыл бұрын
usually, yes :) but again, it depends on the size of the pole & plant & how dry it is

Thank you so much for this video! I've watered my Monstera Deliciosa on a moss pole by the same method (watering the moss pole). I use about 1L of water and the bottom leaves going up the stem have yellowed and died. I wait until the moss pole is dry before I water and don't water the soil. Am I watering too much? Thanks for your time!
@sydneyplantguy
@sydneyplantguy Жыл бұрын
Try less water but maybe more often so the pole stays moist but never wet :)

how do you drilll the holes in the caps of your water bottles? safely - top side down or up? what size drill bit? I tired and made them too big and the little bugger kept slipping out of the way
@sydneyplantguy
@sydneyplantguy Жыл бұрын
I keep the lid kn the bottle when I drill the holes. I’ve used different size drill bits and they all seem to work, i don’t think you can really go wrong with holes that are around 3-5mms diameter

Is there a reason why you only have so few moss poles with a plastic back? I'm about to make some but I was wondering why you didn't had more. Thanks! :) Edit: still can't believe I watched two hours of you watering your plants. 😂 Love your content, great videos as always!! Cheers from Canada. 👋

What did you mean when you said you use Foliage Focuse "weekly, weekly" Is that every week or once every 2 weeks? Big fan my man, made my first moss pole this week with exactly what you suggest from Bunnings, keep up the wonderful work!

@@sydneyplantguy Thanks for the response! I'm currently feeding my Albo 2ml of Foliage Focus and 2ml or Clonex Clone Solution (per litre) to help roots. The plant is mature now with 5 big leaves, so should I switch to only FF or stick to a mix of both FF and CCS? 🙏

Are you using only a lower concentration of fertiliser? 5ml instead of 10? I know you adjust for summer and winter but do you ever use 10ml concentration?
