I was on my way up into the mountains of Montana for an Offroad trip with fellow youtuber "Montana mountain UTV, when all of a sudden, I felt and heard a giant "CLUNK". After stopping, I jumped out of the truck and saw what was the beginning of a week long endeavor involving one amazing Sheriff, a tow truck, the unbeknownst to me skills of my fellow youtuber friend Will, and my mechanic friend who took time out of his busy schedule to help me finish the puzzle I found myself in.
During this whole debacle, I still found time to explore one of Montana's toughest Offroad trails in my can am 6x6.

Wow, I guess we all learned that there are some really nice folks in Montana. I’m so pleased to hear that, since that’s what I found when we were stationed there from 1968 until 1972. I’m glad some really good things don’t change. Thanks for the ride!

It really depends on what part of Montana you’re in. “Fake” Montana such as Missoula or bozeman, with the infiltration of out of staters who come from big cities, are tainting the Montana culture. At least the ones that have no intention of assimilation.

Wow, what an incredible situation and video, and it appears the universe sent you what you truly needed. I don't think you could've broke down in a more scenic and majestic area, and your riding buddy happened to be a mechanic, too, that's great karma. Zeda seemed happy with the situation! I'll be happy living vicariously through your rocking riding climbs, don't think I'd even attempt to do that, but it was a beautiful climb. As always, waiting for your next video, stay safe and hopefully no more breakdowns!

you've probably figured this out by now, but you can install those stable loads from the other side and that'll give you more clearance for the tire. you'll flip then in from the inside vs the outside. It's a little harder to use but it gives a lot more clearance. Torklift has a guide/instructions for this install as well. There are lots of high capacity lug centric wheels, you just have to make sure you're using appropriately flared lug nuts not flat ended ones and keep them torqued properly.

Yep, rim was totally destroyed. The holes where the studs go through we’re bored out to almost twice their size. Have you had any issues with wheel studs breaking? Because that was a precursor to this event. My mechanic told me I shouldn’t run lug centric wheels on my rig when I have this much weight even though method boasts 4500 lbs per wheel rating. I was at maybe 3700.
@KennyOfAllTrades
@KennyOfAllTrades Жыл бұрын
@@downbytheriver501 I have not had any issues with the lug's backing off. I just checked them this morning when I left my campsite. We were about 30 miles South of the Canadian border. Everything was tight. I have not had a lug loosen up on me, and I have not had any wheel studs break. I was running wheel spacers on my original steel wheels before the method rims.They were not hub centric.I've not had any issues, knock on wood. I could definitely see how the hub Centric wheel would support the weight better than a non hub centric. I probably have 40000 miles on these rims. I do rotate and balance every 8000 miles. I will keep a closer eye on them. I bought the Tires and wheels at discount tire. They told me it was very important with these rims to re-torque the lug nuts 75 miles after every rotate balance

WOW I have been into off-road and towing trucks for over 30 years and never heard of lug-centric vs. hub-centric wheels. I definitely have lug centric wheels on my Ram and will be looking into this. I did find information for "hub-centric rings" that will adapt your custom wheels to your axle hub. probably going to invest in these after I do some more research. I plan on hitting Magruder and Lolo Motor Way next summer with the Northern Lite on the Ram.

It’s pretty new territory for me too! Unfortunately I had to learn of this through these circumstances. Although admittedly, I can’t draw any conclusions for the actual failure for this setup. Method was kind enough to resupply me with a new wheel and cover the costs for the installation…which is commendable for them to do so.

Hey, first off, love your content! You pretty much have the setup I’m looking at. Already have the same RAM, but a 2020, and have been looking at the NL 9-6LE, which is how I came across your channel. I also was intending on the same Method wheels after research till I saw this latest video. So in searching, I’ve come across a wheel made by ICON called the Compression HD. While it’s only 4000 lbs per wheel vs Method’s 4500 lbs, it IS hubcentric, so I figure that’s a decent trade off. Might be worth a look.

This video has opened a can of worms for me. I never knew there would be such a huge debate with online forums regarding the difference between hub and lug Centric wheels. After watching this video I was second guessing whether Method Rims were my best choice. I have read through multiple threads trying to figure out if the lateral force now being carried by the lug nuts would be an issue. Many many many thousands of people are using this rim in the off road community without issues. But I also found that hundreds of people have also experienced the same problem as you. I looked and have not found a hub centric adapter yet. Hopefully General Motors wheel studs are superior.....thats what I am going to convince myself with.

Yeah it’s apparently a real hot topic issue. My mechanic said he’s seen this happen 3 times now. One of the times I saw the actual carnage of what happens when your wheel falls off with a truck camper at highway speeds. Guy somehow managed to it crash but entire right rear was destroyed. I did contact method and they rush delivered a replacement for me which is pretty awesome, but that still only grazes the overall cost of what this situation was.

@downbytheriver501
@downbytheriver501 Жыл бұрын
@@alaska-bornfloridaman no, the load on a lug centric wheel is carried through the wheel stud. On a hub centric wheel, the load is carried into the hub, the much stronger option. I was reassured by the manufacturer of these wheels that this type of wheel is plenty strong, but I’m going to heed the advice of my mechanic, albeit a bit too late, and find an aftermarket wheel that actually is hub centric. One way to strengthen the weak spot(the wheel studs) is to get these spacers called “centric rings” which will then transfer the load back onto the hub on a lug centric rim but they don’t make them for 8 lug wheels, from what I’ve heard.
