Kyungho, I think it is very important for you to understand and sympathize with how Dianna feels about talking Korean with family, etc. I know, because I am in the same situation. It is embarrassing when someone talks to you and you can't understand them, or reply well. It is socially awkward, and not surprising that Dianna is reluctant to put herself in that position. It matters most in a situation when if you are alone with your Mother in Law without your partner.

To Richard Croy, so very true. Curve ball for you. I’m in my mid 50’s and I divorced my Korean mom. My mother-in-law and I are very close. Korean’s born in the 1940’s are very different. I’m a boomer baby. I speak fluent Korean, older Korean’s don’t say they love you or give you hugs. More so when their children are Creole, we were the unseen children. That was us. Mom is the eldest daughter of 6 children. Can’t tell you if we ever celebrated anything with our Korean family. I once had a birthday party, mom didn’t care or remember it. Our adopted uncle bought me a cake and it was (his son) my cousin and my 2 brothers, 8 yrs old and a party of 5. Dad was working as well. My mom told me I was ugly, to fat, to skinny, to stupid, to smart and I needed to stop walking with my butt sticking out, um...not possible to remove what I have naturally. I was told to never smile because I was ugly. I found my pictures as a child and none of us 3 kids smiled. Now that is sad. Korean is my first language.

@Black Pill Revolution ...Or Asian societies could just learn to be more respectful of foreigners? Haha The world is only getting more globalized and transnational. I don't see how keeping Asian peoples in a homogeneous bubble will do any good. They need to change and adapt to the new times. I commend people like Diana who are willing to move to Asian countries. That's the first step for change.

I can imagine being married to someone from a different culture and living far away from home can maybe be challenging at times. If that was me I would want someone to comfort me and be patient with me. Dianna first language is English so I can imagine how she feels when speaking. I tend to get shy around people when speaking to them in their language as well patience is the key.

I'm sad people always comment how it's difficult for the wife to adjust but can't see how the husband has fought with his family to keep his wife and always got stucked between his wife and family. Koreans men tend to value their mom more than their women. I feel like husband is really doing good job to make their relationship better, people should always see his side of effort.

I lived in Brazil for fifteen years. While I had visited the country several times before moving there, it wasn't until I moved there that learning Portuguese became a necessity. Becoming fluent in any language needs to concious effort on your part but it doesn't need to be hard or boring. I made a point to rethink some of my daily habits in Portuguese instead of English. For example, I wrote my grocery list in Portuguese (vocabulary of fruits, vegetables, cuts of meat, household products, etc.). I love to cook, so I bought cookbooks in Portuguese (learned verbs and their conjugations for cooking). I took an aerobics class (more verbs & vocabulary, more practice). I got in the habit of watching Brazilian novelas - good ear training for slang, rhythm and syntax. I joined a church, I volunteered, learned to knit, learned the lyrics to popular music, watched children's television programming, took a samba class, subscribed to magazines, joined an escola de samba for carnaval and pretty much talked to whoever would listen. I would often tell people I was learning to speak Portuguese and I needed their help to get better. Most were honored that I wanted to learn their language as opposed to insisting like most tourists do to learn theirs. I only attended one class the entire fifteen years I lived in Brazil and it didn't really help all that much. I was fluent within three years. One day, you'll just feel it happen like it was always there. You will dream in Korean. The real trick, I learned, is to not translate anything in your head - just learn it like your babies are learning. Besides, language is way more than words and not all cultural things translate. Just let it wash over you like water - accept cultural concepts as they are without seeking an equivalent in English. All humans learn first by understanding, then speaking, reading and finally writing. Classes always do it backwards - reading, writing, speaking then understanding. That's why they don't work. Be patient and not afraid to makes mistakes. That's how we learn. Start now with your children. To make them truly bilingual, they will learn by association - you will only speak English with them (i.e. they will associate the English language with you) and only Korean with their father. It will take many years but by age 5 or 6 they will be fully bilingual. It's an amazing thing to watch how their minds learn. You can learn much by watching them.

Hello Dianna. Your channel was suggested by youtube so I started watching to see what it was about. It's interesting to me as I see you are married to a Korean man and you are African American woman. I'm the son of a Korean Mother and an African American Father. I was actually born in Korea in the 1970's. Life was really quite hard in those times for mixed marriages. Most people of my Korean family disowned my Mother because of the marriage, which was extremely difficult for her. As a child going to school was difficult for me as many student called me not nice names, bullied me because of my dark skin, and looks. For my Mom and Dad it was enough so at 12 years old we move to the United States where things were a bit more open. Normally I wouldn't write comments on such personal things, but when I showed your videos to my Mom she said, she see the sadness in your eyes and the struggle you are mentally going through. She wanted me to write to you and say you are very blessed to have a beautiful connection to your husband's family and in order for you to be truly be happy living there you have to embrace that support system being offered to you. It doesn't matter if your Korean is perfect or not use it. The more mistakes you make the more you will learn and you will learn, but to have to speak it all the time. And you have to speak openly and often with your Mother in law because it's in her eyes and actions the love she has for you as part of her family. Share your worries and fears with her, she wants to help in any way she can. So, my Korean Mother's advice for you. Sending your whole family and you much blessings and grace. Steph...

Thanks for sharing such a thoughtful and detailed story about you and your family. I am sure Korea was different a few decades ago which can directly affect children of mixed heritages. We have had many people share their stories of their times living in Korea both positive and negative. Our channel focuses on our past experiences and how we challenged these situations to gain a successful outcome. Most importantly our past situations were challenging as well, however, we are glad our families are now positive, happy, and thrilling together. We will continue to share our stories to many people who also share many similar experiences and vlogging our experiences abroad. Thanks for coming through!

Ms Diana this is the long and the short of it. U need to figure out how u learn languages best and immerse yourself. Personally, I learn best by repeatedly hearing and writing. I start out by watching videos, movies, cartoons, or reading books geared towards kids. I listen to music geared towards kids also until I've a base understanding and graduate to songs or movies that I like that aren't for kids. U can do writing exercises or flashcards. Some ppl learn better by learning the general rules of the language first and breaking down parts of speech first. It's essential for you to learn the language if you're going to live there. Even if you were to move stateside u should learn it so u can have a deeper bond with his family and communicate with your kids in Korean. Consider this, anything could happen to u, your hubby or his family and if u need to contact emergency services u need to be able to communicate clearly so help can arrive as soon as possible. The dispatcher may need to give you instructions to minimize risks. that could literally be the difference between life and death. U will make mistakes and u may be teased and corrected, but u will only get better if u try. This is so extremely important and ur in-laws are showing you love by expressing they want a deeper relationship with you. Be brave. I believe in you 💯!

You both decided to begin a interracial relationship so, at this point where you are married and already have children it is important that you learn each others language. He already knows English so now she should learn Korean. Moreover, you are both living in Korea. She can take korean language classes; being emerged in the language, it’ll be easier to practice. There should be an authentic desire to learn. Look into the youtuber Megan Bowen, she recently married her Korean boyfriend. Megan took korean language classes and has been in Korea around 5 years now ( if I’m not mistaken) she can now speak Korean very well. She lives in Korea and can be a good contact source. It’s now not just a couple matter, but a family one. A second language in s not easy but, it’s not impossible. Go for it girl!!! You can do it!

Despite the language barrier, your in laws are making an effort to be apart of your family. They may not be able to communicate with you verbally but instead convey their affection through their deeds such as spending time together, preparing meals and cuddling their grandkids. I believe because your mother in law cherishes her son and respects him as a person, she does not want to disappoint him. I understand that it can feel a bit uncomfortable at times but a genuine smile and courtesy puts people at ease and makes you more receptive. I know your Korean will improve over time. Be thankful that your extended family are trying their best to be apart of your lives and accepted you as their daughter in law. By the way, i enjoyed your excursion to the old korean village. It's important to remember your roots, traditions and customs because it forms your identity, bonds a people, helps create understanding, and to honor those who came before you. I am so impressed by how Koreas have persevered as a nation and people. They have overcome so many obstacles in history because they have stood against major forces such as the Chinese and Japanese. I am also proud to be part African because my ancesters endured and triumphed over oppression, inequality and racism for me to exist. I am reaping the benefits of those made saceifices for me. I am making them proud because i am living a good life though not perfect and have so many opportunities that they didnt have. In my heart, i hope that people in the past found happiness regardless of their predicaments as i have found myself this present day of age. I find no time to be miserable and unhappy because each day is a gift from God. I almost met my maker years ago and probably on many other occasions as well so i learned that i am not invincible or immortal fast. People wonder why I smile all the time. I consider life as a miracle. Life can be h...ll too but one has to be determined to make it a heaven on earth. Pat yourself on the shoulder upon obtaining your victory whether it be small or large. Dream for better days when you gad a bad day. I also find that encouraging others so rewarding. Lasting I give all thanks to God ultimately followed by family and friends.

Haha We’ve been through this/are still going through this! Although my husband never got aggravated about it at a restaurant lol. He maybe understands my nervousness too well.~ My in-laws are from the countryside, real farming people. So they speak with thick accents, and I learn Seoul pronunciation by myself! Mother-in-law is very patient with me, but it can be difficult communicating with father-in-law (we can feel each other’s frustration at times). Things will improve slowly, and it’s important to spend more and more time together to build that relationship, especially with mother-in-law!!! Good luck on your Korean-learning journey!!!! Fighting!

You have beautiful children and you & your hubby are lovely. You are so brave and adventurous moving to a country so culturally different & embracing everything the way you do. I enjoy watching your experiences. I too moved with my British hubby to the United Kingdom-even without a language barrier, the cultural differences are profound. So I understand to a degree how you’re feeling. When I first moved, I was missing my friends a lot, before I established new friendships here. Do you have many Korean girlfriends you can go out with & have “girl time”? P.S. Maybe you could agree with your friends and husband to alternate & speak English one day & Korean only the next. That’s what I did when I lived in France. I also had days where I spoke English & my ex-bf replied only in French. It’s really helpful when learning a new language, I think. 😀

As I support and love these two beautiful couple I want that Dianna should realised how he's trying hard to make a good bounding between his mother and wife. I'm sad people always comment how it's difficult for the wife to adjust but can't see how much husband went through, he kept on fighting for his love and finally convinced his parents to accept Dianna, I'm sure the husband got stucked between his wife and family. Korean men tend to value their mom more than their women, I feel like husband is really doing good job to make their relationship better, no doubt on Dianna's effort but people should see husband's side of effort too.

Wow! Diana, I have to say you’re very very patient and mature. I think being in that situation where you’re outside in public and people are constantly staring at you can make you feel like you’re under a lot of pressure, so I’m really amazed that you didn’t lose your temper . I’m not sure if I’m understanding the whole situation because it seems as if some of what Diana said was edited out. If not, then I think the beginning was just a misunderstanding because Diana said at first it would be good and she could practice Korean with the mother-in-law, but then it seemed like her husband had a lot on his mind ( maybe his mother in law said something before about not seeing them both enough to make him feel equally pressured, or maybe he felt bad because he had already agreed to them going out...?) either way, I think because of the language barrier and pressure , this was kind of a tense discussion. I think being in a foreign country and learning a language that’s the opposite of English can be extremely difficult especially for someone shy and introverted like Dianna ( my apologies if I’m making assumptions). I’m really amazed that she went home and wasn’t angry about the pressure put on her at the restaurant and that she did push herself to go out that weekend with her mother-in-law. That discussion in the restaurant could’ve easily escalated, so I’m proud of Diana. Also, on the other hand her husband did go to America and try to learn English as hard as it was even making mistakes along the way. I think it could feel really tiring to have to speak in English all the time. Sometimes when I speak Japanese at a certain point in time I just get tired emotionally from not being able to express myself and just switch into English. I think it’s really kind of her husband and patient of him to always speak in English to her. I think You guys compliment each other well! Try not to put too much pressure on each other . But you’re both a lovely couple! Diana the more positive experiences you have learning a different language the more you’ll speak and the more fluent you’ll become! I’m also living in a foreign country and trying to learn a completely different language from my own!
