As someone else said, Babymetal are an idol group, and you have to be EXTREMLY fit to be an idol, as they all sing and dance like this for entire shows

So you really need some context!! LoL!! Imagine if you will.... The year is 2010 and a Japanese Idol group based around School Life with various Clubs....and one of them is the Heavy Music Club. Heavy Music and Jpop vocals...wasn't expected to go very far but a fan base started to emerge over time. Three years on and they were so popular that the powers that be decided to separate the group to become its own thing. December 21, 2013, The Legend 1997 Show (1997 is the year the lead singer, Suzuka, was born and its the day after her 16th Birthday)..the concert starts with over the top Idol/Jpop styles with the girls singing to a backing track...progressed to the "Fake" Band of Babybones(the ones in this video- they could not always afford a live band so they had actors in skeleton costumes pretend to play)...but the music gets heavier and Heavier as they bring in a real Live Band, the "Kami Band" as the show progresses...until the Finale where Suzuka gives up her existence as a Pop Princess to be reborn as a Metal Goddess!! So you caught the middle of that transformation...and its the song that went Viral because of the extremely high "W T F" factor!! And yes, they have songs that will leave your Metal Mind in a state of Utter Adulation as well as some that will just make you smile, cry, scratch your head because you have no idea what just happened. Babymetal is Japan's #1 International Band. (not just Metal..All Genres) Oh, and their last Album, Metal Galaxy, hit #1 in the USA on Billboard's "Top Rock Album" chart back in 2019. I discovered this band years ago. My face was like that for about an hour..... All the record companies thought it was the worst idea anyone had ever had, and the fact that they managed to execute this insanity so well is a miracle.

I remember when I discover Babymetal: I saw Gimme Choco, Karate videos and inmediately ordered their first 2 albums. The day the CDs arrived, I was comming back from work hearing the first CD in my car with every song blowing my mind, close to home I heard ''Onedari Daisakusen" and my jaw fell and I drove with my open mouth for 3 minutes. I was hearing the song even in my dreams. I had the CDs on repeat for almost daily for two years. I travelled to another country to see them live, one of the best experiences of my life.

At the time this concert video was posted (2017), lead singer was 16 and the two younger girls were 14. However, they'd all been performing in Japan Idol schools since they were around 7 or 8, so they were highly seasoned by the time they made Gimme Chocolate.

This video going viral is what probably introduced a lot of (non-japanese) people to Babymetal. They are a fusion of j-pop and metal which they call Kawaii metal (cute metal). Babymetal (the three girls Su-metal, Vocals/Dance and Moa-Metal and Yui-Metal, Scream/Dance, think cheerleaders) was formed in 2010. This video was shot the day after Su turned 16. Moa and Yui are 14 in this video. They have 50+ songs and are currently releasing songs from their 4th album, Thay have toured the world and have had sellout crowds of 55K people (Tokyo Dome). their music style varies. Some songs may be very poppy, some are a lot harder. there are power metal songs, beautiful ballads. One song sounds like an Irish Jig, one like it could be in a Bollywood movie. The group remained the same until 2018 when Yui officially left the group citing health issues and was replace buy a permormer known as an "Avenger" the Avenger just dances and has no mic. The "band" in this video was just pretending to play the instruments, though they are often backed by a band known as the "Kami Band" wgich is a group of some of the best performers in Japan. Depending ob your tastes, I'd recomend Road of Resistance (Live in Japan, Rondo of Nighmare with the mischiefs of mayhem intro (Kami band intro) or Metal Kindom (official) a song that was first performed live this year at their Jan 28th show.

I was gobsmacked like you because I heard this song firstly too , - I'm 55 and have seen everyone live in 40 years of going to concerts and Babymetal are undeniably superb - I've seen them twice here in London and will see them next month at Wembley supporting Sabaton. They are in their mid twenties now. The band is called the Kami Band and are some of the most talented musicians on the planet. It's not just a concert, it's an experience (a little like Nightwish gigs) and a lot of metal snobs criticise them because they are blinkered and not open to a new type of metal genre/fusions - they are close minded. My Wife also was a little concerned, 😆 I must admit - but there is no and never has been anything sexual about their performances. I love Lovebites who are of course superb musicians but if you stick with Babymetal, you'll here songs paying homage to Indian music , Latino music, Rap music, even Sea Shanty style - all with a chunky backing which I know you like so much. I do hope you give them another shot as I don't think this is the right song to hear first - the shock value puts reactors off unfortunately and they never cover Babymetal again. I think this is my first comment since I subscribed - keep em coming, especially Nightwish, Babymetal, Lovebites and many more I could recommend, but I'll shut up for now. Take care of yourself 😃

Back in my immature teen head banging days I would of said this BabyMetal is just another PopMusic market infiltrating the Metal scene ....As an Adult many decades removed from those years , I say, the band is legit and deserves mass appreciation and credit, the young girls are terrific and entertaining ... this whole concept is awesome and I don't care if it is some marketing ploy or what , more power to them and none of my concern ...I just appreciate music of all kinds levels and all periods now

"Is this how all their songs are?" No. The songwriting is very varied. They do almost everything as long as it is metal. And they mix other genres with metal. They use rough vocals sparingly. BABYMETAL is arguably the best live band from 2012 until today. That excludes the first two years of their existence. They started 2010. During their very first live performance the girls were 11, 11 and 12 years old.

You probably picked the song with the biggest WTF factor but congratulations, you can now move onto their more amazing songs. As a newby to BM, I suggest dipping your toe into it a little more with one of the following songs. Choose Headbangerrrr! (Legend 1997 version), 1997 refers to the birth year of the lead singer and this was g=from her 16th birthday show; Megitsune, a crowd favourite; or Karate. Once you have seen any of those, I strongly suggest watching Road of Resistance - Live in Japan, which truly encapsulates the talents of the girls and the backing band, as well as show how amazing their crowd control is. You will not believe it when you see it. I love Babymetal, they kept me sane during the Melbourne lockdowns in 2020 and gave me a smile everyday. They are the epitome of Happy Metal. Kitsune up!

It was the first Babymetal song I saw as well, back in 2018...and I have not gone a day without listening since. I am 60 now and heard it all, this band brings me such joy to watch and listen too. I remember the first time I heard Baby Metal I was so confused after, listening to more and more their songs I realized just how great a band they are. Get into some more of their songs I think they will grow on you.

Not the song I would have recommended you start with, but I’m glad you’re here. If you want to see them go epic, try Road of Resistance, live in Japan. To see how hard they can go, it’s Sis. Anger. For a look how talented the Kami Band is, Rondo of Nightmare with Mischiefs of God intro.

Their genre is "kawaii metal" which translates to "cute metal." Sooooo, there you go :D They do have a variety of tempo with their songs as well as some girl-power ballads in there. And Su-metal has REALLY matured into an adult singing voice (I believe she's 23 now.) I believe this particular tour was in 2014, and Su would have been 18, while Yui and Moa would have been 16 or turning sixteen (I saw them in France that year, Su let Moa take over her solo). They were super tiny children when they started out. Like, freaking eleven. But they weren't doing tours then, they were strictly on Japanese television (Sakura Gakuin, "Cherry Blossom School")

Welcome! They have an amazing catalog, there are paths through it that may be more appealing to you, but there are no wrong steps. Gimme Chocolate has never been my favourite Babymetal song, they have so many incredible songs it's easy for it to get lost in the crowd. But it's growing on me, really like the choreography and that mix of fuck-yeah heaviness and sweet-as vocals with more filthy guitar/drums. And the look on every reactors face is classic 😎

Some context, this concert was in 2013, for Su's 16th birthday, lasted an hour and a half, almost non stopping, even the backing band, call Kami Band, only played a half of the concert. That's how these girls are so professional at that young age, and giving credits to any one involved behind them.

This was a "show" band (not real), they do have a fantastic backing band (Kami Band) that changes out but keeps a main group. On their own the Kami Band is a killer metal band, the girls started in the idol academies and were put together by their producer. A unique concept and sound that has been going on for a while now. They have several great concert live videos - Road of Resistance for one.

I've been to 2 BABYMETAL shows in Oslo, Norway. And I will see them a 3rd time in November. Don't worry. They are all adults now in 2023. The lead vocalist is 25 years old. But at the time of this recording she was 16 or 17.

Their earliest performances were with a prerecorded backing track with performers miming playing onstage. This song was with the fake band; this concert introduced the live band in the second half of the show and they have never looked back. The live band--the "Kami Band"--comprises the hottest session players in Japan.

Man Baby metal is a deep rabbit hole, but man do they rock unbelievable hard.

They were about 14 or so for this song, today they are a duo and 23 and 25 years old(lead singer). Watch all the old live videos especially because they are insane with performance and the songs fit the age. This song was about teen girls being pressured about weight, diets and all they want is chocolate. The band is now the Kami Band(not really this skeleton band) and they are insanely good, the Kami Band are usually dressed more like ghosts, not skeletons. Babymetal dropped a new album only 4 days ago, so check it out. Other older songs, like road of resistance and headbanger live are great and the baby metal death all from the 1997 live(1997 refers to the birthday of the lead singer). For some collabs, they did kingslayer with bring me the horizon and if you want to see the Kami Band and Babymetal sing Judas priest painkiller and breaking the law, live with Rob Halford, look that up.

I’m a 70 year old metal head. With three daughters all grown now. It took a while for BABYMETAL to grow on me. But now I’m a big fan. You just have to get past the Japanese weirdness and enjoy the music. Great reaction more please.

Another Japanese band you might want to check out is Shonen Knife. They are a all girl group...drummer, guitarist and bassist. They are kinda a fusion of punk, j-pop and rock. The Ramones are one of their musical inspirations. Their music is kinda quirky, but they also have put out a tribute album to the Ramones.

Fun fact: The girls didn't know Metal when they were casted for the group. They just embraced it as a high energy type of music. They can be considered as a "gateway" kind of group to make a bit more "palatable" for people who is not used to heavy singing and growls, since they have more melodic singing. They have been featured in "The First Take" showcasing an acoustic version of their more recent songs and you can hear their vocal prowess. This group was an attempt at mixing the "Idol" culture (to a degree) with Metal music and aesthetic. A follow-up to this group from a different producer was "Lady Baby" featuring also 2 girls and one single White Metal singer, cross dressing and wrestler named "Lady Beard" (which was eventually kicked out of that group and recently started his own unit called "Baby Beard"), also worth checking out.

That's exactly how Babymetal started this new wave of Japanese rock/metal for the west. The music is great and the girls are actually talented, well, their are young women now. They've been doing this for over 10 years ! First reactions are always fun, after that we can go any other direction. Because Babymetal has a very diverse discography It takes about 3 videos/reactions to fully wrap your brain around what they are and what they do and if you like them.

Their first video was Doki Doki Morning...they were 10, 10, & 12 yrs old...babies! My favorite song is Papaya ft F. Hero, which is much more recent.
