Hi Mark, I just wanted to share my little story with you, such as it is. 41 year old male. 2nd of January 2021, I had let my weight slip up to 17 stone (I'm 6'1") so I decided I'd start back in the gym. 15th of January 2021, on my way to work on a freezing morning, went to turn my steering wheel at a bend I had navigated 100's of times before - nothing happens. Car keeps going forwards and slams headlong into a Mini coming the opposite way. Fractured my spine (L5 burst fracture), internal bleeding on the stomach and bowels and a nasty concussion. Spend a couple of weeks in hospital and several months in recovery afterwards. My weight crashed to 11 stone due to my stomach issues before it finally stabilised. By this point though I had started to eat like crazy to try and combat the loss. May 2022. My weight ballooned once again to just over 17 stone so I decided to try and get back into some fitness. I was scared as heck up to this point to do it as I thought my back would simply give out and I'd find I just couldn't cut it anymore. I was pleasantly surprised though to find that not only was that not the case, but the gym was just what I needed. I took it easy at first. I almost exclusively used the cross trainer as it seemed to be lower impact. The weight started to come off again and my back was strengthened better than I could have ever hoped. About a month later I stepped onto a treadmill for the first time. Didn't really know what to expect but I just started going. Did the set programs the treadmill offered. Mostly HIIT stuff. My goal was to see if I could get anywhere near 30 minutes for my 5K. First time I tried it I failed miserably after less than 10 minutes. Kept grafting though. The second time I tried it I hit the 30 minutes. Now as of August 2022 I've lost exactly 3 stone and I just got a 27:47 which for me a few months ago seemed close to impossible. I feel great. In fact this is the best I've felt in years, even before the accident. This channel has really really helped in terms of motivation. Your down to earth 'better than average' motto is something I have taken as my own and keeps me driven, and I can't thank you enough for that. My goal now is getting to sub 25 minutes for my 5K, then after that who knows, I may focus more on resistance training. Once again thank you.

I get so many of these incredible stories. Inspiring. Makes my “I was just fat” sob story look pretty lame 😂. Your park run time is already fast than the average person could do it. Just go to any city centre and look at Joe bloggs……..he isn’t even going to a run, let alone going sub 30

When I was not overweight with a reletively good physique in my 20s I tried running and was left breathless and gave up whilst the obese people I was running with weren't out of breath and ran the distance. I learnt a lesson that fatness or lack of doesn't equate to fitness and not to judge a book.

Really enjoyed that video and suited my nefarious purposes perfectly!! I'd mentioned this channel to my wife a few times and we watched the Hyrox simulation one together (no particular reason, I just stuck it on and she found it interesting). Watched this video together and it put a few things into excellent perspective. I've been training a lot over the last couple of years and with our youngest children about to move into full education she'll have a lot more time on her hands. Been a tough few years of looking after 3 young children and she needs to drop quite a few pounds as well as becoming more active, getting more energy and improving cardiovascular health. She's sort of open to it but has a few mental barriers, all of which you addressed in this video (starting point, initial gains, rate of progress, etc..). There were also some great moment where I could have said "See, see, that applies to you as well!". But I didn't, not that stupid. Best one was probably when Jenna said that despite doing this training she has more energy, that's a point I've wanted to make when she's slumped on the sofa in the evening but haven't dared to! The other key moments were about pushing through when it feels tough and finding things you enjoy together. So hopefully this will pay off for both of us over the coming years and months. Tempted to start my own Wife Improvement channel but there's a very real possibility that any investment in cameras, editing software and teleprompters will be a complete waste of money!

@@mrwilliams5006 being able to run non-stop for 5K is great. 13K certainly is! Keep doing that, and your times will drop fast! small tip, that took me a few months to realise, do NOT do hard runs every time you go for a run. Buying a watch and going for PBs all the time is a very easy trap to fall into. I did research on it, read a few articles, and the advice is "more miles, run at an easy pace, is the way to go."

You hit the nail on the head with the comment re’ competing with yourself in this film. I’m the only person I compete with, I’m my own biggest critic but despite being far heavier and far slower than I’d like to be I am seeing improvement every day. I’m a former Paratrooper and I’ve always been competitive and certainly “a smidge +above average “ but I’m also a realist, I’m now 57 but have a resting heart rate of 46-48 and training is going well. Mate, I just got to say that I am really enjoying the channel. I found you when I was researching a Kickr Bike to upgrade from my Kickr Core as I was retiring the bike for good. I’ve since watched a load of your videos. You and your journey are an inspiration to me! I’ve been a similar path since November last year. I bought the Kickr and starting Zwifting through the winter. I’ve lost weight, toned up and gained power. I bought a Garmin watch and now suddenly I care about how many steps I do and I actually go for walks! Without being dramatic, it’s changed my life. I’m a loooooong way behind you and will still probably never run or go to a gym, but I love riding my bike indoors and outside and collecting those load points. I love the humour and the 80’s action movie scenes! I’ve now also started using your secret weapon… The Rocky Soundtrack! I used it today and won a sprint on Zwift! Coincidence? I don’t think so. Thanks, Mark. Keep the content coming.

Ps I worked in an office environment for over 40 years and only took up exercise 6 years ago then i joined our local coastal rowing club and decided to join a gym to build up stamina and strength. Beautiful couple, mainly because they are striving to be better together. Also, no crazy changes but realistic so that women don't get dissapointed and give up. It's all about the process and consistency. Awesome.

It is so refreshing to see someone say how fitness is not how you look! I am a transplant recipient and thus have a HUGE scar and several herniated gaps in that scar - I am a strange shape and will never have a six pack! All the motivation in the world struggle a bit when the medication means I can hardily stand up some days, yet most fitness folk on here are merrily pretend they take less meds than I do (and mine keep me alive, not cut down on the work I need to do) I am also a transplant field athlete , throwing shot, discus and javelin - hence I train stupidly hard and confuse doctors with my high BMI and 56 inch chest. "Normal" people being above average is great for me to see and aspire towards so thank you for the message!
