Never understood why this movie didn't do better at the box office. Easily one of my favorite superhero movies of all time, and the best literal translation from page to screen of any movie ever. It literally feels like a comic come to life onscreen. One additional touch I loved is how Zack Snyder went out of his way to give each of the characters a unique fighting style of their own, from Owlman's sweeping attacks and Silk Specter's straight ahead lunges to Rorschach's almost berserker like wild melee, he made each style fit their character.

It's lack of name recognition, good promotion, long run-time, adult themes and many other things, I'm sure. people in mass go to action films, about 90 minutes, and are more likely to go see a sequel or a well-known franchise, usually go with families/friends and will avoid movies rated R to be inclusive of younger people in the group or to avoid "uncomfortable" topics.

Well it was before the superhero movie boom. So a large part of the satire didn’t work for a general audience. So it’s just a bunch of bad superheroes. I get why that wouldn’t appeal to people. Throw in the fans that don’t think this is a good representation of the comic and you have a formula for a movie not faking off.

The biggest thing that I think is lacking from the film adaptation is the limited presence of Rorschach’s psychiatrist. The emotional and intellectual journey he takes during the graphic novel grounds the story in a realistic feeling of helplessness of the everyday person during large scale global conflicts like the Cold War (with or without superheroes). He may be the only truly sane character in the whole story. Without his presence, something thematically is definitely lost.

“Care about the story” Where? The movie only cared about the visuals of the book but not the meaning of the themes, characters, and story. The movie made an incel character from the book into a heroic figure and made watchmen heroes seem superhuman every time they fight someone when it isn’t like that in the book. The book they are supposed to be regular people.
@hous2tim964

@@americasteam2112 Why you want the movie to be just like the book. Frankly it's nonsense, the fact of wanting it to be exactly like in the book. A lot of people haven't read the books and just want a decent movie whose story they understand. Regarding the fact that they apparently have superhuman strength, they are superheroes and it's a fantasy world. Manhattan alone is a mind-blowing character. If you like the book so much, well, stick with the book and just imagine how it could be. The guy made his film, you don't like it, too bad for you. Many others liked this movie.

The characters in the Watchman movie and Book are based on the 70s Charlton comics characters, which were acquired by DC comics in the early 80s. Writer Allen Moore wanted to tell the story with the Charlton characters, but DC management told him no, so he made copycat Characters based on them. Rorschach is based on The Question, The Comedian is based on Peacemaker (who was played by John Cena in the Suicide Squad and had his own HBO show.) Nite Owl 1 is based on Blue Beatle 1 Dan Garrett, who was just a guy in a costume punching people. Nite Owl 2 is based on the 2nd Blue Beatle Ted Kord, along with all his gadgets and his ship. Both the 1st two Blue Beatles are referenced in the trailer for the newest Blue Beatle, Jaime Reyes's movie. In the shot where you see them saying the older gadgets at Kord industries are like Batman, you can see The Blue Beatle 1 and 2 costumes in the background. And last, Dr. Manhattan is based on Captain Atom.

I really enjoyed the Watchmen series, which was made as a follow-up to the original comic, not the movie. It's premised on the inter-dimensional squid attack, and shows how Ozymandius perpetuated the charade. Watchmen was originally published in the 80s, amid the zeitgeist of the Cold War. In a similar way, the TV series focuses on the current zeitgeist, touching on racism, disinformation, domestic terrorism and police brutality. On how easy it was for them to guess the password--that was the whole point. Everything in the movie happens according to Ozymandius' plan, on his schedule. He wants them to find the video, so he deliberately made the password easy to guess.

While I'm sure the "looks silly" issue was part of the decision to remove the squid, one important point is that the squid requires a lot of screentime to explain; with the mystery of the kidnapped artists and scientists, and it also requires the existence of actual psychics in the human population, rather than Manhattan himself being the only "magic" element in the world.

Your point at the end about how eventually the world will "forget" about Dr. Manhattan's "attack" is something the HBO series actually addresses! (Obviously about the squid/alien rather than Manhattan)
@flatebo1
@flatebo1 11 ай бұрын
However, the world wouldn't need to get tired of waiting for another squid alien attack. Governments would have one heck of an incentive to learn as much as possible about the monster. And it wouldn't take them long to figure out that it was bio-engineered on Earth. There would realistically be no way for Veidt to create a completely original life from with a completely alien biochemistry, complete with a multi-billion year faked evolutionary history. Veidt needed the alien to live long enough to send out its psychic attack. So he needed an actual living being. Which means he'd have to go with what we know works, and that's Terrestrial biochemistry. Which in turn means that anyone analyzing the remains of the squid monster would rapidly realize that it's not actually an alien. And at that point Veidt's plan falls apart with the world's governments blaming an American and probably by extension the American government, for everything, even without Rorschach having kneecapped Veidt's grand plan by giving his journal to a newspaper. With the movie's version of the ending, I'd think people might get a bit suspicious about who actually did the deed once Veidt starts introducing so many wonderful new technologies based on replicating Dr. Manhattan's powers. It's not like Veidt was ever very shy about letting the world know he has a messiah complex.

The guy is truly a genius. And man... did he ever have something to say with this piece! AND THE CAST! Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Louis Gossett Jr... but MY GOD... Tim Blake Nelson, Jean Smart, and REGINA KING... EFFING PHENOMENAL!! It'd be cool if you guys took this on... that's what I was thinking as I started typing about the series... but NOW what I'm thinking is, "I think I need a re-watch!"

I love the scene that shows Dr Manhattan’s back story. The switching back and forth between past and present, the prose, and Phillip Glass’ music going wild. So good.

The HBO Watchmen show is incredible and a worthy follow up to the comic. I love this movie, but I’d rather watch the entire sequel miniseries over it any day of the week. Would be into seeing you folks react to it. Only 9 episodes.

This comic is just incredible. The small story embedded in the comic, you can find it animated on youtube by the name of Tales of the black freighter. I think it features Gerard Butler. Anyway great reaction as always. Edit: Speaking of DC, I don't now what the intension was with this one but, a new comic came out (somewhat recent) featuring a crossover between DC and Watchmen characters, it's called Doomsday Clock.
@AleksPizana
@AleksPizana 11 ай бұрын
That part it's on the 3.35hrs movie version which includes all the deleted scenes, along with the Black Freighter comic animated comic book. Doomsday Clock is a continuation to this story, written by Geoff Johns (Infinite Crisis, Blackest Night, Flashpoint, New 52, Rebirth... etc) . It was meant to incorporate the Watchmen to the DC main universe.

In the opening montage of events. There’s a scene with a rich couple walking out of a theater as the hero punches a criminal in the face. Behind the hero is a poster of Batman. This is supposed to say that this was the night Bruce’s parents died but the hero stopped the killer

Because the script itself is written by David hayter, the movie supposed to have him as rosharch but the project failed because director and producer thought its too dark and unfilmable. Not until David hayter watch 300 and approach snyder to direct this movie. Snyder Who also fans of alan moore said David hayter is far from rosharch in term of looks so he pick Jackie earle haley as rosharch

The changed ending gives better motivation for Dr Manhattan to leave, and avoids creating the effects for the psychic octopus. The Outer Limits episode being in the movie is directly from the comic, and it is there because fans pointed out that an Outer Limits episode (Architects of Fear) has a similar plot.

You are 100% correct this is the most perfect comic to screen we have ever seen it really is just from the pages of the novel. That’s why Snyder still try’s to get Alan more to watch it😂

In the comic, Rorschach's mask is made from a unique fabric with trapped fluid that can change shape based on heat and pressure. It swirls but never mixes - it always stays black and white which is why Rorschach likes it so much. The person who ordered the fabric didn't like it and Rorschach, who worked in the factory that made it, was allowed to take it home where he learned to cut it while keep it sealed by using heated needles, scissors, knives.

I used to pick up about 20 comics per month back in the 80s. Not even sure why I added 'Watchmen' but after issue #1 I was hooked. And the series changed the comic-book world. Remember seeing DC columns afterwards hinting that movie studios were interested and that Sigourney Weaver was rumoured (Silk Spectre I imagine). Then it became known as the 'unfilmable' movie. Zac did about the best job anybody could have done with this movie and even some of his changes were understandable. Obviously all his money went on FX as the cast was mostly unknown B-list actors (including Negan back then). I had to leave work to see the first screening of this movie at 11am. Left a post-it note on my computer screen written in light blue hi-lighter. 'Gone to see the Doctor'.
