Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle, except held items
3. No glitches, exploits, save states, or RNG manipulation
4. No evasion moves before level 100
Rule details:
-- I am allowed to manipulate my starter
-- I play the game at 4x game speed
-- For fair comparisons all my Pokemon have perfect (or near perfect) DVs / IVs
-- I am allowed to catch HM users - I can use all field moves
-- All in-battle glitches are allowed in generation 1
-- In generation 1, I'm allowed to skip Marowak with the Poke Doll
-- Surge's trash-can-puzzle is automatically solved
-- The bike is allowed in gen1, banned in gen2, and allowed for bypassing terrain in gen3
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
-- I can pause the game and timer to take breaks
-- The footage is sped up / slowed down to match the pace of my narration
-- The ability Pickup can only be used if the starter has it
-- In gen2 I must defeat Sudowoodo and Gyarados and catch Snorlax
-- In gen2 I will only use Hidden Power during my optimized playthrough

Pinned. Thank you Tyler for giving me the Wrap idea during the stream. Seriously one of the most awesome strategies! I hope that there will be a chance to use it in the future too. I filmed this back in December so I lost the chat log by the time I recorded the voice over and forgot who told me about the strat. I'm working to find a way to record the chat into the video so this doesn't happen in the future btw!

@@tyler5271 no. Honestly not. Never done that in my entire life. Someone liked it 2 minutes ago, wouldn’t shock me if it was you, just to write that comeback. But it was all just a joke bro, relax. Just find it a bit attention seeking, when Scott is working so hard making all these amazing videos, and you’d want him to make note of everyone giving him a helpful tip, and to then edit them in to this. But, as I said, just a joke. Considered throwing on an emoji of some kind, couldn’t be bothered. I’ll do it now😂

The knowledge of the jank and game mechanics without the brutal over-efficiency of a Speedrun makes a run that really does grapple with the complex intended and unintended mechanics of Yellow. Regarding the random shiny tangent when getting rest: Before Scarlet and Violet, I'd only ever found 2 shinies, not including guaranteed ones like Red Gyarados. A Tauros in gen 4 and a Drilbur in gen 8. In Scarlet, I've found... Well, technically 3. A random shiny Swablu (which was really lucky because I like Altaria a lot), a random shiny Meditite, and using the exploit, a bunch of shiny Flutter Manes (counting that as only one because of how easy that exploit is)

For some reason your videos along with JRose11 and some other select solo PokeTubers are really good for background content while I’m doing things. Either way, I’d assume that was a lot on you mentally. Keep putting out the great content! It’s much appreciated cause it helps with telling people which Pokémon are good for whatever stage of the game so we can decide how teams can work for a story playthrough that one takes their time on.

Best gen 1 bird spotted! Alright this baddy actually got a good flying type move that isn't fly in drill peck. As one of only three lines one of which is zapdos. Otherwise body slam and tri attack (one of my favorite moves) are good, normal typing generally helps in the early game. High crit rate and a multi hit move should render brock okayish, maybe. Having both stabs early on is also nice with peck. No coverage but some utility in reflect agility and other stuff scott always uses. Since ghost aren't an issue this time it'll probably be a fine run but just require some training and raw strength to oull through. (No sd is criminal)

Thanks for doing a Doduo solo run; I'd been wanting to see this one for a long time, as neither you nor JRose had ever attempted Doduo or Dodrio (the strongest Normal/Flying evolutionary line in Generation 1) As for picking up TM44 Rest, you've gotta love the fact that as an item that is gone forever once the SS Anne has departed if you choose not to collect it, the fact that it has such value in the late game works as a sort of metaphor for the way that decisions made earlier in our life can affect our later lives in either a positive or negative way

I like how there is more discussion about the metrics. I have wondered them as well but not questioning the approach. I feel a reset and blackout should be separate metrics, since blackout can be considered as intended mechanic, and the final result/standing should be counted how close the real time (divided by the speed up) was to the game time. Resets would act as a tiebreaker, probably would need to be included in the final result formula in some way. Blackouts should not be double-punishing. Never would have I thought back in my youth while trying to push the truck that in 20 years I would still be around the game, thinking new angles to approach it. Your integrity and openness help me to dig deeper.

I do feel that as chaotic as changing types every battle is, if you have an unfavorable typing you can always battle a wild Pokémon to change typings until you get a good defensive or offensive typing. I don’t know if that is good because there are no softlocks or grindspots based off of type alone, but it could also lead to type farming.

It's ME. I'M the Doduo lover! Which is actually kind of ironic because despite the fact I really like Doduo and Dodrio, I never used them in Pokemon Red or Yellow. I always had Pidgeot or Fearow or Farfetch'd by that point and never felt the need to raise up the kind of underleveled Doduo you can catch (Kanto's wild level curve is also really bad huh). I also really fondly remember the race episode of the anime because I had it on VHS. This is also the episode where Ash eats a Magikarp shaped taiyaki, which I also always really wanted as a kid. Not that I knew what it was, but like, it looked really good. Will admit seeing Doduo's eventual time I feel a little worried about Dodrio's time. Dodrio was one of those Pokemon I figured would end up doing really well because I mean, its stats are really kind of incredible. 115 Attack is pretty absurd for Generation I. But now uh...I'm kind of worried it will end up stalling and crashing like Doduo. We'll see though. Also they give Dodrio a lot of love to its movepool in later games, like in Gen 7 it gets Swords Dance, Jump Kick, and Stomping Tantrum which are all kind of crazy for it.

That first playthrough reminded me of the time i did this challenge with Spearow, and all i can say is that it is Dodrio but 10x worse, with less moves, no body slam, and also an even lower special stat (and lower stats in general but special hurts it the most). I did manage to finish the game with Spearow but i had to do a lot of shenanigans to beat it, like using mimic to learn clamp from Lorelei's Cloyster and pray that i hit all of them just to guarantee i didn't get oneshot by either Cloyster or Lapras. If you ever do a solo run with Spearow in the future, i hope you have spare sanity to lose, because i can confirm you, Lorelei will be a nightmare.

@@shadowtitanx3962 Fire’s honestly not that bad. Neutral damage against stuff like Cloyster, and decent special stats are great for mimicking Slowbro’s Amnesia, especially when it’s not going to use that move.

For Dragonite, I'm thinking maybe it's better to just go for Body Slam instead of hoping for a Hyper Beam oneshot. You lose the chance to oneshot of course, but in exchange you don't have to take two guaranteed turns from Dragonite if you miss the range. On the whole though, I was a bit surprised by these results. Not the performance I expected!

Great job! Loved that you channeled that inner (w)rapping lass on the first playthrough! Looking forward to the artwork you commissioned for the trainers. Regarding the channeler, I still loved what someone else suggested for her name some time back; "Mandy" as in "Mandatory," while also somewhat being a shout out to Mandy from Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy (both are rather creepy). ...I still may call her Mandy the status witch though. ;)

Yaaaay! I also played Pokemon Red with Doduo, also got stuck at Lorelei and did the dumbest move: I taught it fly like an idiot. I hadn't checked damages, so I didn't realise it sucked so hard. Next time I wouldn't teach it and I would get Mimic probably. I think I had an in-game time of around 7:30, which isn't too bad for a first playthrough, especially cause it was my third playthrough like that. Anyway, have a great year!

I’ve always thought Lorelei was definitely the hardest member of the E4 in Gen 1! She doesn’t have any repeats, all of her Pokémon are fully evolved, Ice is fantastic in Gen 1, & she doesn’t have 2 Onix. Especially in Yellow when her move sets are significantly better.
@ScottsThoughtsPokemon
@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Жыл бұрын
Agreed. I think for solo challenges the champion is usually slightly harder, but his strength comes from the fact you can’t switch out. Lorelei is certainly the strongest if you can.

I enjoy that Lorelei is the gate to ensure you are ready for the Elite 4. If you can’t get past bulky Pokémon with good defensive and offensive typing, you’re not getting anywhere. Maybe past Bruno, but that’s it.

Regarding modding out the evolution sequence, I might argue, most of your runs treat these 'mon as single-stage, so modding this out brings parity with actual single-stage 'mon. But, as you said, that brings in further disparity with natural runs (though that's always gonna be the case considering Surge's trash cans).
@bateltheassistant

Two heads are better then one, but in the case of Doudo that didn't do the trick for it. But for a first stage evolution that was an okay run, except for that burtal Lorelei fight. 🤔 The trouble with flying types pre gen 4,is that flying types doesn't have a lot going on with special defence, or even physical defence. And most of them don't have enough moves for stab or a lot of coverage. So I think that you've done a great job with it. We could all get stubborn when it comes to winning, so I can totally get that, because I do that in all of my runs, because that makes the run somewhat fun for me. 😊 By the way the art for the rocket was really on point. 😉Keep up the good work.

Dude, I watch a TON of JRose11, but wanted to see what your channel looked like. Your editing and visuals are both amazing in comparison. Two comments: *Don't need to see TM/HM list as default overlay between fights. Not sure if this is you or a default overlay. More screen is better. Maybe just when you're discussing move options? *Generally speaking, talking a little more slowly makes videos more palatable for international viewers as well. This is coming from a fellow speed speaker. Speed talking is good for Shorts. Good stuff overall--keep it up!
