He did great! Yes, hollow and I think the judges comments were all very fair, but......he tried every movement and was consistent. Time and practice and you will be sweeping the board. So very happy for you.
@RidingWithRhi9 ай бұрын
Absolutely agree - I think the judge was quite generous (as indeed they are at unaffiliated intro level). If we can just turn that lovely power into relaxation and thoroughness (for both of us!) we’ll be away! He tried so hard ❤️🥰 with a better rider he’d look even stronger, but he’s got me so we must aim for just progress !

Knowing in advance that you misplaced your keys, I confess that I was worried about watching the video but persisted because I am keen to watch you and Harley progress. Harley is so awesome. If you want him to keep his mane, you could plait him as if he were an Andalusian or Friesian. That's my plan for my horse.

I can 100% relate to the keys. I did this the other day. I was practicing trotting in hand with my youngster for our first ever in hand show and didn’t realise until it was pitch black my car key had fallen into the school! Eventually found them 😅 the relief! A few days later practicing my bank card fell out and I didn’t even know until a friend let me know she found it and where I could find it 🫣 not sure how I adult sometimes…

Wow what a great first test Rhi! The smile on your face says it all. I wonder how you’d have done if you hadn’t lost ur keys and had a warm up first 😂 there’s absolutely loads of potential there and I can’t wait to see it happen 🎉❤
@RidingWithRhi9 ай бұрын
Haha! Yeah I really shot myself in the foot with the warm up. I was used to Woody who needed 10/15 mins and then IN! Totally didn't think about the five year old brain needing to spend 10-15 mins purely adjusting to the number of new horses on the yard.

@@RidingWithRhiI'm personally a 30 minutes minimum person no matter the horse. even if you just spend some of that time chilling and watching
@RidingWithRhi9 ай бұрын
@@NoThankUBeQuiet Woody needed 10-15 then straight into the test so you didn't lose the energy, so this one rather caught me by surprise! Harley is also not great at stopping and starting to so i was trying to go straight from warm up to arena, but it really needed 40 mins minimum

Oh 100%! I always am in two minds about whether to put these videos up because I’m very self critical and all I think is “why did you ride like that? Why were your hands /legs/shoulders doing X Y Z”. But, there is power in progress and I’m excited to set this out as our starting point.
@MissRabbitsAngel9 ай бұрын
I was wondering why you didn't use your new equitex hahaha ;) Given the weather, your lost car keys, Harley being a young horse etc. you guys did great! Essentially it was just tension which will go away with practice and getting to know each other better, right? Congratulations on 4th place!
@RidingWithRhi9 ай бұрын
I was SOOO annoyed I didn’t get to use the Equitex 🤣 and yes, it’ll come in time. We’ve almost cracked it in the schooling but a competition atmosphere just adds extra pressure. ❤️

I love your positive energy and enthusiasm! I have a 5 year old Connemara in the US. Thinking of switching to dressage from ranch riding after next year. I miss it although the ranch riding does suit him too. Best of luck with your new boy, he is awesome! Well done! BTW, I am one of your “not so rich old ladies” who watches my horse being trained and shown. I have too many aches and pains to risk it. I do take him for walks and do ground work with him.

I just love Harley and your journey. I'm amazed that you're already out there at a competition. Well done! Rhi I have a money related question for you. I know you do the money diaries and you use fairly reasonably priced things, apart from the equitex lol. But in general, do you think spending more money on equestrian things is worth it? For example brushing boots can be vastly different in price, but would an expensive pair be better (maybe better air circulation, more range of sizes, holding up better)? Same for bridles, saddle pads (before you came along with the equitex I used to think PS of Sweden and the likes is were you can drain a bank account),... etc. With black Friday coming up, how about a video on if things are worth the price or buy this rather than that type of video.
@RidingWithRhi9 ай бұрын
Thank you! I won’t have time to turn around a video like that for Black Friday, but I will say this about the Equitex (and full disclosure, I am now a brand ambassador for them): they are, to my knowledge, the only saddle pad brand to have conducted any research on the affect of their pad on pressure and that to me speaks for itself: thesaddlepadcompany.com/independent-pressure-testing/ It’s like you said yourself: sometimes (not always!) more expensive items hold up better or are better for the horse. Similarly, there are cheaper supplements you could use than the Audevard ones I use, but I choose them because they are a lab backed by studies and showcasing exact ingredients. There are cheaper coats than Toggis, but I believe Toggis are some of the best. It’s a balance as with anything, sone brands are good, some are not. I try to look for science and research to back my decisions and think of things as investments in preventing issues for me or my horse down the line. I hope that helps ❤️

Well done! With everything going on for you during the vlog, it was really relatable. It is such a nice reminder for me to just get on with things and complete activities toward my goals. (I tend to get too much in my head and preemptively quit 😅) I love listening to dressage voice overs, but I don’t understand the terms. What does “hollowing” mean? I was trying to figure out which body part to focus on lol. Thanks for sharing as always! 💜
@RidingWithRhi9 ай бұрын
Thanks Evie! Ok so “hollowing” is essentially when a horse comes “above” the contact, avoiding the bit/contact and not working correctly through the back. It is essentially the opposite of working in a correct outline where the horse is using their top line muscles and working on the bit. You can spot it in this videos mist obviously when Harley throws his head up / out.
