Go Here to Download Your Book - www.myboxingcoach.com - Salvador Sanchez is for me absolutely a boxing legend. Some might argue that his career was too short to justify the title of boxing legend, but for me the young age at which we lost him and the amazing record he had amassed until his tragic passing justifies even more the legend.
This video is a Salvador Sanchez breakdown in which I describe my 5 fearsome factors of the Mexican legend. These are the boxing style elements that I think made Sanchez the unbelievably effective fighter that he was and the elements that I think would have, in time, made Sanchez undeniably one of the greatest fighters the sport has ever seen.
For me, Salvador Sanchez is one of the best 'box fighters' I have ever seen, meaning that he has sublime boxing skills as well as the ability to go toe-to-toe in the trenches both with equal effectiveness.
Salvador Sanchez was the world featherweight champion, reigning for 2 years between 1980 and 1982. He turned professional at the age of 16 and amassed a record of 44-1-1 before he was tragically killed at the age of 23. Despite his incredible achievement, making 9 defences against genuine top class opposition, we did not see Sanchez in his prime - he was only going to get better over the coming years.
My 5 Fearsome Factors of the Salvador Sanche boing style:
1. Wonderful balance and guard. Bodyweight central, nice width on the stance and a functional guard position meaning that he was always able to block incoming punches with minor adjustments. When he did square his boxing stance at close range his body movement would go into overdrive, making him very difficult to hit.
2. The edge of range 'bounce'. At the edge of range, Sanchez has a wonderful 'bounce' in his stance. He uses an outstanding jab and lots of feints to trigger the opponent. He applies pressure. But is also willing to back off as he needs as part of his overall strategy.
3. Angles and variations of punches - From long range to short range, Sanchez uses a wonderful array of varied punches. He is always looking to set up, is bold with his attacks often leading with left hooks and right crosses and varies the hand position for hooks and uppercuts.
4. Punching with body movement. Sanchez has the most incredible ability to seamlessly combine his punching with head movement. He will use slips off straight punches, he will use rolls off hooks and uppercuts and will use the duck off pretty much any punch. This makes him defensively super-efficient and incredibly difficult to counter punch. Salvador is a master of combining attack and defense.
5. Conditioning. Whilst the average Sanchez opponent looks like they've been involved in a 6 hour bar room brawl after 8 rounds of fighting, Sal looks like he's been having tea with the Dalai Lama for the last hour. He is serene in the corner and looks like he could literally fight all night.
My dream fight - Salvador Sanchez vs Julio Cesar Chavez at super-weight. The greatest dream fight in the history of boxing, not case to argue :-)
Cheers
Fran

Perpetual motion is spot on! Shared The Ring 1981 Fighter of the Year honors with the greatest fighter of the 80s, Sugar Ray Leonard. Gone at 23 and already a legendary career. Great ones will come and go, but another one like Salvador Sanchez, not likely.

Salvador Sanchez was a couple of years before my time. I have always been a JCChavez fan. Once I started to watch old fights of Sanchez!!! It was clear to me he was the complete boxer! The kinda guy you hate to fight. Not only because he's tough but because of his stamina and calm demeanor from rd 1-15. I have never seen a fighter like him and I doubt we ever will. Even Ali thought Sanchez had the opportunity to be the GOAT!!! Which I believe he would've been. As a Mexican American it's tough thinking about Sanchez vs Chavez! even though that is the dream fight that never happened!!! I appreciate how you embrace the Mexican fighters and give them their respect.

This was great! I agree totally and enjoy watching his fights. Nelson had A LOT of heart in his fight with him. At one point Sanchez dropped him in a corner and it seems like as soon as Azumahs butt hit the mat, he sprung right back up like a baby deer and re-engaged with Sanchez immediately. He lost, but to me even the loser in a fight at that skill level is a winner because they give it all they've got. Sanchez is boxing poetry in motion and the way he would drag his rear leg up to get lateral and weave is amazing. Thank you for doing this. 🙏🏼🥊

Thank you so much for pointing out how great he was to youngsters who've never seen or heard of him. I remember hearing the news on the radio of his passing. I was 12 years old and completely devastated. My favourite fighter of all time. His future also included eusebio pedroza and Alexis arguello besides chavez.

I said this on another video, if you watch Sanchez he never, ever has to open his mouth to breathe, and with his absolutely stoic facial expression, and his incredible elusiveness, it must have been like fighting the wind. RIP King

Only just discovered this clip re sanchez. Love this discussion and analysis of the great man, love the great descriptions and communication and scouse humour (fellow scouser here) ...recently ive come to feel that sanchez is a contender for PFP greatest ever...perhaps the only thing that stops us from establishing that is his terribly sad early demise which prevented a rise up the weight levels and which probably a lighter-weight great needs for that title. I will look for further vids by you, mate. Brilliant stuff.

I'm a 40 year old man that has always been ready to defend himself with his hands. I'd never been trained to fight properly. Your videos in conjunction with my own Coach's tutelage have turned me from someone that did not know how yo deliver his natural punching power, to the one person in the gym, Noone seems in a hurry to spar. I love the 5 fearsome series. How about Sugar Ray Robinson or Marvelous Marvin Hagler? Thank you coach. Your channel has ultimately made a real difference in my skill level.

Thanks a lot for create this video on the great late champion Salvador Sánchez. There are several precious nuggets in it. I was puzzled by the uppercut you showed(13:40), then I started test it against the orthodox & vertical uppercuts and I find it is more powerful than both of them because allows use more efficiently the chest muscles. Indeed, Salvador was a genius! BTW, this kind of uppervut is called a short punch in Okinawan shorin ryu and doubles as an upper block (age uke), it's considered a kyuko (small secret), so not much people is exposed to this technique. Please keep going coach!

Beat the best Puerto Rican and best African fighters of all time. The thing about Sanchez is that he really loves the craft of the sport. He can KO his opponents he has overmatched but he really enjoys to do everything better than his opponent and fight one level up. If he has to increase his level, he increases his level. He KO'd Nelson in the last round because Nelson wouldn't accept that Sanchez was better than him and wanted to be KO'd rather than lost on points. Nelson ran that division for many years after Sanchez died. Sanchez took boxing like an artform and was still improving from fight to fight. He would have improved even more. His fight against Chavez would have happened and we would be looking back now saying that fight was the fight for the greatest Mexican fighter of all time and I believe Sanchez would prevail. Personally I think Sanchez is hands down the best fighter I have seen. He was also getting to a stage after this Nelson fight where he was carrying intimidation factor into the ring because he seemed to have more up his sleeve so you didn't quite know how good he was. He was never seen to get tired in the ring. The man was 23 years old. I think what you said at the start is the truest and saddest thing about Sanchez - The biggest tragedy in boxing history. He had so much left. He was only getting started. For many people of Mexico he is one person you cannot say anything bad about. Believe it or not you will actually risk your life if you disrespected his name in public in Mexico. RIP to the GOAT! Never forgotten!!

Without doubt? You really think so? Did you watch technical breakdowns from RD? That guy is a disquised wizard seriously. Personally cant choose a better fighter between the 2, salvador would probably win in if he was a welterweight or higher because he was an absolutely amazing boxer ( the only thing roberto duran could struggle with at higher weights ). But he probably would have gotten knocked out at lightweight by duran because thats just prime prime duran and at that weight his power and strength are just overwhelming. But overall i cant say who is better, they would both win and lose some against each other i think
