Is this the best PTO driven wood chipper for you and your compact tractor? Here’s a rundown of the operation of the Woodland Mills WC68 wood chipper mated to the Kubota B2601 compact tractor. Is the B2601 strong enough to run the WC68 chipper? Watch and see for yourself. Oh, and what happened to the Husqvarna 450 Rancher chainsaw? I replaced it with the Husqvarna 455 Rancher... but why? #MCGtv #B2601 #WoodlandMills #Husqvarna455 ‪@HusqvarnaUSA‬ ‪@woodlandmills‬
This chipper may also work with other B series, LX 2610, and L series Kubota tractors. MCG WC68 Wood Chipper

I'm a Husky chainsaw owner as well. Mine is the original "Rancher". I don't remember the CCs, but I think the original one is smaller (engine) than later. My friends all have Stihl. Lots of them are on their second saw (not chipper related...), but my old Ranger just runs and runs. Even in California with our super expensive ethanol garbage fuel I have been able to protect the carb and have not rebuilt it yet. Thanks for the tip on the hopper!!! My Dad was the same way about stacking things like wrenches on a car battery (you know what's coming.....)

Another great video! I purchased a T-Rex Woodland Mills Trailer a few years ago. It hauls, and dumps up to 2000lbs with a winch. Great for hauling firewood, gravel, top soil, wood chips etc... Woodland Mills was great to work with. I live in Alaska and the shipping costs were quite high, Woodland Mills ate 25 percent of the shipping cost just to get their product to Alaska. Quite impressed with their customer service as well as their products. Thanks for an excellent review of the WC68 chipper.

I really enjoyed your video. Leaving a chainsaw in the chipper chute is exactly something I would do! I can't tell you how many times I have put things on top of my car (even after I told myself that I should not do that) and forgot about them seconds later..... I remember them shortly thereafter when I hear them bang off the car as I am driving down the road. I have a B2650 and have been thinking of buying a WC68.

Run WC68 on an L series Kubota. Works well! One drawback with the unit worth mentioning, it does have trouble clearing through the chute throat white pine needle branches. Keep plenty of needle free or leave free branches around to clear the unit or you'll be opening the chute a lot to clear the pine paste clog in the chute.

Thanks WKS. I haven’t had any problem with the chute clogging or backing up. My biggest complaint is that the intake roller has a hard time grabbing larger limbs. I do love this attachment though! -Ed

I haver the same chipper. It works great. The support from them is excellent. If you have a issue they will help you on the phone. They will ship you parts if required. I also run mine on a B2650 tractor. It does not drag the tractor down. 4 blades uses less power. The chute will plug up if you are chipping green cedar small branches. I find if you spray the chute with Jig a Loo dry graphite it really helps. If you do plug it the chute opens up so easy and it is easy to clean it out. Now for the good Husky going in I have another story. I use a 4 ft. bar to help clean out the chute. Well I had to move the tractor and where did I set that bar. You guessed it. The knifes did not like the steel as much as plastic. So like he said never/never put anything in that hopper than wood.

@@MyClutteredGarage While I use a Stihl MS250 chain saw for my typical tree and limb cutting, I also use a 12" Dewalt 20V battery chain saw that I leave on the WC68 chain saw holder. It is so convenient for quickly cutting off branches that don't easily fit into the chipper chute on a 4-6" tree.

One interesting thing to point out is that the moment of inertia of 24" flywheel is over triple that of an 18" flywheel of the same thickness. This is really a much bigger upgrade over the smaller unit than it sounds.

@@MyClutteredGarage I had an oak tree fall kinda l goofy and pinch my 029 and yank it out of my hands. Snow had laid it over to about four feet high. I always plan for escape. Saw and tree went west and I went east. Tree was down and saw was off. All quiet. Pick up the saw , oil draining everywhere and the bar was pointing up like morning wood. Case was split . That led to my 461. Bought a blown 029,swapped my running gear into that case,still running. 22 years.

Very good points you made. I have a Yanmar 2002d, which is a 20hp tractor, and have been considering one of these for awhile, and was almost set on the wc48. Seems like I could go with the WC68, as anything larger than 3”, I usually cut for firewood anyway.

What’s your HP at the PTO? WM recommends 20 at the PTO. My tractor is 26 hp and puts out 19 at the PTO so I’m just at the limit for the WC68. They have great customer service. Give them a call 👍

did something similar just the other day. Was moving a fridge in my garage that I had place a new bottle of 12 year old scotch on top of moments before in my hurry to clean up. I thought "ill get that in a min" I did when it hit me in the back as I slid the fridge on its way to smashing off the concrete floor. The garage floor was soaked with the sweetest smell of scotch mixed with my tears.

regarding the adjustable feed rate idea. I hope this message is worth reading. your idea really got me thinking and rambling. the concept sounds good and is easy to understand -- how it could be modulated by the position of the feed wheel. while it could be made safer (?) by having the speed ramp up and down smoothly and relatively slowly rather than suddenly, an automatic change in feed rate would be a safety issue. i could (almost) program a (Arduino) microcontroller to do this based on the feedback of a position or tension sensor feeding info to a stepper or servo motor. i love the idea, but i would not do it. i will just try to feed similar stuff in and adjust as needed (for general size) and pass on auto-optimizing the feed rate. I already see myself wanting the auto adjusting rate while i am standing at the chipper.
@MyClutteredGarage
@MyClutteredGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this thoughtful comment. I’ve found it seems that larger limbs kind of naturally slow down the feeder when it’s set to 2.5 to 3. It seems like a good all around federate. I could definitely speed it up for smaller branches but I often just walk away and let it take its time while I grab the next branch. I’m with you - I’ll probably never do it, but it seems doable. Thanks! -Ed

Hello Ed, I just subscribed to your channel. Your editing skills are great, it is very enjoyable to watch! This wood chipper is very well designed! As you said, being at the lower end range of PTO power does not mean you can't make it. But there is some limitations in size. Good news is that your wood chipper is going to last 2x longer. Pretty much like you, anything over 2 inches goes in the firewood. Thanks Ed!

I think you're probably right about automating the feed rate, might need to figure out how to put some cam action in judging by the angles from my 12" screen. I have been then watching all the WC68 KZfaqs I can. I see a reoccurrence on about 1/2 the KZfaqs and that is the Safety/Neutral/forward/reverse orange bar will move out of "forward" while folks are feeding their material and then they stand right next to the hopper holding the bar in the forward position. That seems dangerous to be positioned there when feeding large and bushy limbs. The other half of the KZfaqs I watch including the one from WL Mills show the Chipper consuming every kind of branch or trunk imaginable without ever needing to touch the orange bar once engaged. Is there an adjustment? My tractor (a 1950's Ford) is at the bottom and below the PTO HP rating and so I am concerned this could be a HP thing. What are your thoughts? Thank you for this excellent and honest KZfaq!
@MyClutteredGarage
@MyClutteredGarage 10 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting! I have not had any issues with the safety bar. I’m sure you can tighten up the connection so it takes a little more force to push it in. I imagine your Ford is a gas engine. I would be concerned about anything much less than 19 hp at the PTO. You might consider the WC 48.

your bearings are probably detroit bearings and they are easily damaged if you get wire on the shaft. they are a bear just for time to replace, that happened to me. my unit is a small tow behind. the compression rate is probably about 20 to 1, although it can go up. remember that compression is cube to cube volume, and the mass will remain the same, but the area is occupies will decrease if chipping greens stuff, you will get sap, or the plant amino acids on your fly will and up the discharge chute and you will need to clean that out every so often, which i do with a chisel and just run the blade over the metal (take care not to be injured, those chipper blades are sharp) on the topic of chipping green (which was 90% of what i did), the biological composting that will take place will sink your volume height significantly in a very short time, and if the pile is large enough, you could have spontaneous combustion/explosion due to the decay inside. i have not had either one, but keep in mind 36 inches will become hot enough to keep snow free over two or 3 months of a winter. check out composting for additional safety issues on this last point, many trees/shrubs have a natural fungicide in the amino acids and this usually takes about 3 weeks to dissipate. once this happens your pile of goodies will almost disintegrate into compost in a few months. only then would i put it around a garden as the composting takes energy that plants would otherwise get from the fungus/bacteria and insects that help your plants.

I had a 35 cc Husky I would have run through your chipper. Always hard to start. I was always tired and mad before I made the first cut of the day. Sent it in for service, got it back and it burned the top out of the chain oil reservoir before it used up the first tank of fuel. Shop refused to even quote for repair. Gave the parts away. Finished the job with an electric chainsaw. Bought a 310 Echo. Starts every time. Even after being left for 2 years with fuel in it.

I'm getting ready to buy one of these for my JD770, torn between WC46 and WC68. My rear PTO hp is rated at 20, so I think I'm OK there. But my rear lift capacity is 815# and this thing is over 700# according to the website. You mentioned in your video that yours is over 800#?, so rear lift capacity makes me abit nervous. What is your rated rear lift capacity? Did you have any troubles with moving this thing around? Did you have to add any weight to the front of your machine for balance? BTW, appreciate the sub humor (I'm an old USN sub sailor)!
@MyClutteredGarage
@MyClutteredGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Nick, I have no problem whatsoever lifting and moving it around. The B2601 really doesn't seem to know it's there. However, first I do do have a front end loader that helps act as a counterweight, and second according to tractordata.com, my rear lift capacity is 1808 lbs whereas the 770 is rated at 815. Although these tractors look to be similar in size, that's a surprising difference. Good news though, I just looked at the WM website. It says the WC68 is actually 710lbs. The 825lbs is the shipping weight. I can tell you that the folks at WM are great with customer service and answering emails. I'd check with them to be sure. Thanks for watching and for your comment! And thanks for your service too!!! Hey let WM know you saw my video :)

Your video was very informative and I really enjoyed it. One thing you mentioned is 540 rpm PTO. What engine speed do you need on the tack to achieve that. My 2601 does not have a 540 visual PTO speed on the tack. Is the 540 PTO speed at 2800? Thank you the great videos you do.
@MyClutteredGarage
@MyClutteredGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Wayne. Yes, on my tractor 540 at the PTO is achieved at about 2800 on the engine. There should be a little red tick mark on your B2601 tach to indicate where 540 at the PTO is. Hope this helps. -Ed

Howdy Ed - Always enjoy your topics. I too have the B2601 and looking for a chipper. Does this have shear bolts? Slip clutch? I looked at the WM website and downloaded the manual for the WC68 but could not find info in the text or even the parts break down. Let us know if you know. Thanks.

I’m almost positive it has a shear bolt. I think it will bog down and stall the B2601 before it shears. I run at full throttle, never sheared a bolt, and only stalled it once.

Thinking about getting the WC68 for my B2601. I'm sold on the horsepower at the PTO but my concern is the weight. All the videos show operation on perfectly level ground but I'll be downhill to the chipping location, uphill returning, and sometimes not level where I'm chipping. It's not the rocky mountains or anything but can the B2601 carry it on a grade?

I think your idea for an adjustable feed rate is a little too simplistic. The size of the branch is not a perfect analog for hydraulic load; a heavy/thick branch without limbs is a large load that won’t move the wheel up as much as a small branch with lots of branches poking out of it. I think you’d need a hydraulic pilot that adjusts based on pressure differential across the hydraulic motor to regulate load at maximum.

It has design flaws. Blade is to far from feed roller. This space gets clogged with leaves. Then the roller gets stopped. This space also allows branches to go side ways once they are no longer pushed into the blades. Wish I had known this problem before I bought the machine. If you just have branches and no leaves the not that much problem. The stationary blade is off to the side. Should be across the bottom to make for better cutting.
@MyClutteredGarage
@MyClutteredGarage Жыл бұрын
Hi Dennis. I haven’t had any of these problems. Do you run the PTO at least 540 RPM? The biggest issue I’ve had is that the intake roller has a hard time grabbing branches larger than 3 inches.
