How did you account for the increasing amount of material that thus diluted the oil? For example, initially it’s a few garage bins of soil with 11,000 units, but at the end it’s a lot more soil/compost so hypothetically the amount of oil could have stayed the same if it was just diluted with enough stuff? (Not to try to say what u did didn’t work, I’m sure it did, but it’s important to be critical to improve for next time!) it would also be cool if you guys did a control group where you just left a portion of the contaminated soil out and see what changed over the time without the mushrooms/mycelium

Good question, the inoculated straw/sawdust spawn, and burlap plus the uninoculated straw added on-site are fully composted when done. (this project took two years and three inoculations) So the amount of material added once fully composted is a very, very small fraction of the overall total mass. It may look like a lot in the beginning but by the time all the organic matter was decomposed, we basically had three garbage cans of soil just like we started with. In this project, we did not do control but we have on other projects. The goal here was just to help this landowner not have to throw the soil in the landfill. Check out our mycoremediation report on our website if you are interested in more scientific data. Thanks!

could you suggest a pre-emptive course for a homestead that is planning to have a mechanic shop on site? nothings built yet so now would be the time to build a system to handle the unavoidable spills etc.. the system I was always taught was clay litter and trashbags, but not wanting to create landfill waste if at all possible

It would be possible to either set up a bioswal catchment that was regularly reinoculated with fungi. Or use natural waddles to absorb any oil onsite and set up a remediation bin to remediate the material. Hope that helps!

Hi Levon, is it possible to grow button and shiitake together since their spawn run and fruiting temperatures are quite similar ?
@levondurr2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure. I have not grown button mushrooms personly. :)

Wow! This took 2 years??

Yes. We did three deferent inoculations and because of the location, the mycelium was really only active during the spring and fall. The winter was too cold and the summers too hot.

Levon Durr how long would this typically take if it were in a controlled environment?
@levondurr3 жыл бұрын
@@mini_blessings In a controlled setting you could most likely remediate soil in three to nine months. Depending on how many treatments were necessary and assuming each treat was over a three-month period. :)

No gloves?
@levondurr5 ай бұрын
Yes, we wear gloves whenever we need to touch the contaminated soil but not needed when handling the straw or mycelium. :)
