Geoffrey - another kiwi ML7 owner here. I just followed your jaw grinding process on my very old Burnerd 3 jaw. Mine was quite a bit worse than yours, so I had to take a fair amount off, but now runout is down to virtually nothing. I used a Dremel with a toolpost holder attachment which allowed me to use accuracy of the lathe during the whole process. Thanks very much for the videos. Love the humour.

Thank you for the trick, Geoffrey. I applied the same process today with success on my both Pratt Burnerd chucks.

Citric acid only works properly when it's warm. It still works at room temp, but try warm, you'll see the difference in how well it could work.

Nice one.. I'm a bit late to the party having just bought an old MK7 in need of a restore. Looking forward to watch the rest of your videos. Will reach out if I need of advice if you don't mind, especially where you had your bed skimmed in New Zealand.

Just a bit of advice for next time, when trying to grind the jaws down the best method (in my opinion) is to get yourself a ring that you know is circle, something as circular as you can find. Then use the inner diameter jaws or the outer steps in other words to clamp it as tightly as you can. That way you can be certain that there is no backlash when grinding at the jaws, it'll also help to keep them stable and stop them from flexing, giving you a better finish and hopefully more accurate surfaces on the jaws to clamp items with. Just something my machining teacher showed me, I'm sure there are a million other ways to do this of course. Nice work though!
@varjagg
@varjagg 6 жыл бұрын
That's the wrong way to do it, as the forces clamping the outer ring are opposite to "normal" workholding. You can drill and pin the jaws ends to clamp a ring "in" though. The clamping force has to be the same direction as normal workholding force for the surface you grind.

Finished a 1950"s ML7 rebuild here a few months ago. Only need to add the Myford Headstock guard label. Have a copy off Google (of sorts) but just wondered what was the program you used for your label?

Geoff, at 7:56 in the video, you are working on graphics. Did you draw over the logo in a vector program, or is that something that scans it? What drawing program are you using? Thanks, and love your videos.
