I have 3 Myford ML7 headstocks that need restoration. There is of course a lot more to it, like changing damaged parts, eg. broken off teeth in the back-gear system, oilers, attending to the spindle itself and the "cosmetics" ie. painting, but central to an effort to bring it back to proper functionality is, in my eyes at least, rescraping the bearings.
The first part of the documentation I made covers the scraping of the bearings. The next will be measurements and refitting to the bed and then testing as well as a video on an experimental effort to improve the MT2 taper.. I plan to grind these in-situ anyway if needed.
I plan to install an ELS system on 2 of these machines, which will be a little different than for the Super 7's I have done, adjusting for smaller design changes between these 2 lathe types, building on my experiences and hopefully adopting the aquired knowledge in the best manner.

I can't make a ball bearing, but I can make a plain bearing. After the zombie apocalypse, that's the construction I'll be making for all the gunsmiths.

Thanks for making this excellent video Jan. I'm attempting to scrape my bearings at the moment and this is perfect for reference.

Hi Jan, I was wondering if you could help me with an issue I'm having whilst scraping my bearings? Initially I had full contact at the top of the bearing sides along the full length of each bearing but with no contact along the bottom or further down the sides. At this point the shaft felt nice and tight with no play. Lightly scraping the tops to increase the contact lower down resulted in slight side to side play in the shaft and very little contact at the tops. If I further scrape the lower areas with the goal of increasing the contact at the tops of the wall this play becomes worse. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Thanks

@@TheOnlyMosesMalone It may be that the flats where the 2 bearinng laves meet are too high. In other words, you will have to lower this area also so that the "full/enveloping circle" is smaller
