Re-assembly of headstock
Spindle adjustment & measurements
I managed to break the casting of the tumbler reverse lever in a futile attempt to free a rusted solid plunger. Bought a new on off Ebay, and moved the gears over, this time with more "finesse" :)
I replaced the thrust bearing "combo". This consist of 2 one-sided thrust bearings mounted back to back, with a distance piece inbetween so that when the inner race flanges are squeezed together a certain preload is obtained.
NB! I of course replaced both as a pair. .the video content can be mistaken so that only one of the 2 was replaced, but this is just down to the stupidity of the video maker/editor.. (had a pair of the Myford clutch assembly bearings as well as for the Raglan also on the milling machine table when documenting the sequence..)
I followed the description on the spindle-assembly as written into the instruction manual. I have a copy, but you may also just google for example "Myford Super 7 spindle adjustment" , which will produce a lot of pics and threads for guidance
Next up will be measurements

Hi Jan, I have just rebuilt a Super7 , thank goodness someone has posted their experience.A great help. I have not the tech saavy to be able to send any video. I noticed that you have scraped the ways ,where I had mine all precision ground. Mine was a long project to repair much abuse. Thanks and Cheers Allen.

Thanks for the comment. The lathe was really a basket case, all rusted. Admittedly it would have been easier & better to send it out for grinding, but I decided it was going to be scraped since I (think) I know how to. It is not such a large job really.

Thanks also. I try to share my "experiences". The Myford is possibly one of the most documented small lathes around, but still I think it is nice to get another angle on things

You're welcome.. more acoming! I am slowly getting to the gearbox and gears and "motorizing assembly" as I have learnt it is called (motor, pulley wheels, belts, clutch etc.), but must finish up on the apron and do the cross- and compund slides first.

Looking forward with anticipation. I was lucky enough with the people I bought mine from - everything was spot on. Just needed to add a gearbox.

Yes, me too!. I have 3 pairs in different sizes. They were introduced to us students by Richard King in one of his scraping classes. He said they were very functional, and sure they are! I bought mine online from USA. They are the original Dubuque brand and is good quality :)

How do you remove the old rear roller bearings? I can’t seem to find any video or guidance about how to get them out.
@jansverrehaugjord9934
@jansverrehaugjord9934 11 ай бұрын
They are a slide (slight interference) fit and will come out either way, so just press them out left or right.. after removal of the castellated nuts, of course!

Dear Jan, I have to replace the annular bearings as well. In your video you mention that they have to be installed back to back. What I don't know and can't find on the Internet is how the bearings have to be installed (what is the frontside and what is the backside of a bearing). Do they have to be installed with the engravings on the outer races pointing to each other or with the engravings pointing outwards? Can you please clarify this? With kind regards (from Holland), Ron Veraart

Hi there, I have shown a little more in this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fc5lq5afxsmzaJ8.html Anyway, I need to check the bearings themselves to see which sides are engraved. I think this may also vary between manufacturers? However, I believe the thicker side of the outer rings shall face one another. Will check, but you can also tru to look here: www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/postings.asp?th=86583

Is there any advantage to set the preload without the gears in place, except for practicing? I guess it needs to be redone again after the spindle is removed to insert the gears(?). Btw thanks so much for all your videos, they have been of great help for me refurbishing a super 7.
@jansverrehaugjord9934
@jansverrehaugjord9934 3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome. Glad to hear the video efforts are of help. The "relative position" of the double set of bearings that act both as thrust bearings and as the rear guidance can be set and then the spindle removed and re-inserted.. if needed. It has been awhile since this, but I probably went back and forth and was also doing this for the purpose of the video, so if confusing, I apologize. However, you can as said do the setting of the rear bearing pair and fix this and then afterward mount the gears, BUT, as you note, the preload for these bearings may change slightly, so it is possible that a readjustment is neccessary

Hi Jan. Can you please tell me the RAL code of the grey paint? Im assuming all grey super 7s are the same grey? Good job thanks
@jansverrehaugjord9934
@jansverrehaugjord9934 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. The designation of the paint used is:QK 055S.SS144, which is not a RAL code (as far as I know). It was the closest I could get from a sample of the original. However, I think the "real" color and paint is obtained from several suppliers. Just google "myford grey paint". For example one here: www.stationaryengineparts.com/Tom-Senior-milling-machine-enamel.-CMEE_GB122222.html

@jansverrehaugjord9934
@jansverrehaugjord9934 5 жыл бұрын
No problem.. just trying to understand your problem. :) The spindle is essentially moved back and forth with the adjustment of the castellated nuts. Your problem can be that the position of these castellated nuts are not correct. The way this works is that these nuts (screwed into the casting) pushes against the outer rings on the pair of bearings that make up the rear thrust /alignment bearing. The preload on this pair of bearings are set by forcing the inner rings against oneanother. This is done by closing the lock nut on the rear of the spindle, the other side of the bearing inner rings being tight up against a sleeve fixed against a step on the same spindle. Essentially a clever and simple system.
