I was asked for an audio test of the JBL Control One speakers. Here it is. I did my best. It gets interesting 4 min into the video.

I have 2 pairs of these as front and rear height speakers in my 7-2-6 Home Theatre set-up, I also have two SVS PB1000 subs, cross the Controls 1's at 90Hz in your Receiver, these do a great job in small to medium sized rooms.

Nice test! That distortion in low frequencies at the second song is from the speaker ou mic saturation?

are these consider wide dispersion? intend to use for ceiling mounted speakers for atmos.

I do believe that amp is a bit much for the C1, my 60wpc marantz could drive these to full volume at nowhere near this amount of distortion. The powered version (Control 2PM) has an amp rated at 35wpc just to give you some perspective. Either way these are hands down the BEST all around bookshelf speaker for general purposes IMHO!

The distortion is because of the speakers clipping, you can see the fuse light turn on sometimes from the bass reflex port.

I need help, I connected the same speakers to my Denon PMA 925r, half a volume and they started smelling like a burned wire now at low volume they sound desorted

I have no good suggestions at the moment. I am using a HK990 in the moment, but that one may be a little overkill for those speakers.

After 3:39 ,the light comes from the right speaker air duct. Are the windings burned?

No, there is a protection light bulb in there. When the speaker gets hit by a power surge, then the light bulb takes the hit. Genius idea, if you ask me. Take a look in this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hKeZiMmTvcrNo3k.html

I have the control 2p and it sounds like it has no bass, do I need a amp on a powered speaker? Or do I need a sub?

+utubecomment21 That microphone comes with the HK990 amplifier and it used to calibrate the amp for the speakers used.

can this be used as ceiling speakers for atmos set up?

The mounts are on the back, therefore i don't see how you could point them towards the ceiling.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I am saying, mount them on the ceiling wall on top of the listener position facing the listening position - for atmos set up.

Just replaced the foam surround on one of mine. I'm glad after looking at this. I wondered why there was an imbalance and no bass whatsoever. Calibration is one thing but Control One's are not meant for this without a cross over. Glad to see you using the calibration tools never the less.

Sorry i have no Control ;-) I mean by that, that i don't have the new x version. Therefore i cannot compare. And i like the ones i have, therefore i won't buy new ones, sorry.

Then you need more than two? I bought 6 and used 5 of them for my surround setup on my computer. That was working very well in my small office area.

A tad late but, I've got the NS-01G and it makes a bit of a buzz when no music is playing so probably not the cleanest but it powers them to neighbour complaint levels.

+Glenn Snel This particular model needs an amp, but they sell them with amp too. The powered ones are called JBL Control 2P

No they don't blow that easy. The concept is to put the overload into the light bulb and not blow the speaker coil.

Yes but first the sound is no different it's just loud, also the bulb has the same effect as a fuse that's why I said fuse.

josh green Well a fuse burns out, the light bulb doesn't. The metal wire in a fuse is exposed to regular air, where in the light bulb is a vacuum or gas surrounding the wire.

mygiguser That's exactly what it does, It has a bit of wire just like a fuse only difference is material, the the eletricity creates light. the reason they use a light bulb is so you can see when you are going to blow the light bulb.

usually the audio filters circuits have a light bulb for using the peak power and to protect the speaker ...

Frequency response starts from 80Hz - so you can't hear deeper bass sounds and the low parts of the kick drum. A Heco Odeon 200 (or even 100) or Heco Victa 300 (or even 200) are way better than this .

I bought a set of these last week £50 from richer sounds. wanted to test them, i'm very impressed. Now plan to buy 3 more sets. and the £250 Cambridge Audio AERO 9 Subwoofer (500W active sub, frequency response is 21Hz-200Hz) for a new Atmos rig in my lounge/kitchen

Why push them into such severe distortion.... or is that your recording that clipping so badly? I have a pair of these and without EQ they sound awful, harsh, unpleasant, boxy, I don't get it. I wasted my money for sure, a pair of similar prices Q Acoustics blow these out of the water IMHO .... cheers for the entertainment
