So interesting! I just got back from Mexico City on a vacation and they were serving up these things called Huaraches ... this translates to "sandal" in spanish if I'm not mistaking. It's also fried and a similar shape, although it's more of like a thick tortilla with toppings on it. That said, the pronunciation is VERY similar. Waraji (Japanese) to Huarache (Spanish, silent "H") ... coincidence?

+stvsueoka1 It could be because some Portuguese influences came to Japan when they opened the country up, because I know 'pan' for bread came from Portuguese, so maybe it's something similar? Just a thought :)
@stvsueoka1
@stvsueoka1 8 жыл бұрын
Victoria Vidaud OK, now you got me looking stuff up all over the internet hahaha .... I just looked up the Portuguese translation for the word sandal and it's "sandália". Not sure if there are other similar words in Portuguese that are closer. Then I looked on Wikipedia and it seems as if both of these words are liked to eachother in the "See Also" sections on each profile! .... Here's where the mystery deepens. They say the word "Huarache" is derived from the (Pre-Columbian Mexico) Purepecha language and their word "kwarachi" which is even closer to the Japanese version of the word! There has to be some connection hahaha

The food looks amazing! I am so envious of you guys. I'm not also on the hunt for 'Maple Cider' as that just sounds heavenly! It's really interesting to see the different foods on offer in Japan and especially that these vary from prefecture to prefecture. We sadly do not really have that in the UK; a lot of our food is the same no matter where you go. Truth be told, we don't have many unique foods in our country (unless you wish to count 'Fish'n'chips' or ' the great Cornish Pasty'?!). The idea that food varies so much depending where you visit in Japan really intrigues me and I am so looking forward to my next visit. Thank you for sharing this; as always you guys rock and I love Ryosuke's interjection at the end! :) All the best! Chris

one of the biggest things that was always stopping me from visiting japan was the food. where i live, "japanese food" is either typical western sushi, or various traditional "delicacy" type foods (which as we know in MOST cultures means "you're not gonna like this..."). We have no options to try out more common "every day" type foods, so I was worried that I would arrive and have a hard time finding anything edible.. Im super happy you made this type of video showing people that there is a huge variety of all different kinds of foods in japan. definitely something for everybody. I always look forward to your videos. you do such a great job of showing what japan is REALLY like
