If Uriah and Betsheba were technically divorced why was David instisting that Uriah go home to his wife to conceal his adultery?

Saying they were “destined” to be together is only an attempt at validating the sinful actions. It’s based on nothing at all. That excuse can be used with every sin. It also devalues the level of repentance that David had to go though to reach a high level of righteousness. Which is the real lesson.

Thank you for your teaching! The mystery of David and Batsheba lies in the names and birth order of their sons. David (Beloved) and Batsheba (daughter of oath) Listened/heard (Shammua/ Shema) and turned back (Shobab) to God. They were given (Nathan) peace (Solomon/Shalom).

Thank you Rabbi. I’m a Christian and we don’t generally have teachings about the books in the Christian Bible. I’m finding that if I want to understand books of the Tanak and the other books of the Jewish Bible seek a Rabbi. Today I find another. I always wondered about David and the Commandments. No more.

I like David but nothing can justify his unjust actions. I think the common characteristic of Christianity and Judaism is that we can criticize and question these important religions figures without fear of retribution. It is my opinion that what David did was unacceptable. It is even bad that he only repented after being caught. But its humbling that he accepted his mistake and repented. He was human. So we can't whitewash him but we must appreciate that to err is human

Notwithstanding the fact, that as a Jewish rabbi, I would assume you do not accept Yashua as Messiah, nevertheless, for us Christians, we look at your teaching with the same awe and respect that you give it, and we say that even through such a dark time that David went through, nevertheless, through that bloodline came Messiah. It’s a beautiful concept whether you accept Yashua as Messiah or not. ❤

Thanks, Rabbai, for a gorgeous telling of the story and a deep examination. So much better than the prayer breakfast notion - based on the same story - that Great Leader, appointed by God has different rules and should be served no matter his perversities. Sweet how the commentaries reveal the same truth Marcus Aurelius spotted … that "No man is, in his own heart, a villain." And atonement is indeed archetypal on the path. The Tibetan Milarepa went from burning a village in revenge to the highest attainments, fuelled by his need for huge atonement. I'll stop there in case any of my students find out that I comment on YT … and start wondering to what extent atonement may have been a motivator for me ;)

David is one of my childhood heroes. To the above said explanation by Rabbi, I am grateful. I am happy that David didn't justify himself though he had the technical reasoning to do so. One of the things I would like to offer as a counter is that the punishment of the sin was on the first child that David and Bathsheba had. So Solomon cannot be called illegitimate as suggested.

Saved by a technicality?Embarrassingly tortured explanation. Modern scholars have a more plausible explanation. David wasn’t as righteous as Jewish tradition would have us believe, and Jewish practice was different in David’s time from what it became after the temples were destroyed.

As a Christian I found it plainly obvious that what made King David a man after God's own heart was his willingness to admit his guilty in humility. I'm puzzled as the technical divorce laws. Is there anything in the laws of Moses that allowed for such a thing, or was this an evolution of the law? I appreciate the insights regarding Uriah slighting the King. I had simply assumed that it would have been the common understanding of the time that all were equal before the law of God regardless of status; so Uriah could behave that way simply because Israel had a mandate from God to exterminate neighboring nations. Was I mistaken?

From reading the whole Nach you must say even in Pshat that he didn't sin, there are so many stories before showing David's self control and after this stories there are verses saying how righteous he was, so from reading the Bible itself you know that it's not as simple the story, but the reason why the prophets wrote it this way is because they wanted you to understand why God punished David for it and also to show that on his level this was a sin for him.
