PaRappa the Rapper has been a beloved character for over twenty years, but also hasn't seen an actual proper sequel in over twenty years. He still gets new merchandise to this day, so why has there never been a new PaRappa the Rapper, a PaRappa the Rapper 3, an Um Jammer Lammy 2, or...anything? I decided to look at some spiritual successors to PaRappa the Rapper to find out why.
Here's the referenced Rodney Greenblat interview: web.archive.or...

I think I had some frazzled memory recounting the epic tale of Sony's Naughty Dog's The Last of Us' Part Dos. I think I ordered MMMM in May but was telling a friend about it a month later while playing TLOUPII (otherwise known as Tee-Loopee 2), when the game was actually out. So therefore, the idea to make a video on this was thanks to Abby Lastofus, but actually ordering the game wasn't. I'm sorry to have lied to you.

To me Parappa the Rapper 2 is just plain so good. I would unironically put it up there as one of the most enjoyable rhythm games I've ever played purely based on the fact that the games always reward you for not just playing Simon says with what you're presented. You CAN beat a Parappa game just copying the others but the fun comes from having fun, and having more freedoms. Project Rap Rabbit feels like it might have taken that angle as well which saddens me that it never saw the light of day proper.

I would argue that Um Jammer Lammy is better than Parappa the Rapper 2, and Parappa the Rapper 2 is a step down from the things that UJL achieved on inferior hardware. Don't get me wrong, Parappa 2 is way better than Parappa 1 in its gameplay, but UJL is way above both of them. Of course, the story in UJL is more "zany" compared to Parappa 1 and Parappa 2 because the stages don't feel connected to each other, but I still think that UJL is better. Also I'm not sure why Parappa 2 didn't pull a UJL and decided to add Lammy as a playable character, Parappa 2 was released on the PS2 so it is not like they couldn't do it with all the available space that they had in the disk. Yes, Parappa 2 has the "alternative difficulties" that you can get after beating all stages, but I still think that using Lammy would've been better. Heck, they even made a "We are MilkCan!" reference in the Hair Fright stage!
@FlameEliwood
@FlameEliwood Жыл бұрын
@@MrPowerGamerBR I think where Lammy does a lot in the story department, Prappa 2 does way more on the gameplay front that I think outshines Lammy. Aside from being better at registering button inputs, the game does a lot to let the player see what's coming up next with how long a line is. Jammy does this a bit as well but I think Parapp 2 personally does it better. Regardless, I want a Lammy 2

@MrPowerGamerBR
@MrPowerGamerBR Жыл бұрын
@@user-vi4xy1jw7e - You can play as Parappa after beating the game - I prefer the notes timeline (idk the name of it) from Lammy compared to Parappa 1, Parappa 2 is better since you can lookahead the notes too, but I still prefer Lammy in that regard To be honest I think there are other things but I can't remember off the top of my head, maybe I need to replay both :P Parappa 2 is also better in some regards, but I do think it was "lost potential" since it didn't go above and beyond of what Lammy had already done, even tho Parappa 2 was in significantly better hardware. So I don't think that Parappa 2 is bad, after all, I also do quite enjoy Parappa 2, but I do think that it could've polished a bit more and offered more content.

From what I hear, Greenblat's stress with working on the anime (Sony restricted him to character designs and refused to give him creative input) and how he felt he was unable to come up with anything as successful as PaRappa caused him to leave the video game industry, though he and Matsuura did come back for MMMM, which, well... He also really hated the anime, which, as a whole, was only... decent.
@X2011racer
@X2011racer Жыл бұрын
Not to mention that Greenblat also protested against having Parappa as a fighter in Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale, which fell into deaf ears. Sony only did it because of fans demanding the bulk of the roster being from the PS1 era, which wasn't represented well, having only Parappa, Sir Daniel, Toro, Sweet Tooth, and Spike/Kakeru.

I adore the 2 Parappa games and Lammy. So so unique, charmingly lovable and weird. As someone who has only played on PC for like 7 years now, a new Parappa would be the only thing that would make me buy a new PlayStation. This is definitely the fist time I've heard of this March game.. but I'm intrigued now.. I also love Vib Ribbon!

Heyo!! I wanted to say a couple things!! First, I love this video! The info is collated super well and the points are very unbiased, which I love! I wanted to bring to light some things about the series, and where it's heading. And, this is gonna sound super fake, because, ya know, everyone lies on the internet. However, since 2017 I've kept in touch with the VA of PaRappa over Facebook. Regarding the whole college situation, he honestly feels really bad about it even after this long, and is actively trying to get his life back together after a rough patch. Dred (the VA) really wants a 3rd game, he views PaRappa as a part of his identity, which I find so special, and so wholesome, his passion for the series is still so strong. From what he's told me in the past, he's currently trying to rent out studios to produce his own music, which I think is super neat!! And lastly, the main reason for us not getting a 3rd game as of now, is Sony. The VAs alone cannot make it happen, sadly, so, unless PaRappa regains a surge of popularity, or people pitch brilliant ideas to Sony that maintain the charm of the past PaRappa and UJL games, Sony will not recognise the niche demand for a 3rd game after this long. P.S. if there's anything you want me to pass on to Dred, lemme know and I'll let u know if he responds and what with!! Thank you for listening!!

Well, I think there could be a possibility that parappa could really surge up in popularity (again), there's an upcoming indie spiritual successor to parappa (like truly based off the gameplay of parappa, unlike fnf), and I've noticed it's already catching the eyes of many. Maybe once it does come out, it'll surge in popularity and maybe more attention will be brought to parappa. Though it's just a thought, and probably unlikely

i think something that could have given the game a lot more variety was if they stretched the interpretation of “marching band leader” and tried different things with it. maybe for most of the game MM doesn’t form proper marching bands but instead finds opportunities to practice leading other things like conga lines, cross country running, parties, raves, whatever, and then in the last level his leadership skills have become so well known around town that they ask him to lead the festival marching band. Kinda like how parappa doesn’t actually rap on a stage until the finale. Having different instruments and music genres in different levels would also have a lot of potential.

Honestly, what could of happened was that instead of "lets march to place..place was fun let's go to other place now" instead when they arrive major meets someone who has a problem and he uses his baton kinda like a wand and uses the button input like parrapa to orchestrate music while the character with the problem sings. After the song ends the character gets inspired by major to join him and unlock a song or singing option. During the games ending (and reference with major losing the baton) he realizes that the magic wasn't just the baton, but from major believing in himself similar to how parappa believed in himself at every song stage.

Honestly i think the reason why Parappa 3 hasn't happened is simpler if i would guess its beacuse. The games are short, There isn't much opportunity for dlc and in game items and a rhythm adventure game is not cheap to make and beacuse the games short length alot of people wouldn't be okay with paying 60 or 70 dollars for it. With these factors in mind i don't think Sony feels its worth making another entry in the Parappa series.

I never understood why Sony neglects their numerous legacy IPs. It feels like the only PS1 games they ever care about are titles they don't even own which include Crash, Spyro, Metal Gear Solid, and Final Fantasy VII. "Genere's niche" Given the success FNF had, there is no excuse a rhythm game can become successful today. The Kickstarter for Rap Rabbit failed because of how poorly run the campaign runs like not even showing any concept gameplay until there was less than a week left as well as not even properly publicizing it. Also the stretch goals were beyond asinine.... they asked 3 million dollars for a Switch port at first despite it being known how a Switch dev unit doesn't cost that much... they even had stretch goals for backer exclusive stages... I've heard of Major Minor's Majestic March back in 2012 when I first got in the Parappa franchise. The idea of a rhythm game with motion controls sounded like a horrible idea for 15 year old me and the fact that veterans in the industry thought it would work is laughable. I know Rhythm Heaven Fever would've been a bad game if it had motion controls and I'm glad those devs had the right idea.
@CoolBleach

I wouldn't say PRR failed just by poor campaign management, but I'd also like to point out how the year was 2017, and rhythm games were at a really low point in this period of time. And also since it was in 2017, this year was right after the "failures" of many spiritual successor Kickstarters (mighty no. 9 being most notable), and at this point most people had lost faith in funding campaigns like these.

I'll be forever grateful to PewDiePie for playing the first Parappa on his channel. I'd never heard of these games before that, and honestly, that changed everything for me. I bought a damn PSP just so I could play the game myself. A little later down the line I got a hold of Parappa 2 on PS2 and played the absolute shit out of that. Years later I bought both of these again on PS4 and again played and played and played until I heard the songs in my sleep. Parappa the Rapper 2 must be my favorite in the series, I've sure put the most hours into it, but I greatly love the first one too, it's just so iconic.

Making a Parappa/Um Jammer Lammy game is not easy, i think MMMM shows exactly how difficult creating the cartoony world and scenarios that Parappa has. Also nobody thinks about how difficult making music is, it's nearly impossible to create a consistently loved album long music set list, much less making it freestyle friendly. I would love another game but it's easy to forget how much work went into the 3 existing games.

Me personally, I'd love to see a sequel to parappa the rapper, or a remaster to PTR2 for a 30 year anniversary that includes online 2 player modes, and that would be compatible for Xbox, PlayStation, PC and mobile.

What hit me at the end that's even sadder about MMMM (lol) is that I probably wouldn't even have clicked on this if it didn't have Parappa in the title. Not to say I didn't enjoy the MMMM review, very interesting story, specially liked the commentary at 5:58 anyway nice video man much love

I think you're likely remembering Scratchin' Melodii. It's a cool project and seems to still be in development going by their website. For this video I wanted to keep it to games that original creators of PaRappa had involvement with is all, otherwise I'd have mentioned stuff like Friday Night Funkin' (which is also neat).
