out of the new Sega Genesis Classics Collection, the Steam version is the best way to go for it. it was released on Steam Years ago and included Sonic 3& Knuckles, the Ecco series, and Eternal Champions. It also has support for mods in the games, for more interesting options

Really appreciate your videos. I'd even put you shoulder to shoulder with the guys at Digital Foundry. Seriously guys, as a video editor and overall quality freak myself, I cannot thank you enough for all the efforts. Also, it would be great to have a video about how to get the best picture from the original Xbox. It was an amazing machine with some really forward thinking features that came in a very interesting time (the beginning of consumer available progressive-scan enabled TVs and proto HD [720p] ).

I like the Steam version of this because it has rom hack support through Steam workshop. I've got Sonic 3 Complete and multiple Streets of Rage hacks that I'm technically playing officially. Also there's a handful of games for it only on Steam.

Makes you wonder why Sega even bothers to get anyone other than M2 to do their compilations.

I have a few questions and thoughts. Regarding the Sega Genesis Collection for the PS2, I believe the aspect ratio can be scaled properly by condensing horizontally and stretching vertically to max on both in-game video settings. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.) Not perfect, but better and removes most flickering. The Sonic Mega Collection that preceded on the PS2 generally has better emulation, except for the very first Sonic the Hedgehog, which has highly distracting sound lag. Regarding the borders on the Sonic Ultimate Genesis Collection and the M2 Vintage Collection: have you tried setting the console system settings to 4:3 before starting the game? I believe that may remove the borders. A tangent, but I've been experimenting with cheap and easy (but good quality) ways to play old consoles on HD televisions, with some success. Is there a place here to discuss this?

The Steam versions of all of these games are fantastic as well, it was actually the basis for the PS4 and Xbox One compilation. The one on Steam however has even more options than any other compilation(however, it is JUST Genesis games and added features) and even more games.

Most other youtubers don’t dig this deep. I appreciate the attention to detail.

This video also makes me feel better about only playing these games on original hardware 😉. 16-bit games in HD on your modern flatscreen can't compete with RGB scart on a CRT!

Fun fact: There was a Mega Drive cartridge published which contained both Sonic 1, Sonic 2, and Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine. So there was a Mega Drive compilation, on the Mega Drive! In fact, there were quite a few similar games, e.g. I own a legit Mega Drive cart of 6 Mega Drive games! Must’ve been some big cartridges...

Honestly the only better thing than this compilation are the individual sega ages games. But thats because they are also recoding them for the most part.

I honestly can't believe Sega would allow the Smash Pack for the Dreamcast to be released with the noise/sound like that. Whoever was in charge of that release really just didn't give a shit apparently.

your clip just after 22:06 perfectly encapsulates the forced border problem, as that platform pops in from what your peripheral vision told you was clear... and i LOVE the 3DS ports! they're some of my most played games on my main 3DS, the three japanese cartridges make me want a japanese 3DS just for them. we only got the first here in the UK as well. Yeah the Smash Pack on Dreamcast is one of the most disappointing compilations of all time, Genesis or otherwise. The irony is you can play homebrew emulators on Dreamcast easily that are WAY better.

You could cited The remaster's of The Sonic Séries classics on Android by The Guy responsible for Sonic Mania this is The absolutely best way to play Sonic 1, 2 and CD and still blows my mind why Sega didn't Port then to consoles

Sega was smart to give you guys a review copy. Not going to lie I'd be way more likely to buy one of these classic collections if it was MLiG approved.

I have a PC collection from the 90s called Sega Smash Pack. It came with: Altered Beast Columns Golden Axe OutRun Phantasy Star II Revenge of Shinobi Sonic Spinball Vectorman The emulation was decent for the most part, but the real oddity was Revenge of Shinobi was actually marketed as Super Shinobi. Furthermore, it was the beta of the game! So the music was wrong, you could instantly turn on invincibility, and the last boss would take you back to the beginning of the game. I know some people complain about the quality of the emulation in some collections, but nothign is as bad as that IMO. I'll probably pick up this collection eventually. Im a bit mad theres no Sonic 3 and S&K, and its very puzzling if its really because of music licensing issues. IMO the collection is very solid. It freakin' has WonderBoy in Monster World. Thats my favorite Genesis game next to PSIV.

It terms of compilations of sega genesis game's I only own the ones released for the playstation 2 and 3 and also the playstation 4 as well I'm most nostalgic for the playstation 2 version witch is how I discovered this consoles amazing library of game's in fact as I'm currently typing out this comment I'm actually playing the sega genesis collection for the playstation 2 I get very nostalgic memory's watching the intro sequence that showcases all of the games available in this collection I also love the main menu theme that plays when you're choosing what game that you want to play what also makes this collection worthwhile Is the addition of tips for each of the games as well as viewing there box artwork and also trivia and a detailed description of each of the games respective plotlines It also contains extras a plenty and interviews as well in my opinion it is definitely an excellent collection of segas titles that where relased on the genesis and getting to play them on the playstation 2 is definitely a very uquinqe and enjoyable experience and will give major nostalgic memory's to those that original grew up with these games when they were originaly relased on the console itself

All I really need to know about these collections is--where the Tyris Flare at? Or where the Nei at? Or where the Rika/Fal at? I think you get the idea. Excellent as always, and thorough as all hell, but what I learned here that really hit me was that Sega owns the Technosoft IPs...what a damned waste indeed, so many excellent games and properties they're doing absolutely nothing with, getting nowhere, fast. I remember being so excited for that Dreamcast Smash Pack disc, as it was one of my earliest ebay purchases...then I played it, and I think with the exception of Virtua Cop 2, my ears bled for days...and VC2 may have been the only "pass" in the disc since it could have just been a direct localization of the standalone port released in Japan.

I really feel you on the borders. It's becoming a trend now to fill that space with anything imaginable. Not just in video games, but with TV and movies. It's just an unnecessary distraction that makes it harder to focus on the actual content you're playing or watching.

I do want to correct a minor mistake regarding the Sonic Mega Collection Plus, the Xbox and Ps2 versions are actually 525p,not 480p and the Gamecube version is 480i. The bit higher resolution is actually why I re-bought it for Ps2.

I just got Monster Boy on PS3 recently. Why? Because I love Monster World IV! That’s my favourite Sega Genesis/Mega Drive game of all time! I like how Sega (also one of my favourite companies, I’ve been asking for Valkyria Chronicles 2 and 3 Remastered as well as Skies of Arcadia Remastered on PS4 and Switch as well as Steam. I accept them for who they are now, but let us not forget their hardware history, I love Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast, in my opinion, that was Sega’s best offerings for their hardware, don’t expect any new consoles from them but miniature classic consoles) is bringing back their history from generation to generation. We could’ve had a Sonic compilation on PS1 but Sega never did PS1 (I hope Sega regretted their insulting advertisement campaigns as they moved on to software working with their former rivals to this day), they did PS2, onwards. You need to update this once the Genesis/Mega Drive Mini comes out. I wanna see a comparison of that too, from the original Genesis all the way up to Sega Ages on Switch and the Genesis Mini. I really want a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Mini. (Love the Japanese box art and logo!) You should do a comparison with the TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine with its new miniature version once it comes out! (Favourite game of all time for TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine is Ys I and II) What else I like about it is import not necessary unless there’s a particular model you want (I do like what Europe and Japan have but sticking to the US version simply because).

I was expecting a bigger step up from the PS3/360 collection.

Here's an extra bit of info regarding Sonic Mega Collection since I've tinkered with all three versions: The Xbox version is backwards compatible on Xbox 360 and the GameCube version can be forced to display in 480p or 240p using Swiss. The GameCube version in 480p is super sharp, sharper than the PS2 version and I think a little sharper than the Xbox version on 360. It's probably about as good as the virtual console releases on Wii. Also, the GameCube version in 480p is one of the best ways to play Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

That music stuttering in Phantasy Star... if your set on doing it 100% legally, just buy it on PC, extract the roms, then use KEGA Fusion or Retroarch. Everyone should pretty much own a laptop or PC with HDMI out now, so you can still play them on your TV if you just must do that.

Just an FYI, on the XBone version, I selected stretched full screen mode and then manually set my TV to 4:3, but I still get tons of vertical shimmering on Phantasy Star IV.

The phantasy star 1 game on the GBA collection has an issue with corrupting saves when saving during certain parts of the soundtrack.

The sound problems with the Phantasy Star games on XBO/PS4 got more prominent the longer you played. I found myself having to reset the console every couple of hours. I assume this probably holds true of other games too, but I didn't find myself playing them that long in one session.

20:14 The PAL version only supports 576i. Through devices like the Framemeister and Generic SCART to HDMI scaler, the deinterlacing looks awful. It's especially noticeable when the "Sonic collected an emerald" screen comes up - the emerald is just a static mess of combing artifacts. The OSSC is a neat workaround for this game. On NORNAL interlaced content, I generally HATE bob-deinterlacing. But with 288p content that was converted to 576i, linedoubling does a good job restoring the integrity of the image.

Would love to see some more videos like this looking at various company's retro collections. Midway and Taito have done a fair few for example. Would be neat to look at how they hold up against the originals.

Unfortunately I really enjoyed the Ultimate Sonic Sega collection on the PS3 Xbox 360 more. I like the fact it had all the Phantasy Stars on it!! I feel like the new collection may of had a bit more lag on it too which is weird. Maybe it's just my setup.

I was excited for this new release, almost exclusively because of the online play. But I’ve quickly been somewhat disappointed by the emulation quality. As Coury says in the video, there are quite a few audio problems and that is such a big problem for me.

What a pity SEGA never bothered to localize the re-made Japanese version of Phantasy Star II. Would have been a nice addition to any of the next-gen compilations.

I picked up Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection on Xbox 360 specifically so I could play Golden Axe Warrior. As far as I know it's the only way to buy a legitimate copy of the game without forking over like 300 bucks. A used copy of the collection complete in case ran me like 20 bucks on eBay. The collection is also available for PS3. Edit: Also if you pick up these games on Steam and run the "simple launcher" you have some pretty good scaling & filtering options available if you're alright with playing in windowed mode.

I think the version of Streets of Rage on the Sega CD compilation is supposed to have more enemy sprites on screen at once too.

I'm most interested in Landstalker, I already pretty much have most of these games on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. I played and really enjoyed Landstalker back in the day, but I never finished it. I'm actually playing Alundra right now, which from what I hear is like a spiritual successor to Landstalker. So I'll be waiting for a very big sale.

This game is on the Switch as well, but has some input delays if pressing buttons too fast. The room where you select the games and change some settings are here but blurry and not as great as the PC and other console versions. If it weren't for the text, I wouldn't know what logo I was looking at.

What about the Steam versions?

The recent release was ported from the pc version of the games.

I got the Classic collection on Switch and I gotta say I've played enough Sonic in my life to feel the input lag in this collection. Sticking with the Ages releases for sure.

Sonic & Knuckles is included on the PS3 version Sega Genesis Collection and in most cases the gameplay is okay. However, when it comes to bonus stages which you have to collect all blue spheres while avoiding red spheres the controller's input lag makes it more frustrating that even I connected the PS3 system to a CRT TV didn't help. They are not as good as the original Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) hardware. That could be one of the reason why Sonic & Knuckles is not included in the Sega Genesis Classics (PS4/XBOX One). I hope they include Sonic & Knuckles as add-ons sometime in the future.

I feel like there should be a moratorium on any more emulated rereleases of Sonic 1 and 2. The Taxman/Stealth ports are superior in every way and should be ported to everything. It’s a crime that only their version of Sonic CD has been released on platforms other than mobile.

When it has a slight several frame sound delay, do you think that could be part of the HDMI medium? Maybe it's the same on an HDMI-modded Genesis. When I first purchased Rocksmith on the PS3, it had a warning saying that there would be a several millisecond delay if I used HDMI audio and it was quite noticeable when playing guitar even to my stereo amplifier. Using the RCA audio out on the PS3 with the HDMI video, the audio delay offset from the video was gone.

The DC Smash Pack also had VC2, which was the best version. 👍
