For sure. Ultra light things are one of the greatest scams ever created. "We have used as little material as possible, and don't include any framing system, so we are going to need to charge you more for that, mmmkay" And ultra lighters eat this shit up. 😂 Car manufacturers need to try this. "Hey guys, we've only put in a 3cyl instead of the usual V6, and also no entertainment system or a/c, and only one door, but it's suuuuper light so we're going to need to charge you double."

There is a reason actually. Zpacks is a cottage company that does not have the resources of a major brand like REI or Eddie Bauer, so their stuff is mire expensive for them to manufacture. Additionally, the fabric known as DCF or cuben fiber is not being produced at mass, and is therefore very expensive to obtain, thus drastically raising the price even more.

@Im_With_Stupid Ай бұрын
DCF's primary benefit is that it's strong enough while being super lightweight. It's upside are that it has good tear strength as long as you pull parallel to the embedded Dyneema strands and it doesn't lose it's tear strength when it gets wet, unlike nylon. It's also very waterproof without needing to be treated and maintains it's as-new HH rating longer than nylon or polyester. It's downsides are that it has rather poor tear resistance when pulled diagonally to the strands (think wind, falling tree branches and tripping over guy wires) and is also prone to permanent deformation. DCF has very low puncture and abrasion resistance and is prone to seepage from micropunctures that are near to impossible to find and repair, all of which makes it a poor choice for floor material. It's also prone to creasing if you pack it too tightly, leave it packed for too long, stuff it or always fold it the same way. At the end of the day, if all you're doing is fairweather thruhiking or weekending and only pitch at established campsites, it's probably fine as long as you're careful with it. On the other hand, if you're beating around off trail and only God knows where or when you might have to pitch, this isn't the kind of tent you want to have to rely on.

a tent that doesn’t come with everything needed to be a tent cannot be considered a tent. you have to carry the poles, that factors into the weight.

Most thru hikers use hiking poles regardless, so it makes sense to use them as your tent poles.

Wrong...My DCF tent is much bigger (1.5P) and only weighs 325g (11.5oz)! It also only cost me £350. But you can't buy them new anymore as the maker has passed a away.

Beautiful work now fo it without halogenated vinyl or halogenated carbon. Without polyester fabrics and plastic manufacture pollution and nylon manufacture pollution. As if you live here.

Adding up all the micro-transactions to pitch the Zpacks Solo Plex in its minimum configuration. 395 grams for the tent 80 grams for the pole 32.4 - 54 grams for 6-10 stakes 507.2 - 529 grams total, or 17.9 - 18.6 oz. Terra Nova Laser Pulse Ultra 1 Minimum Weight 0.45Kg ( 16oz). It's an all-included package of stakes, poles and tent fly. I guess some reviews will label Solo Plex as "world's lightest," when it's a cheap marketing trick.

@@willek1335 - Terra Nova's website claims 490 g (17.284 oz). The Solo Plex, if someone uses a trekking pole, or a stick, or an overhanging branch(according to your numbers) would be 449 g (15.838 oz.). I have no dog in this race. I carry a Tarptent and I dig it.
