Join Bree & Jared as Grandma takes them to Ash Meadows in the Mojave Desert’s Death Valley. We explore the Devils Hole, a hole so deep no bottom has been found with some unexpected features, beautiful Crystal Springs flowing through the desert landscape & a fun look at Jack Longstreet’s life & unique cabin. A rock building built in 1896 with a crafty refrigerator utilizing a natural cold spring. It’s an enjoyable episode that’s bound to be an adventure! :)

Lots of hard work by the community and the BLM (bureau of land management). Devil's Hole and Ash Meadows were almost destroyed in the 70s and 80s. The reason Devils Hole is surrounded by fencing is three men (20somethings?), Jumped in and swam around. Destroying habit and nearly killing off the Pup Fish. It's taken years to bring the population back. Wooden walk ways are to keep the soil from being disturbed. Less breaking down and mudding up the water.

White rocks on roofs, my childhood, Yeah! Seriously, in Las Vegas, just a few hours from Ash Meadows, in the 60s white rocks were put on roofs as a reflective measure to keep the house cooler. Can't tell you for sure if it was really successful. But all the houses in the older parts of town had rock. You can tell the older neighborhoods, because some still have them. As roofs aged and we're replaced the rock was replaced with tiles. But the house I grew up in('65-'82) still is rocked.

That was really cool to see! All we ever hear about is the extreme heat of Death Valley and yet those….I’m gonna call them oases! That water is so clean. I reckon it’s gotta be bc the vegetation around there is unspoilt so it’s still got natural filtration…maybe. Anyway thanks for sharing that little trip. Loved every bit of it.

Lynda Blair The purity/cleanliness and clarity of the water is kind of 3 fold. Yes the foliage, as well as the sand and rock all play a part in filtering the water. The other 2 factors are due to man or the lack of. The area has been claimed as a state park, therefore it is monitored and cleaned so there is little trash and contamination by man. The other part is the lack of manmade contaminants under and above ground on the property or nearby, i.e. not dumps of ANY kind, no types of drilling/extracting, no manmade structures or anything else that could leach contaminants into the soil and into above ground water or below ground at the source.

Yeah little Chip did notice the heat he is closer to the ground. He gets the bounce back. We realized that when the kids were young. We we're walking along though it seemed fine. Then looked at their faces were scarlet. As we bent down we noticed how much hotter it was for them. From then on we had a wagon with padding or stroller with cover. The desert can't be brutal. Blacktop is no help either.

My stepson & his wife took their dog to the beach. He went everywhere with them them. When he jumped out of the car he whined; but, they thought he may have jumped down wrong & strained something. The blacktop burned his feet & they didn't realize it. They had to take him to the vet for tx.

Especially the dog breeds called brachycephalic (squooshy face breeds that have trouble breathing) In Australia there was a sad event when dogs were unloaded from a plane & left on the tarmac for 30 mins on a very hot day, 2 sadly died. We have laws that dogs must have a mat if they are in the back of a utility truck as the metal will burn their feet on a hot day 🙁
