For young’ns the “bing” you hear is the advance frame notification for a slide strip presentation, common in the 50-70s. In junior high, I was the kid at the back of the room turning the slide roll. I was a Leonard Hoffstedter-type chick magnet. ;)

Truly impressive Mopar argument for buying Chrysler. Appreciate educational information like providing figures on United States poplulation and number of luxury car buyers. We are even told, how many buyers are purchasing new versus how many are buying old. As for the cars themselves, the driver side armrest with a cubby is a nice touch. I had no idea, there was such a thing as a car with no interior hood release. Not sure why leave springs are superior to coils, but certainly, a front torsion suspesion is interesting. The styling of both cars depart rapidly. One harks back to ornamentation and sharp creases accompanied by bulges. The other is sleek and simplified. I really like Chyrsler's recessed front and rear bumpers.

Sure is great to watch this and see the differences between these two great old American luxury cars. Imperial salesmen could point out all of the "product advantages" their car featured until they were blue in the face. In 1970 if you owned a Cadillac you'd "made it". Period. End of discussion. The car instantly made that statement just by rolling up to be seen. Like a BMW today; it was all about the image. In comparison, the Imperial kinda' looked like a stretched out Plymouth. No-one on the street ever mistook a Sedan DeVille for an Impala.

If you were a Cadillac buyer, and headroom was a concern of yours, that’s why you didn’t buy the hardtop Calais or sedan Deville, you bought the regular models, or the Fleetwood Brougham. Or, if you could afford it, the Fleetwood series 75 sedan & limousines. Since they were all slightly taller then the hardtop models. and most Cadillac buyers were aware they had different options, but they bought Cadillacs because of the smooth ride that they always hear about, and the looks. They also bought Cadillacs because usually that’s the type of car they buy when they thought of luxury back then. Especially if they were slightly younger than the average Cadillac buyer. And for those who bought Cadillacs for many years, usually would continue to buy them because they served them well.

Were I in the market for an American luxury car in 1970, I would definitely take the Imperial. That’s because Imperial offers a lot more in terms of options and equipment, like the instrument panel, the door storage panels, hidden headlights, seats, stereo, etc. plus Imperial’s interior has a lot more attention to detail in terms of ergonomics and layout.

If I was shopping for a full size sedan in 1970, a well optioned Newport with a 2 barrel 383 would have sufficed. In a GM showroom, I would have looked no further than a Delta 88 with a Rocket 350. I've never ridden in a Cadillac or Imperial but I will say that the Imperial indeed has a lot more room than the Cadillacs and Lincolns of the era and that the Imperial is about 2 inches taller than a Cadillac or Lincoln of the era and that they have far superior handling than the Cadillacs and Lincolns of the era. Yeah the Imperial does not have a great ride for it's size but if you like handling this would be a car of choice. But if you want a superior ride than the Lincoln would be the better choice for ride. If you want somewhere in between get a Cadillac which is the best way I can at least describe even if I myself don't own any of these cars but at least by doing research it really does give you an idea on what you really want in a car.

Unfortunately for Chrysler and Lincoln, as beautiful as they were, they just didn't have that ultimate presence a new Cadillac brought to the table. Even the top line Oldsmobile 98s and Buick Electras were a wiser choice than the top of the line Chrysler or Lincoln product. Of course, some might think, that's just my opinion, however, facts are facts. The Imperial was a good looking car but couldn’t compete against Cadillac and Lincoln because of the ride. The Imperial’s stiffer torsion bar/ leaf spring suspension rode stiff compared to Cadillac and Lincoln’s cushier coil spring suspension and Cadillac and Lincoln’s full perimeter frame chassis rode quieter than Imperial’s unibody because the perimeter frame blocks out a lot of road noise. The Imperial just didn’t have the luxury car ride the Cadillac and Lincoln had and American luxury car buyers expected. Even the less expensive Buick Electra, Olds 98 and Mercury Marquis Brougham rode far better.

Ahhh, but if you ever needed to drive on a rough road, or perhaps make a turn, the Chryslers had superior torsion-bar ride & handling. I was amazed how fast I could fly down a dirt road with a Newport.

@@marko7843 The Imperial may have handled better, but American luxury car buyers during the era wanted a smooth silent ride, luxury was about the ride more so than handling, that’s why the Imperial only sold a fraction of what Cadillac and Lincoln sold with Chrysler discontinuing Imperial. The people that wanted handling during that era would have bought a small block Boss 302 Mustang or small block Z28 Camaro.
@marko7843

@@trucking604 I clarified my post. The Chrysler suspension was better for ride AND handling, not like a car weighing 1000 lb less but making it easier to maneuver those 19 feet with less roll & wallow... Even Lincoln cleaned up their roll & sqat in 1970 compared to their 60's cars.
@trucking604

@@marko7843 I understand what you’re saying, merely stating what the American public wanted in a luxury car in that era. The American public back then didn’t want a firm ride in a luxury car back then, they wanted a cushy ride and a silent ride, Imperial’s ride was different and that didn’t help sales. Today is little different, today’s generation doesn’t mind a firmer (compared to yesteryear) ride. Although I had a BMW 7 series in the early to mid 2000’s, thought it rode OK until I rode in a friend’s Mercedes S class, which rode cushier and quieter. If I had to do it again I would have bought the S class, which to me had a more luxury car ride.

The Cadillac's of the 1960's used to be decent cars. By the 1970's they started going downhill, and by the late 1970's they were a disaster! Doesn't matter anyway because when they go all electric they'll be out of business!

No doubt the Imperial was engineered better. Mopars always had that edge... But Cadillac wins in the looks department. Notice the filmstrip does not mention the drivetrain at all? The 472, Quadrajet, and TH400 were an unstoppable combination that Imperial couldn't touch, and they knew it!

The detuning was already underway in 1970. The 440 was down 15 h.p. vs. 1969. Don’t know about the 472.

The TH400 is a fine transmission to be sure, and "unstoppable" applies to reasonable and some unreasonable uses. I would not say the Chrysler B/RB through the 727 couldn't touch it. I have seen the 727 stand up to use that is beyond reasonable. I DO like the large number of head bolts on the big Chrysler engines. It has always seemed like Cadillac (along with BOP) should have not cheaped-out on head bolts. There is a lot of luxury in 17 head bolts and going through life never blowing a head gasket on the B/RB engines.

The Imperial has hidden headlights but if you've ever heard them close it sounds like a trash truck, also the Cadillac is much more solid and rides smoother.. Imperial could never be a serious threat to Cadillac. Do you see the Imperial nameplate anywhere? They even tried to pass K cars of as Imperials. Nobody did luxury better than GM. Chrysler Imperials weren't even up to par with the Buick Electra 225 Limited. They were big that's all. People bought big Chryslers because they couldn't afford Buicks let alone Cadillacs.
