Very nice video but I think you forgot a Huge and VERY important subject........scammers.....so many scammers on Upwork and Fiverr that will try to get you to contact them outside of the website chat......be careful people, if they don't chat with you through the website chat......do not accept their offers.

Downside: none of these work for serious gigs. If your skills are built in an enterprise/B2B environment, none of these platforms will land you anything worth your time.

Yes, exactly. Cold email and networking have gotten me more (aligned, high-paying) clients than freelance platforms have, but they're good to start out or get some extra cash.

Super helpful! I'm actually a six-fig consultant who's transitioning to a different venture, but want to continue to earn with as little lead gen effort as possible. So exploring freelance exchanges for feasibility. This was a helpful primer Deya I wish I'd seen before the hours invested in Upwork setup; now experimentation. Off to see your piece on Upwork next. Thank you for making such an informative video and putting an entertaining spin on it. I looked at freelancing before and only came across the bottom half of your list with their associated problems. Super happy to find out there are better platforms catering to or allowing for real talent and jobs and not just CS students looking to buy their homework or people who think they can build the next amazon with a single developer paid $10/hr.

Really helpful, Deya. Thank you. I started on Upwork and found them to be quite decent across the board (once I learned to recognise and avoid the overbearing scams). Freelancer, however, I'm not sure I'd put them in the same tier as Upwork, based on personal experience. 15 days wait for first payment to be processed (which turns out to be 18 days) and a KYC process that left me feeling I was applying for a Swiss bank account. Seriously over the top.

I think the best is to leave these platforms as fast as possible. Get experience, then get out. They all have toxic pricing cycles. They are a great way to build a portfolio though once you get it going.

Back in 2020(desperate times😅), I made it to a video interview round with toptal and they offered me a course to do for people that were "seriously considered but just barely made the cut", kind of like a waiting list and I just put them on my waiting list as well so, yeah. Anyways I'm on upwork and I love it there, will try out some of the other options mentioned here though, to diversify myself just a bit. Thanks Deya.
