In this episode I provide the history of the Chrysler LeBaron, from its early days as a coachbuilder in the 1920's, it became its own model line in 1977, and in 5 overlapping generations Chrysler produced sedans, coupes, wagons, and convertibles, the latter possibly being the most famous, especially the original K car variant.

It’s amazing that at 40yo, I’ve seen or experienced every old scene through this video - from John Candy in ‘Planes, Trains, & Automobiles’ to the electronic toys I had that spoke to the T&C stationwagon. My favorite uncle passed a few months ago and speaking at his memorial, I recalled my memories of riding in the jump seat of his T&C stationwagon as a youngster, and his specific influence on my love for automobiles. Ironically, right before he died, we talked about that stationwagon and he said it was the worst car he ever owned because he loved it, but lived in the repair shop. 😂 Thanks for the enjoyable nostalgia! 🔥

My dad bought my mom a 1982 LeBaron convertible, white with maroon vinyl interior and digital radio, as her birthday present in early 1983. I came along nine months later, so I guess she liked it. We were an all-Chrysler family until the turn of the century, actually. My dad had a 1986 LeBaron GTS turbo, which he replaced with a Plymouth Acclaim in 1991. Mom upgraded to an Eagle Vision in 1994 and then a purple Sebring JX convertible after we moved to Florida in 1997. Sadly, the quality issues they had with the Sebring and my dad's 1996 Grand Caravan ES put them off of Chrysler altogether. Their next vehicles were a 1999 Volvo C70 convertible and a 2003 Honda Odyssey, respectively. But that original 1982 LeBaron stayed around and became my first car after I got my license in 1999!

My first ever car purchase was a 1991 Le Baron convertible. Dark Quartz color with grey interior, base model. I worked for a company that made parts for the AA body (4 door Spirit, Acclaim, & Le Baron). My car was made in St. Louis, but I was at the Newark assembly plant when the 1991 Model year kicked off, they had just wrapped up the test builds of the Coupe and Convertible at the factory. I also got to see the AA Chrysler Saratoga being built for export. The Top was down more from September to May than it ever was during the summer. (You can heat a convertible to a tolerable level in the cooler months, but the AC could not keep it cool in the summer with the top down. South Carolina summers are HOT)

The body is a rust magnet. I had my White 89 GTC Turbo II manual conv. for 9 years. The only thing that took it off of the road was a Chevrolet Avalanche to the fender. It did have problems over the years. Each issue was fixed with hand tools. Proper maintenance kept the engine's internals nice and shiny upon disassembly. Now, don't get me wrong, Chrysler is garbage. But the late 80's turbo models have a whiff of Underdog Hotrod that I like. That's why I bought a second one. A Red 89 Premium Turbo. Already swapped the previous car's intercooler, safely bumped the boost to 12 psi. The power to weight is adequate until my big turbo/fuel system/sensor upgrade. I wouldn't shy away from these. You'll always learn something new with them.

These K-LeBarons were actually really nice... compared to many contemporary cars. They had great sounding radios/cassette-decks, very comfortable, and probably one of the best-handling vehicles I've ever driven in snow/ice. I had a used 84 or 86 2-door with that plush-ass, half-reaching vinyl top which I always kept Armor-all-ed. After driving a Chevy Citation, this thing was like a Rolls Royce. Aluminum heads were finished by about 100,000 though. It was actually very reliable, had the O2 sensor replaced a couple of times, that was it.

Only yesterday I was thinking about the first gen 96' Dodge Neon my friend had and how I hadn't seen many recently and how all the people who got them in the mid 2000's were young dudes who put body kits on them with unfinished primer on the kits. Then yesterday evening I see a 2nd gen red one that had a bad rattle can paint job, but at least not all modded out. Then a few hours later another 2nd gen with crappy black paint job and the wrong wheels. The red one was on someone's front lawn, looked like it had been sitting a while, dusty. With a few other project cars on the driveway. Obviously the lowest priority vehicle they had. The black one was at a fast food restaurant, so it was was still roadworthy. I always thought the new Dodge Dart was supposed to be the new Neon. I liked it's looks, but they canceled it a few years back. A work colleague had gotten that Dart brand new in white and drove it everywhere across the west to see every national park within driving distance over the next few years. Plus a ton of other road trips, seemed to have served him well I believe he still has it.

I agree. My parents bought a brand new 1984 Cimarron with all of the options. It gave my parents and family 355,000 miles of decent reliability, performance and economy. It was a simple frayed and worn "throttle valve cable" that ruined the transmission. My brother was driving it at that time and had that cable been replaced immediately when the gas pedal got mushy feeling, it would still be operating today. I feel it's a much better car than folks stereotype it to be.

He traded in an old KP61 Toyota Starlet, itself an interesting vehicle, one wheel drive ( hilarious to drive in northeast winters btw), so you can imagine the excitement when he brought the SHO home. Also maybe one on the original Plymouth Voyager, my mother traded in an old 1977 Pontiac Bonneville for an extended wheel base Voyager in 1989 once the Pontiac's transmission started to go out. Not as much fun as the Taurus but still a nostalgic car. Cheers!

Great videos! Wow, what a throwback to my younger days. We had so many of these cars in my house growing up! I had a 97 Talon TSi AWD, followed by a Eldorado ETC of the same year. I would love to see a video on either! Cheers!

I was raised with my dad's 1978 LeBaron Town and Country that never ran. Has a 318. They should really bring back the nameplate on one of the Peugeot platforms now that Stellantis exists.

I got a weird one, Kia Sephia. Maybe a future one could be when Kia Came to The United States in the late 90s.

Thanks for this video. I suggest exploring the Imperial marque (1955-1975) that you reference here, including the flagship Imperial LeBaron, and also another longtime Chrysler nameplate, the New Yorker.

First car I ever had was a 79 LeBaron. Parents gave it to me in late 95. It was literally a POS. Sometimes it started sometimes it didn’t. 4 door plushy seats. I had to take the bus to HS because I never knew if it would start at school 😂

My Dad inherited a Dodge 600 from his sister, I tried to buy it from him, but he wouldn't sell it to me. Looking at this video reminded me that it was probably for the best!

The LeBaron was quite literally the S Class in Mexico, I have an uncle that was a millionaire winemaker. He drove a black LeBaron and I remember thinking how incredibly luxurious and elegant the car was. It was truly amazing to see it parked next to the VW Beetles that crowded Mexican streets back then.

I had a 1995 Chrysler Saratoga from 2011 until 2017. Saratoga was the name under which the LeBaron Sedan was sold in some European Counties. It was on of the most reliable cats I ever had.

I had the 89 hardtop as my first car. Wasn't bad but no power. It was also fun to floor it and watch the electronic speedometer go crazy until you settled down to a steady speed.

How about the dodge/Plymouth colt? My dad had one when I was a kid. He got it when I was in kindergarten, and I learned to drive stick on it when I was 16. By the time it was done when I was 19 (someone rear ended my dad doing about $150 of damage totaling the car), the clutch was optional. The (lack of) options were crazy. No AC, given on a $7000 car. But then no tach, no clock, no radio. If you wanted the door to stay locked when you shut it, you had to hold the handle when you closed the door. Otherwise had to lock it with the key. Still a lot of good memories!

That 2 door model with the hideaway headlights was beautiful. I don't know how reputable, but they were the nicest of the lineup. The convertible was also one of the nicest for any brand. Once again, I'm unsure about the reliability.

We had a Lebaron convertible, the one with the hideaway headlights. Think it was an 89 or 1990. Great looking car. The V6 engine was terrible… exhaust smoked terribly and I was told it was valve lifter guides and was gonna cost $$$ to fix. I was forever dumping gooey oil thickeners in the crankcase to tighten things up. The wife drove it most f the time and didn’t get as upset with the smoke. She traded it in for a Grand Cherokee about '96 or so. I do recall the automatic top was flawless. I’d had two converts before that, a Corvair and a Camaro, both with manual tops, so the motorized top on the Lebaron was a real luxury😊
