As a qualified sheetmetal worker in fine limit work for 50 years ,you do not sharpen a drill like that .It is at the wrong angle you should twist to get a slight smooth downward curve. The way It is being shown it will not drill a perfectly round hole will chatter . The drills that you buy in all of the D.I Y stores are not sharpened correctly. I always have to resharpen them to do the job properly before using. There is also a correct way to sharpen drills properly for counter sinking holes for screws. That is different from normal drilling. I wish you all the best.

Thanks for showing. I only use my gut. and managed perfectly well over last 4 decades. I always cool bit with water, left side and then sharpen RH side and cool off with water immediately. For small drills need glasses lately. To test drill bit for sharpness; turn with RH in LH finger; if it bites, its always good. Thanks for your professional attention to detail. Never in my life have seen such a loose workshop. If you can call it that? A post drill on a wobbly table. A handheld drill vice and even a wobbly elasticated wanna be drill bit sharpener that is going to hurt this guy bad one day along with everything else he uses in that room. no relief behind the cutting edge Oh no cutting edge that’s why just flat ground to a sharp right angle No wonder it had a hard time burning through that wood A pilot hole would have helped. Maybe He got swarf yet it was burnt. Just hope he learns how to bolt things down and read some basic tool use books or videos before he starts losing fingers.

Too much clearance angle gives a weaker chisel point. And as demonstrated a tendency to grab. A jobber drill shouldn't be sharpened flat but have a slight curve on the clearance which strengthens the chisel point.

A desktop model like my first one cost about 350 us dollars (3018 from china) . 300mm x !80mm or 12inx 8in It is big enough to do small signs and rigid enough to do aluminum and brass and mild steel. The point being is CNC is doable, But it will take the time to learn. Only after learning would you buy a bigger machine . My big machine does 24x36in 3hp spindle(power) cost 2k that was an investment.. But I can do a lot that I could not do before. I did like your video so keep that up either way. It is only food for thought as I enjoy doing hand work every bit as much s design and CNC.@@CodyKlimaszewski

Would advise a MUCH slower drill speed for steel and use OIL or coolant ... also make a small pilot hole before using bigger drill ( fast speeds are best for stuff like wood or plastics / Tufnol™ / fiberglass ) and NEVER drill brass with these sharp drills , back off the cutting edge or things go flying around the workshop ( these tips should mean you use your great little jig less often ! ! ) ....

To make a fixture worthwhile you want it to make the cutting edges the same length so the drill cuts to size. With this it's down to judgement just like when you hand grind. However it does go some way to making the grinding angle consistent. I could see it making a groove in the grinding wheel necessitating dressing the wheel.
@rixogtr

For me it's quicker to have a drill bit angle gauge ready at hand. Mostly when I grind my bits I have the gauge and a couple of bits of various sizes and just do incremental grinds and always recheck my angles and that's it, no need for a holder for each size drill bit

Very Nice! How many scrap drops of 3/8 flat stock do you have? :) That looks like a very good system for sharping larger bits. I'm looking for a jig to sharpen smaller bits, 3/32" to 1/4". Very impressive how accurate and clean you're jig works. I'm thinking similar jig V-cut that rides on the tool rest. Needs to be quick for a quick touch up. Split point would be nice.
