A car that’s working well should start on the second to third crank so pretty much instant if it dosnt and it’s a long crank something is up. It should start instantly if the vehicle got good fuel pressure and good spark plugs

You're an angel for sharing so much knowledge! Being a woman who would not bother to learn about cars (if it were not for KZfaq), then I would have to go to books and learn before taking my car to the mechanic. I can actually try a few of these diagnostics myself and take the rest to the mechanic for the fuel pressure test. Thank you!

I know this video is old....but it was relevant to me today!!!! car started fine this morning, drove to walmart ( started fine again), drove to Autozone and then had a long crank start...then car was a little sluggish to accelerate....when home, started the car a few times and still had a long crank ( 2.5 seconds) ...so, I looked online and found this video!! did the "TURN KEY 3 Times" and it worked!!! car started normally ( 1.3 seconds)... Anyways, I am replacing the fuel filter as mine has a little over 60K miles on it!!!! lol SO THANK YOU :)

My Crown Vic had sat for over a month. When I went to start it it cranked strongly but would not start. I suspected a fuel delivery problem and came upon this video with the repeated 10 second RUN trick. It did not work. However the next day I charged the battery which was running down from repeated start attempted and increased the wait interval to 30 seconds as recommended on a web site. Suddenly I heard the fuel pump "prime" so I went to START and it started. Thanks for the tip.

@TheOldNeighborhood
@TheOldNeighborhood Жыл бұрын
@@TheTruelakersfan Right, not a fix but it got me started so I could drive it to my mechanic and avoid a tow. Another "trick" to get it started with a bad fuel pump is to gently pound on the tank with something soft like your fist or a rubber mallet with the ignition on. I used that one on my other Crown Vic to get it started so I could drive it to the mechanic and avoid a tow just 2 weeks ago. With a Crown Vic you can just try pounding inside the trunk. Again , it worked for me however I would NOT try this method if there is any odor of gasoline.

It worked! OMG it actually worked! I have an older 88 honda civic and frankly, i barely drive it, atleast not long miles. But i've been having this problem off & on for about 6 years (would probably be 2 years in normal use, years)? But my car almost always starts when the engine is cold. But drive for 15 Ms & turn it off, and then try & start it again in less than 15Ms and it won't start. Now usually, if i waited 5 or 10ms, it will finally start. (Sometimes i would roll it back & forth one time & that worked). In fact, only once, until last week, had it just not started & it had to be left overnight somewhere, but when i returned to it the next morning, sure enuf, it started with no problem. Alas, last week it wouldn't even start from cold (but atleast i was home in my garage) and even after trying my self-starting battery charger (since it had sat for 4 days) that didn't work either. I finally called AAA after 2 days & they tried that and nada. So i asked if he could check for starter or alternator issues, and he told me that the car has to actually be RUNNING to check those. So, i waited 2.5 more days and went out when the outdoor temp got down to 55 (3am) and tried your trick and sure enuf, it cranked over like no problem. I then had to drive it for half an hour (pretty scary for a female) to build the battery back up, jic, but it DID - start! Now i have to get it started during the day, as the weather heats up (not helpful), so i can drive it to a shop to look at it, but again, with your trick, maybe or atleast i now have hope, that it will start when i can go get some help, so THANK YOU!!!!!

That MAF test can be gold if you don't have live data. Shoot, it can be helpful even if it isn't. Now if it makes it run better, you've found the issue, but if theres is no change, it's not a guarantee it's good. Thanks for the reminder of a thumbs up at the end! :)

Great video. My low mileage, 22 year old old truck always takes about 8 cranks to start, and it just doesn't sound right. The only time it starts in one or two cranks, is if it's been on a battery charger up until I start it. The battery is fairly new, with good voltage. So I'm guessing the extra charge in the battery helps an old, worn out part, to get enough juice to work the way it should. The coil, rotor and cap, alternator, fuel pump and filter, plugs and wires are all new. So I'm thinking distributor. It's always started a bit funky, since when I got it, the in tank fuel pump was shot. It was a school district truck, that laid around for many years, so I replaced many parts.

Hello! Stumbled across this video while looking for ways to diagnose a hard start condition on my 99 Nissan Maxima. Several months back the built-in factory immobilizer security system stopped recognizing my key chip causing the car not to start at all. Long story short-- the dealership wanted to replace the immobilizer AND my ECU to the tune of $2200, so I found a locksmith familiar with this problem who reprogrammed my ECU and/ or the immobilizer (not sure exactly what he did there) and reprogrammed my key chip for WAAAY cheaper. The car has always started since then, BUT now it usually cranks several times before starting, and not only that it actually seems to cut out completely sometimes while cranking and then come back. Also sometimes the engine sort of "bangs" into a start. I replaced the starter itself a few months back to see if that would help, and upon the first several startups after that it fired right up with no hesitation at all, but it has gotten worse again over time to where it now has the same problem of cranking several times and/or cutting out before starting. Any idea what this could be? This car uses coil-on-plugs so I'm wondering if I burned out a coil pack trying to start it so many times? Thanks in advance & love your videos!

I'm pretty sure the issue on my moms car is the spark plugs. 97 Honda Accord. Had to replace the seals under the valve cover and rings under the rocker arm assembly. That took care of the oil POURING into the tubes. Now it takes a few times to crank it. If this doesn't fix it, I will order a new fuel filter after a pressure check. Thanks dude.

UPDATE. Changing the spark plugs did not help. The car runs better, but the start-up issue didnt change. Starts up just fine after the initial startup. If left sitting for a while, it become difficult to start again. I'm no expert mechanic but every time this has happened to one of my cars its always been a fuel pump/filter/regulator (almost all newer vehicles have it all in one unit in the tank) and cycling the key on and off is the way to find out that's it. In my limited experience usually the other things may cause delayed starting but also result in a poor running engine as well

You forgot the "E" Coolant Temperature Sensor - It could be malfunctioning and telling fuel injection that the car is cold when its really hot, and flooding the engine on warm starts. You have to make sure you diagnose the ECT Sensor that controls the fuel injection, and not the ECT Sensor that operates the gauge.

Longer crank time(4 or 5 seconds) and right before starting it hesitates and 'roughly' starts. I had plugs/wires/cap replaced a year ago. As well as fuel filter, TPS, and most of vacuum lines. PCV/air filter/battery are good. I cleaned throttle body. Your first test 'Key on test' does not help. (when I remove gas cap I have quite a bit of pressure released/sucked...that pressure will release on it's own almost completely overnight). I replaced one cylinder head/gasket and checked pressure a year ago. 180-179 on 5 cylinders, one had 150 as I recall(on the head I didn't replace). No water in oil, I do loose coolant very slowly(a cup a month maybe). 1995(3.0vze) 4runner.

I smell a bit of fuel after turning the Tacoma off. It doesn't seem to be a leaking from the filter, which I recently replaced, so maybe now I will look at the injector seals. It does seem like a vacuum leak in the fuel line. After that, and a pressure test, I may look at the fuel pump. Anyway, always good to check the air filter too. Thanks for the tips!

I just bought a used 2008 nissan xterra, 2 wheel drive. Ive only had it a week, and immediatelly it sometimes difficult starting it makes sounds trying to start but takes 5 - 10 seconds sometimes to finally fully turn on and engine run. But usually if its been running and only recentlly turned off , if i start it soon after it seems to usually start right up. I may be misremembering, but it seems to have more difficulty starting fully if its been turned off for a few hours or overnight. Guy who sold it to me said nothing about it, but i dont trust him at this point, as no way it literally just started happening the day i bought it from him. I had battery tested and its good, only a year and a half old. And i noticed a slight fuel smell today inside the xterra while driving it. Unfortunately i was told by oreillys auto parts when i asked about getting a new fuel filter that this model xterra doesnt have just a simple fuel filter that is easy to access and remove and replace alone, as its instead supposely inside the friggin fuel tank and has to remove the friggin fuel tank and replace whole fuel assembly and buy and whole new fuel assembly to replace fuel filter. Which is nearly $400 for just the part! What batshoot craxy dumb design instead of jjust having fuel filter outside fuel tank easy to access and replace like some vehicles.. And this xterra has a built in alarm system connected to a chip in the key, apparently. When locking and leaving vehicle apparently after getting a certain distance from vehicle thealarm automatically arms. Suddenly today when i drove to auto store and turned engine off and removed key, immediatley as i opened door to exit the vehicle the alarm suddenly went on making alarm noises for a minute. Had no idea how to turn it off or why it suddenly started alarming as i was still in vehicle with the key in my hand. It at least stopped alarming sound after a minute. Just concerned as it shouldnt do that and have no idea why it did or if its going to again and how to stop it.

Two more things is bad pressure regulator not holding pressure. On cars with a fuel return it is in the engine compartment on the fuel rail, on cars with non return fuel system it will be part of the fuel pump assembly. The second thing is a possible fuel injector that is leaking. You can do a search to see how to diagnose these problems. I still would like to say that this is a great video because it included the sensors also, Thanks for the great info and work you put into the videos.

you forgot a big one i see every once in awhile and that would be the coolant temp sensor which tells the computer when the engine is warm and to not give as much fuel. if the temp sensor reads warm when the engine is cool it will cause a hard to start or no start.

That was the problem i had. Coolant switch sensor. My mechanic told me to change that and now my car starts just fine.
@chiil034
@chiil034 4 жыл бұрын
Usually the coolant temp sensor doesn't come into play until the car is warm (coolant above 80 F for example). Suppose a faulty coolant temp sensor that reads a bad temp that's too high on a cold engine could cause cold start issues, but run OK when warm.

2002 ford explorer: I had the same problem. And once it started it would start all day, next time it sat for ant length of time I'd have a hard start again. First started with replacing the battery, not it! Next was the Fuel filter, Again not it! Replaced the plugs and wires, Not it! Turned it over to my neighbor that had testing stuff. fuel line tested fine ever though it sounded like it was starving for fuel. Fuel pump was ruled out at that point. Longer story short it ended up being the engine coolant temp sensor wiring pigtail was loose. with the test unit in place it would show that it wasn't read it correctly. Tightened up that connection and it starts every time now. We found this same problem over and over on the internet but never saw the fix. Hopefully this helps and maybe your is this simple!!

As a get by until you can get it to the man ,instead of cranking the crap out of it witch on some fords they will not start if you do an extended crank just bump the starter for 5 seconds each time it will start usually in 2-5 times but if you cycle the key all the way off each time it will erase the code for the key fob usually on the 4th time on a ford.

I have an 99 f150 4.6 It cranks up with no problem when the engine is cold. But when hot it has about 4-6 second crank. I've noticed it will star up with a hot engine if I cycle the key a few times. I'll try the plugs and wires next because I've already replaced fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, ignition switch, crank shaft position sensor, cam shaft sensor.

Ryan S for modern cars, it should be. If you have an older car that is older than 2010, the fuel filter could be separated from the pump, like my 2007 Ford Taurus for example

hey Mr R and W. I like your videos. I've watched a bunch. I recently replaced the fuel filter on my 1997 Toyota 4 runner 3vzfe ( 2.7 4 cyl ) motor. it was hard to do. Its located under the intake manifold. Gotta take off drivers side wheel to get to bracket with 24 inch extension. Finally got it done. Now have warm hard start condition. Cold start ok. I think the new ( OEM ) fuel filter either doesn't have a check valve or needs one or ?? cycling key twice does nothing to change this. MAF and Throttle body clean. IAC clean. New platinum denso dual electrode plugs. Clean Air filter . motor runs fantastic with lots torque and runs even on all cylinders. Just hard warm start condition after recent fuel filter change. Thanks !

I have a 2009 Hyundai Accent with this issue. Seems to only happen when it's cold out. Trying to avoid making an appt with the mechanic (AAA) b/c it's like $120 just for the "diagnostic", which doesn't really work unless the Check Engine Light is on (it's not) and they can pull a code. Does anyone know of issues with this car? The dealership had no clue, either, when I called them....said they'd have to "run a diagnostic"and charge me $140.

Fantastic video. My wifes Nissan versa started doing this a few days go. ( these have in sump pump/ filter/ regulator combos. Car cranks cranks cranks cranks and then starts. Checked the battery and thats fine too. I did the key on/ wait / off x3 procedure you showed and it seems to indicate that the fuel pressure is too low. When I do this procedure the car starts up as normal. Nissan Datascan doesnt appear to have a fuel pressure reading for this car, so and I dont want to T into a fuel line to get reading from my fuel gauge, ( doesnt match any port anyway). My question is why would the car have low fuel pressure ( or a bad reg) yet when the car runs / highway, there is no hesitation or lean condition occurring?

My car cranks for about 7-8 seconds before it starts. And it only gets worse. I’ve checked literally almost everything. I’ve checked the fuel pressure regulator, spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor, Ignition Coil, ignition pickup coil, ignition control module, ignition wires, throttle position sensor, map sensor, iac valve, Intake Air Temp Sensor, Compression, Coolant temp sensor, fuel filter, fuel pump, and battery. Still cranks for a long time. My only two other things to check is the fuel injectors and starter to see if it’s drawing too many amps leaving everything else short on juice. My car is a 1991 Corvette. Non-MAF sensor. It runs great and all but it takes an Ewigkeit to start

A bad fuel pressure regulator also causes hard starting. It lets the fuel pressure bleed back to the tank, when it is bad.

(3vze 3.0) 2nd gen 4runner I don't have a Mass Air Flow Sensor, instead 'Air Flow Meter'.. if that matters. Also my fuel does not turn on until I turn key to 'start'. But I can jumper fuel circuit to run pump... If I try to start truck it takes 2-3 cranks and first 1-2 cranks sputter, are rough, and sound like something is seriously wrong...even a 'thud' of metal sound. Then it will start and run okay. If I remove fuel return line and run truck, it spits out a lot of fuel. I can also hear pump turn on. Putting all kinds of import cheap garbage parts on this truck so I can't trust any of them. I can't find parts like new distributor from Denso, so using some $200 'spectra' crap. New: air flow meter Tps plugs and wires fuel damper fuel regulator distributor/cap injectors vacuum lines battery fuel filter(couple years old) Starter is not new, could the solenoid be the whole problem? No codes currently(OBD1)

Not trying to down play you cause you really know your stuff but its always been my experience that a dirty air filter actually helps a cold engine to start because it limits the air flow but immediately causes poor performance sometimes even stalls right off. Remember them small engines that weren't tuned right so it was mandatory proceedure to place hand over back side of carb to manually choke it to get it to fire up .....

Hello good fellow, Hard starting, your over view diagnostics does not talk about the symptoms of the fuel regulator, how would you diagnose it on a Toyota corolla 2000? which should be treated first the filter or the regulator? The symptoms are when ignition ket is on start it cranks motor for 5 round then starts. next in start it has a slight hesitation as if the regulator diaphragm is struggling to open, then it runs smooth afterwards no problem while on the streets or high way. Love your classes very informative for a DIY .
You won't believe what's causing this No start!
