This video lesson provides a detailed explanation of vowel sounds. The vowels in English are classified into two main groups namely the pure vowels also called monophthongs and diphthongs. The monophthongs are further sub-classified into short vowels and long vowels. I think there are 25 vowel sounds plus the triphthongs which are 5

Thank you for writing in lace. The 20 Vowel sounds are majorly divided into two categories (Monophthong-12 and Diphthong-8). Apart from the two broad divisions, a third category of vowel sounds that are not so much emphasized in English are the triphthongs otherwise called the triple sound. There are five triphthongs, however, we still say there are 20 vowel sounds based on convention.
