Sidestep: Adventures Into History

7 күн бұрын

In this Adventures Into History video, I’m joined by Joy, her cousin Norma, and Cecil Young as we explore an old abandoned tenant farmer house in rural Talbot County, Georgia. Despite the rain causing some audio issues, we push forward to uncover the stories hidden within these walls.
As we wander through the decaying rooms, you’ll see us examining the artifacts and remnants left behind by its former inhabitants. Towards the end of our exploration, I notice something intriguing - the chimney doesn’t match the house, leading me to believe that this structure was built around an already existing chimney from an even earlier home.
Join us as we delve into the past, piece together the history of this forgotten homestead, and uncover the secrets of the people who once lived here.

I love how you can tell the ages of the wood, bricks, nails, and all that. It really gives perspective to what we're looking at which is pretty neat. Glad these buildings are still standing. If those walls could talk. The stories they would tell! It was nice seeing Joy and Norma again.

I grew up in the 40s and 50s, when my father would tear down old buildings, he would save the nails, cut nails which are square nails and round nails. Cut nails were cut not hammer out or forged.

I agree with Joy - the view through the trees was stunning! Georgia is so beautiful. Joy and Norma climbing that gate made me homesick for my Granddad's farm; I climbed those cattle panel gates multiple times a day when I was growing up. Great adventure today!

They really are a couple cool buildings and a really picturesque spot. I'm still marveling at the height of the ceilings and I wonder if your point at end about it being built around what looks like a 2 story(?) original chimney is why the ceilings managed to be so high in there? The buildings just had a really good feeling to them. And shout out to Norma for letting us come (as you said) and also Mr. Gilson who gave us the inspiration to never let a gate stand in our way! Thanks as always, Robert. Love getting to be a part of this!!

I really love hearing the history, love seeing the old houses and barns. I do wish though, since it is being allowed to rot, would it not be OK to allow you, if you want or need it for the OBF, to gather any that is still good and let you buy it, to preserve it? Just asking.

I love seeing these old houses. I kinda have to agree with you Robert about the house. Parts of it being added on. It makes a lot of sense. My heart skipped a beat when I saw all that beautiful bead board. I feel before this house falls totally to the ground I’d salvage as much bead board as I could. You can’t find them like that ever again. Looks like it’s never even been painted. Beautiful piece of property. Thanks our friend for sharing such an awesome place. ♥️♥️😊👍👍👍🌟

Thank you Norma and Robert for this glimpse into history! I never tire of seeing the remains of what once were friendly, cozy homes for families that loved them. Robert helps us glean every bit of knowledge now possible about the old places. If only the wall remains would tell of the families that had lived within. I was happy to see Cecil and Joy again, although the rain must have subdued Joy just as it did the microphone. But, let’s give our newest co-star more time. Not even the rain and fog can keep fun-loving Joy subdued for long! Can’t wait for the next adventure! Oh! How about an update on Annie, Blue, Cat, and Farm Cat?

This 2 room house was well built. The local mill was their resource for lumber, I can imagine it as a 1st house, later used as a Tenant Farmer's house. It is a shame it has been left to decay, because it had been well maintained until about 20-25 years ago. Moisture in the South and vegetation quickly overtake a structure. Had it been abandoned more than 30 years it would have been gone by now. If it were in the Nevada Desert, it would be fully stable, the outer layers showing age. There are a number of structures in Nevada that could be restored from the 1880's. The key is "keep the roof secure" and it will remain 3 times or more longer. A neat share!
