We uncover the mystery of the Caddo people at Caddo Mounds State Historic Site near Crockett, TX. Who were they and why did they leave behind giant mounds of dirt where they once lived? You could say these were the original Texans before explorers came to the New World.

.... it matters because I'm registered too and I'm less than 1/12 native... Which means essentially nothing🤣

My grandfather's mother was Caddo. Grandpa LOOKED LIKE his Caddo mother (although he was only half). His daughter (my mother) LOOKED INDIAN like her father (although she was only about a quarter), and I LOOK Indian, because I look like my mother, (although I'm only about 10%). NATIVE AMERICANS think I'm Indian, that's how much I look it, but I'm only 10%. The Indian phenotype is "VERY POWERFUL," dominating other ethnic facial features, for MANY GENERATIONS. My grandfather's line goes back, probably HUNDREDS OF YEARS, in Northeast Texas. They were there before the Spanish OR the English arrived. And I'm ashamed to say, I've never been there, but that doesn't mean I never will. Thanks for the video

When I was a little kid in Oklahoma in the early 1950s, a Caddo chieftain and his family moved into the house immediately next door. They had two sons and the father said he had moved off the reservation because he wanted his children to attend the public schools. I was about three years old and didn't know how to spell at the time but I remember their last name sounding something like "Hensugar". We became friends and I played cowboys and indians with the youngest son and he always wanted the indians to win, which I couldn't understand. The older son took us crawdad fishing down by a creek. When our family was invited into their home I saw that they didn't have a TV or sofas or chairs but ate on the floor which puzzled me. They were really nice people though, very kind and hospitable.

A tornado destroyed the original visitor center and museum in 2019. They are rebuilding and will hopefully be back to normal in the near future. Check their Facebook page for updates. facebook.com/visitcaddomounds/

This part of Cherokee County along State Hwy 21 has had quite a few tornadoes over the years. For some reason, the city of Alto is like a bulls eye for severe storms.

Hey Chet- did they happen to leave a note telling us how to keep the mosquitos out of their houses?!! East Texas would've been unbearable otherwise! I mean, one can only walk around covered in mud for so long, right... Plus, I could REALLY use that info for my chemical free yard!
