Ever been confused about that sloping knife that's included in a tool set you've bought to cut lino? I'll show you how to use it and what a fantastic precision tool it is for cutting lino as well as woodblock. For linocutters new to cutting wood, I'll show how the two materials differ and some things to watch out for when cutting wood (especially thin ply) for the first time. The wood I am cutting is shina ply - this type is sold as 'Asian Ply' by Great Art and the wider flat tool I mention comes from Handprinted who also sell left handed hangi-tos handprinted.co.uk/ www.greatart.co.uk/ If you are enjoying & learning from my films and would like to chip in and help us keep these videos free at source, we have a fundraising page at GoFundMe gf.me/u/zd8bcq :)

Hi Laura, in fact I was kinda confused about this blade when I got my first linocut set. Even though I did some linocuts in the meanwhile; I didn't find out. Your video just opened my eyes, merci beaucoup! 😀

Hi Laura, I hav been watching your tutorial on wood cutting with the knife. Very helpful. At the end you mentioned sanding the wood after cutting. I'll have to experiment but I have been lightly sanding my lino after cutting. I found that tiny ridges pop up around the V gouge cuts. These ridges can hold excess ink especially in the detail work of grass or fur. The sanding seems to limit the build up of ink. Though it still happens after multiple prints i don't have to stop and clean the plate as often.

So helpful Laura....I am determined to get more comfortable with my knife :). Watching you cut makes the handling of the knife so clear! Up unil now I don't think I have been holding it at enough of an angle so I did not create enough of a slope... Thanks again :)

Hello. Love all your videos. Question if I may. How do you care for wood blocks. Cleanup? Care? After inking?

Really interesting. I've seen this knife used to outline then cut a sliver away against the outline to remove some material before cutting out the body of the Lino.

same here. that is how traditional japanese wood block carving is done. it works just as well for Linoleum and gives the most precision in carving.

I notice you are using a very thin piece of Shina. Do you have any issues with the wood warping?
