THIS STORY:
Lewis Thornton Powell was a Confederate soldier who attempted to assassinate William Henry Seward as part of the overall Lincoln assassination plot.
He was caught and hanged along with three other conspirators; Mary Surratt, David Herold and George Atzerodt. They were all immediately buried adjacent the gallows in the prison yard. But eventually their bodies would be turned over to their respective families.
But when Lewis' family came to claim him, his head was gone.
More than a century later, his skull was discovered in one of the most unlikely places.

Good evening. To add to your story, my 2X Great-Uncle, John Walley, was a Captain in the Veteran Reserve Corps who guarded Mary Surrat and other co-conspirators while the trials took place. The VRC were assigned to different prisoners each day. John said that John Wilkes Booth body was held on the ship for so long that it became impossible to autopsy, so it was dumped over the side of the ship! Also, he was with Mary Surrat on the day the sentences were given. When told that she would hang, she asked, "For what?" A priest who had come in, asked if he could pray for her and she covered her head, turned toward the wall and was silent. Those in the VRC who guarded the prisoners were not allowed to witness their execution. General Hancock, who was head of the VRC, was very troubled that he had to execute a woman.

Interesting info. Never gave any thought where the hanged bodies went. Bit bizarre on Booth dumped in the river but I believe it could easily happened in the spirit of practicality. By that time Booth would've been so decomped there really would be no reason to autopsy other than as a formality. Everyone knew what he died from so they wouldn't have learned anything new. Thanks for sharing.

What an interesting story. I’ve seen his picture before but I’ve never heard that incredible back story. It’s actually tragic. He was only 21 when he died, he’d fought on both sides of the War between the States. I bet his mind was so twisted. Thanks Ron!

Wow Ron, What a story! I appreciated the history lesson, as I never heard about this man nor his attack on President Lincoln's Secretary of State. It's sobering to think of the fate of such criminals in those times facing such horrible deaths for their crimes. The photo of Payne in prison is quite jolting too. But the part of the story about his head/skull being missing and then eventually interred with his body thanks to the efforts of his great niece after its unusual discovery strikes me as a poignant expression of redemption after so many years. Thanks very much for sharing this story with us!

Great story Ron, that includes an interesting side-note relative to history......a passion of mine . My wife and i are avid collectors of 17th and 18th century English antiques with a focus on the period of King George III of Great Britain. In addition to various furnishings and artifacts including written correspondence and signatures, I have a lock of his hair. I know... It may sound somewhat morbid but is interesting, in any case. I was also formerly a collector of Civil War artifacts with many coming from Gettysburg. I came across a section of pin-striped fabric that was from a dress belonging to Mary Todd Lincoln. I framed it and gave it to my granddaughter to prompt her interest in history. Lastly, you mentioned John S. Mosby,...I was a friend of a man who knew John Singleton Mosby. Mr. Phillip Liebmann was a young man and student who grew up in the same town in Virginia as Col. Mosby when Mosby served as a foreign ambassador for the U.S, government in the early 20th century. About 45 years ago, I had the pleasure of "shaking the hand of a man...who shook the hand of Col. John Mosby"...Mr. Liebmann had some fascinating recollections. Sorry for belaboring my experiences but I really did like this story.

Interesting to hear of someone who switched sides during the Civil War. I have a relative who also fought for the Confederacy, then for the Union. Thought that was rare, but maybe not?

Great Vider. Have you ever done one on Tom Horn? He was hung in Cheyenne and is buried in the Columbine Cemetary in Boulder, Colorado. His trial was fixed. They retried him in the 1990s and brought in evidence that were not used in the 1st trial. And found him innocent.

I'm a 69 year old native Floridian and I've seen quite a few of those trees with the twisty, turning branches during my lifetime. One thing that they have in common is that they were all oak trees.

At the start, when you leaned on the trunk of the tree to get out of the rain, I thought I saw a huge multi-legged bug right next to your shoulder! I thought - oh oh. But no, I guess it was Spanish moss. lol! What a story! What a great memory you have! The body's will to live is great, I guess why the struggling while hanging. A headless corpse - jeez whiz. I also wonder why the woman was hung...guilty by association? Have a great day! 🙂

Wow what a story! Do you think possibly the photographer that took his picture there on the boat managed to get his head?? He was so fascinated with him……paid one of the people involved with the burial to give him his head, then when he was done with it put it with the Indian relics? Creepy but possible! I went back and watched from the beginning. This was a story I didn’t know about. Had always only heard mostly about JWB. The trees there are absolutely beautiful. Really magical. It was so nice seeing the limbs from all the angles as you were walking around them. That made for the prettiest backdrop. Amazing trees.

Everything I've read about the story states that Lewis handled the hanging bravely. Such a shame he got mixed up with the wrong people. So much hatred between the North and South. I've always had such a crush on Lewis! Such a handsome lad. Just fell in with a foolish crowd at the wrong time. The way those prisoners were treated, was absolutely despicable. The government went out of their way to torture them all, since they were all guilty until proven guilty.

Hearing about the monitors made me think of the USS Cairo Gunboat and Museum in Vicksburg, Mississippi. It is part of the Vicksburg National Military Park. I looked at the website and it says "One of seven shallow-draft City Class river ironclads, The U.S.S. Cairo was commissioned in January of 1862. Named after towns along the upper Mississippi and Ohio rivers, the seven formidable City Class gunboats prowled the Mississippi River and connecting shallow waterways, menacing Confederate supply lines and shore batteries." I remember being in elementary school and getting to see a tour of it. Lots of history in Vicksburg. The Vicksburg Cemetery is I think, part of or next to or near to the VNMP as well. It is a beautiful park. Big buildings and monuments and statues and such. It was interesting hearing this information all over again. Glad justice was served. So sad about President Lincoln. He is my favorite President of all the Presidents.
