I've had the Wicked Edge for a year and a half now and love it. I have sharpened for myself, friends and family and they're all impressed with the edges I've put on their knives. One of my bosses at work brought me his Coast Cutlery hunting knives for deer. The year before he almost threw it in a ditch it barely got through 4 ribs on one doe during field strip. I did his knife, and it zipped through 4 deer before starting to dull.

I was one of those people with WE probs. I guess some of the early gens were off by a few deg. At first we thought it was the bar, but then figured out the deg screw was off. Then i ran into some probs with (short) small folders, in which i just put it as far as it could go. But dont hope for 15deg on some, unless you get mad enough to sharpen away some aluminum! Oh yes i did. For full flats, fill in the negative space with something. And for knives with no sharpening choil, either grind the plastic guards down on the dia hones, or match the grind grind with a dia file, which is what i did. And if you can sharpen a spyderco mantra 2... congratulations youve completed level 5 and youra master. : ) hope this helps some, thanks for the angle cube idea smokeater!! Oh and Kyle at wicked edge helped me with my issues with next day ship, 2 b expected... right? The end.

I completely agree. I had looked at numerous systems while shopping around, including the Nirey, and decided to spend the extra money on the Wicked Edge. I've never looked back or regretted it ever since. Everyone I've sharpened for has been impressed. Even my own mother's "back of the drawer" knives are resting back in the block again.

Thanks for the great videos! You do a great job in them. I've never been a knife guy but recently I took advantage of my fire job to purchase a hinderer. The thing is amazing. That led me to try to learn how to sharpen the darn thing. I went from an oil stone to the spyderco system and, after watching your and modifiedz videos, a wicked edge. I called them yesterday and, as a responder, qualify for a 25% discount. Can't wait for it to get here. Keep up the good work.

Great video. I bought both a KME knife sharpener for my scandi-edges and a Work Sharp knife and tool sharpener for my convex edges for less than $170 shipped and get fantastic results. The Wicked Edge charges an extreme amount of money for their system considering the significant design flaw you showed and the value of other products on the market, I think. The KME sharpener eliminates the problem you showed, by design, is smaller, lighter and just as precise and sturdy and works with any stones

Your observation about the left side being the stationary side and causing the right side to be off is spot on. The only issue I see (which sure as heck might be a non-issue) is that you used the base as a zero point instead of the flat of the blade. The blade should actually be your reference point for zero when selecting an angle so that you can counteract the differing angles on each side based on the angle at which the stones meet the blade, not the angle that the rods meet the base. It seems to me that would yield a more uniform edge overall. Just a thought really.

Great video! Knife sharpening is a skill you have to learn no matter what method you use. I have acquired a few sharpeners along the way. Ive had to learn to adapt to all of them. Each one has its own quirks..... Along with the operator who has a few quirks of his own!!! Practice with whatever you have and you will become good at it. I've seen a friend sharpen his knife with a coffee mug and the top edge of his car window! Sharp enough to do the paper test......

Thanks for the video, I appreciate the way you break this down. I have a question for you. If the left side jaw does not move and the right side opens up by a degree or so wouldn't the angle be off to compensate for the thickness of the knife making things accurate? I am new to all of this sharpening and I am considering one of these systems. My question comes from wanting to learn. i was wandering of the jaws hold this knife perfectly up and down. If not the off angle might be compensating for the off set holding position. Just a thought. If you can shed some light on this that would be great! Thanks again.

My grandfather, former Army Ranger, used to sharpen his Ka-Bar on a rock he'd pick up from the edge of the river, and then proceed to cut firewood, trim line, and filet fish with it. If he saw me take out a digital angle-measuring tool before I put an edge on my own knife, he'd backhand me into the dirt. The 21st Century has brought us the Cult of the Needlessly Complicated.

The jaws on the system aren't parallel holding the knife. If you adjusted the vise screws to parallel, would that help with more equal angles?

came for the WE, saw the copper coils stoves in the back... cool, I never made one of those yet, as my tektoba capillary hoop stoves, and BL's do damn good... may get a wicked edge later on, lansky diamond deluxe, with blue saphire, and leather strop with 2-3 micron jeweler's rouge, is doing just fine now, more work and time than the WE, but a good kit bang for your buck imo. kinda looking at the new KME... as it has infinite adjustments, best of both kits...

I understand for sure, I was once biased with the Edge Pro until I used the WE. I actually prefer it 10 fold over the Edge Pro now. I love the clamp, mine is jam up and I have no complaints over it. The diamond stones I love because to be honest I was tired of the mess the water stones makes. The WE is pretty accurate but not as accurate as the Edge Pro I admit. I use the angle cube on the WE and it works out great for it as well. Anyway thanks for sharing I appreciate it.

WickedEdge has a new version of the arm/clamp assembly with angle compensation screws that address this issue. Centering the clamp assembly on the pedestal helps with angle consistency also. Factory edges can have uneven edge angles that change the stone contact points. To take this out of the angle confusion, measure the angle on the stationary side of the clamp, mark the clamp and blade for position, take the knife out of the clamp, rotate the blade 180°, align marks, measure angle.

Actually the micro adjustments work really great, I actually tested the prototype arms for Clay, he gave me a set at Blade last year. For the amount of $$ these things cost they should be precise, machine-fit, without the need for washers and garbage to make them "feel nice". Jimmy-rigging with scraps isn't what a 500.00 rig should need. Ill stick to Japanese water stones.

Of course the angle cube has the ability to zero out with the push of a button so YES you are able to set everything exactly right. Yes I want the degree to be right especially if I have an angle cube to make it right. So the cube's accuracy is just fine especially if you zero it out. Thanks for educating me so much I appreciate it

This is a neat system and all. And I appreciate the video. However I've spent less than half of the lowest price of that sharpening system on a Harbor Freight 1"x30" belt grinder. I use 800 and 1000 grit belts, plus a Surgi-Sharp belt to get mirror polished convex edges on all my cutlery. I might have purchased one of these sharpening systems if they weren't so expensive.

Good video. The angle cubes are indeed accurate. Take it to a machinists bench and you'll find out. You don't need a lab, come one gimmie a break. Like the OP said, it's all relative. Once it's zeroed out it should be repeatable on both sides and accurate to with a half degree at least. That's still far more accurate than anyone can be by hand on wet stones.

Good video. I AM biased, for me the Edgepro is the best system you can get. The disadvantages with it are 1) the danger of scuffing the blade while moving it along the table. Taping the blade eliminates that completely. 2) The minute change in angle when using worn stones. The angle cube and drill stop collar eliminates that completely. For me, on the Wicked Edge that upward standing blade, diamond stones and crappy clamp are dangerous, inaccurate & expensive. The WE is a gimmick, EP is a tool

damn brother i thought you were a edge pro guy!! you own both of em!!? seems like there both great sharpening systems although i feel like the edge pro looks to be a better design seeing you only have to get one good angle and flip the knife instead of having to match up to angles on each side and switch the stone every time you change sides of the blade! i feel like a lot of people are biased and never actually use both of them and just preach for the one they bought!

I might have misunderstood I get so much crap on here that it is not funny, the one degree will make a huge difference though when you are putting a mirror polish on a knife you can noticeably see the difference on the edge. It is crazy but if you are trying to put a mirror polish on a 400 knife you want it to be perfect. The Wicked Edge is damn near perfect now since Clay as come up with the micro adjustment arms. Thanks for the video! Just for future reference chamois leather cloth is pronounced "shammy". Originally chamois leather came from the European mountain goat of the same name and in Europe is usually pronounced "sham-wah". I think most chamois leather comes from deer, goats or sheep nowadays and some cheaper stuff is a fabric that poorly simulates the real stuff.

I don't care how out of level something is as long as you zero out the cube on the mounting base the wicked edge is mounted to, you will always get the right bevel that you setup on your knife. I will do a video showing exactly what I am talking about so that you understand. If you have never messed with one of these you will see what I mean.

The only other way to get "perfect" angles on both sides of the blade is to make both jaws of the clamp movable and independent of each other and a way to set a true zero after the blade is clamped in. After blade is clamped in and the gap between clamps is divided evenly, you can use your angle finder to set the true angle for each side. I think that we are over analyzing this thing. One degree difference is negligible and I seriously doubt if anyone could tell the difference in knife performance with just one degree difference.

I didnot wanted to say that Wicked Edge is bad or unnecessary (im looking to buy some sharpening system myself) just i dont think that its a problem if its one degree off. I actually consider buying it. If you sharpen by hand chances are that you may be more than one degree off but i think it does not makes much of a difference considering sharpness. Wicked Edge may have flaws but this is not important one. And yes all my knives are under 100$ (gumball machine)

hahahaha, I love all the whiners in these comments. I've sharpened tools and knives for years by hand but what won me over with the Wicked Edge is the organic shapes like an Emerson Commander. The ability to keep the exact blade shape and angles are a huge plus with these types of systems. If you are just doing basic blade shapes, chisels, plane blades then yeah, just stick to hand sharpening and stropping them. When you take things to the next level, look at the Wicked Edge or another similar system like The Edge Pro, or a Lanky, etc...
@jwxfd

Agreed, one of the main aspects of the WEPS is repeatability. Yes, other sharpening systems can produce a sharp edge on a knife. But with most systems, as soon as you remove the knife from the chuck, your dimensions and angles (settings) are out the door. If you wanted to do a quick touch up, i.e., strop etc...getting your angles where they were when you finished up the last time is extremely difficult compared to the WEPS. IMO, that makes the sting of the initial investment of the WEPS a little easier
