amzn.to/37EL0AJ - OEM Toyota Brake Master Cylinder with Booster assembly
Toyota Part # 47200-0C073
amzn.to/3CG7ZKm - Milwaukee M12 3/8" Ratchet
Mystery Solved!!!!
Just a quick video showing how I fixed a brake master cylinder that had been leaking on this truck for several years. The new owner, and previous owner had taken it to a few shops and they couldn't find the leak. It turns out it had been leaking fluid into the brake booster and was probably getting sucked into the intake and burning off over time. The way I found the leak, is when I heard a sloshing sound when bleeding the brakes after replacing a wheel cylinder.
We ended up replacing the master cylinder and booster since it had been leaking into the booster for so many years.
Bleeding the 3rd chamber on the master cylinder is tricky, but follow the Toyota Manual shown in the video at 19:19 and it works great.
You will need:
12mm sockets and/or wrench
10mm sockets and/or wrench
10mm flare nut wrench or 'line wrench'
8mm wrench for bleeding the 'unicorn' bleeder valve on the 3rd chamber
wobble extensions
Needle nose pliers
Someone to help you bleed the brakes

You absolutely NAILED my problem. Loss of brake fluid with zero puddles and suddenly plumes of white smoke from the exaust. Master cylinder was leaking into the booster causing vacuum to pull fluid into intake. Replaced both components, cleaned out engine and exauast system with chems and my 2004 Tundra is purring. I was very clise to shit canning it but did not thanks to your video. Thanks, man!

Thanks for sharing. I just finished replacing the master cylinder/ booster on my 2006 SR5 DC Tundra and didn’t know to bleed the master cylinder. The mushy pedal when running went away as soon as I bled the cylinder and left front caliper. Thanks again for sharing.

Great video. FSM is a little vague without your explanation. I wonder if you could have used a master brake cylinder bleed kit and attach the new MBC ports with fittings and a hose submerged into the MBC fluid expressing all the air from the new pumping piston. Might be less brake fluid getting everywhere

I know right? I heard it too. My Tundra used to do that same cold start knock too until I changed to full synthetic oil, and now it doesn’t do it anymore. The knocking sound does go away when the truck warms up though. Thanks for watching! -Dan the Fix it Man

Nicely done vid, clear explanations of everything including the somewhat unusual bleeding process. Thank you for sharing this. One MAJOR question: where did you get the new booster /master assembly? I've been trying to locate one for my 2005 double-cab 4WD, including at the Toyota dealership, and am having a very difficult time of it. Any thoughts on where to get one of these? My truck is now "dead in the water" until I can get this assembly. Cheers!!

Did you ever find an assembly? I believe I have the same problem, but cannot seem to find it either. The one linked is unavailable. I'm not sure if you could replace the master cylinder and the booster but reuse the middle part (not sure what it's called).

@@timothydriscoll8498 Hi, Timothy. Yes, I finally got the OEM Toyota assembly. I ordered it from Amazon, using the link provided in Dan's video. Amazon's ad stated "Only 2 left in stock, order now!!" I placed my order, and then waited. And waited. And waited. The scheduled delivery date came & went, and Amazon offered a refund since my part was apparently "lost". I took the refund, then pursued a conversion kit from SOS Performance, which involved installing a Sequoia MC directly onto my booster, without the middle piece (which Toyota calls the "third chamber"). The conversion worked well, but the Sequoia MC provided by SOS leaked from the reservoir. They sent me a replacement, and it ALSO leaked! Then, like a bolt from the blue, the Toyota assembly suddenly arrived on my doorstep. At that point, I went ahead and installed the Toyota OEM assembly, and returned the SOS conversion for a refund. My truck seems to be fine now, after much agony and frustration. As for trying to replace your MC and booster, but retain the original middle piece, I doubt if that is going to work. First, the parts will be hard to find. Second, the source of the leakage in the first place is most likely the middle piece, rather than the MC. This whole situation is very messy and frustrating, and the OEM assembly from Toyota is all but impossible to find right now, being on nationwide back-order, with no definite ETA. All I can say is "good luck". The SOS conversion may work out OK for you, but I got turned off when 2 MCs in a row leaked. Possibly you could buy the SOS kit, then buy an OEM Sequoia MC that presumably would not leak. But, that's a pretty expensive option. Again, good luck!! I'll be glad to share more details on my experience with the SOS conversion, just let me know. Cheers!

I have an 06 tundra limited. It’s a wonderful truck with with 254,00 and runs like a sewing machine. I do have brake issues. I have replaced the master cylinder as I couldn’t seem to build pressure and have bled the system so many times it’s stupid. I just did rear wheel bearings along with new wheel cylinders ,drums and shoes. Now I’m back to square one with crap brake pressure and can’t seem to get the parking brake dialed in. Could it be my booster has been bad or weak all along??
@DantheFixitMan
@DantheFixitMan 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Chad, The booster may not necessarily be your problem. When you do bleed the brakes, are you able to build pressure at the pedal? Does your master cylinder have the additional bleeder valve (3rd chamber with the 'unicorn'). If so, you may just need to bleed that on the master cylinder. Watch the video and follow those instructions at 19:19 shown on the screen. Also, are you bleeding the LSPV when you are bleeding the brakes? A lot of times that gets missed as well. Best of luck to you. -Dan the Fix it Man

2 questions. First, is there any reason why I shouldn’t vacuum bleed the brakes? Second, are you at liberty to divulge how much that master cylinder/vacuum booster cost? My friend’s 05 Tundra is leaking into the booster and while I was using the truck, the brakes failed catastrophically. The pedal went to the floor and the brakes ceased to work from that moment on. Reservoir empty. I’ve seen that the dealerships are charging $5,000 for the part you installed. Just really curious what you paid or even what you charged is close enough. I assume there was a markup.

Sorry, I just now saw your comments on here. Yes, you can vacuum bleed the brakes, but I don't know how or if that would work with the 3rd chamber (unicorn valve) on the master cylinder. My friend bought the new master cylinder and booster together online and I think it was around $950. I put the link in the description. Thanks for watching! -Dan the Fix it Man

I got brake booster from local wrecking ysrd and master cylinder for $30 each snd installed. I had no idea when I started the process what I was doing but I ended up it was the same problem in mine was the little gasket seal where it goes from the master cylinder into the brake booster there was like a hole like that seal just it failed just a little bit and that's all it took and so I had to remove this and but instead of spending hundreds of dollars I spent about $30 each and installed it it was a pain and it took me a little while but it was worth it and then I bled the brakes and before I started I didn't know any of it and I ended up getting it all done for a fraction of the price

My question is, was it the failure of the master cylinder that caused the fluid to leak into the the booster or is it a faulty booster that caused the leak?

Hi Lex, I think it took me around 3-4 hours, but that was with filming it and figuring out the bleeding of the 3rd chamber etc. I could probably do it faster if I had to do it again. The hardest part was probably lining up the brake lines and making sure they didn’t bend much when taking out the old master cylinder and booster. Best of luck to you! Hello. Was experiencing soft brake pedal so I changed my MC and booster. (Only that since the other part is a unicorn) Then bled the brakes. Still soft. After watching your video saw I missed the LSPV. However, after bleeding that. Its now worse than before changing out parts. Went to bleed again and now no fluid comes out of the rear brakes. I am missing something or is it the dreaded unicorn piece? Thank you.
