the swimming is kind of stupid now, with almost a third of the race being made of jump/underwater+turns. They should start all in the water IMHO

Breaststroke is way different from what it used to be. It's almost like they're trying to toe the line between breaststroke and something else because breast is an inefficient way to swim. The aesthetic gets increasingly closer to butterfly in a way, which makes sense for efficiency reasons.

Peaty is so far ahead, then next fastest person hasnt even gone a low 58 let alone the 56.88 and those 2 seconds are basically years so the next fastest person is two years away from peaty, and i know this myself as i swim a 1:04 long course

Great video...covered a lot of interesting ground coherently. Amazing how there is such a huge gap between number 1 in the world and everybody else.... highly rare in any sport.

The most remarkable thing about Peaty is his high turnover. Other guys extend their streamline and basically stop swimming every stroke. Why? Peaty proves that if you're a strong athlete, there is no reason to pause at the end of your kick.

Adam Peaty's tempo is absolutely insane. Watching him swim breaststroke next to other people it almost looks like they're swimming in slow motion because of how fast Peaty's tempo is.

This is the best explanation of swimming speed I've seen on the web. Feres, you are as good as Maglischo and right there with Doc. The one thing you're not talking about is Adam's amazing upper body -- his pull. Every great breaststroker has a great kick. But only Peaty and Dressel pull this strongly. The (ok some!) Japanese have a similar ability to get into streamlined position before kicking (still very rare even in great breaststrokers). But they aren't great strong athletes in the way Dressel and Peaty are. This is one of the most obvious and missed parts of great breaststroke swimming and training. Ask any coach you want how fast his or her swimmers pull and you get a blank stare. It matters. A lot. So does keeping from pushing out to the side walls and turning the hands upside down.

Hi Steve, thanks for the comment! He has a great feel of the water and a lot of power. Not all swimmers can swim with this much power and will need to focus on proper technique to reach their full potential.

Really helpful thankyou! I realise now my legs were too wide. There is such a variety of techniques shown in breastroke videos by swimming instructors so I picked up a bad habit. I spent years training my kick actually, though I didn't realise it accounted for as much as 80 percent of the forward momentum of the breastroke. I would swim many lengths using only my leg kick, arms behind back, or holding an inflatable raff in front of me, focussing on keeping my whole body rigid, flat on the surface of the water which increase my efficiency and speed through the water. My arm stroke though was never well developed. I could not coodinate it with the leg kick. No matter how much slow mo swimming videos I watched I could not put both together, yet I play piano which requires me to play a right hand melody and completely different notes in the left hand reading two different lines of piano music one above the other at the same time. So why could I not coordinate the arms and legs? Breaststroke has got to be the most inefficient stroke though! I wonder who invented it. I mean who thought to swim with this technique. I can understand using it as a diver while underwater. When I trained breastroke I actually experimented with staying underwater longer-staying underwater for two strokes, then coming up for air. Probably didn't do my time any good, but I found it more enjoyable to spend more time underwater and to train myself to stop going up for air. I adore just swimming underwater, and the only reason I like breast stroke is that it was half underwater. From there I started swimming 100 percent underwater using a combination of freestyle and breaststroke, or breaststroke with only the leg kick. I sought to find the most comfortable efficient way to swim in the water, that left me less out of breath and was the most enjoyable. I think any swimmer would find swimming totally underwater and only coming up to surface when absolutely necessary for air is the most enjoyable swimming experience. I greatly admire free divers. But alas the best I could do in diving was to stay underwater for 1 min 10. seconds, which is feeble.There seemed to be some physical limit for me, maybe a very mild form of asthma. I would commonly swim 2 lengths of the pool, all underwater, was such a thrill, and everybody would be like "where's he gone?", and the lifeguards would keep getting worried until they got used to me. But starting with the breastroke, that stroke inspired me to stay underwater during the stroke for longer and longer until I never came up for breath so I'm grateful for the breastroke for that.

@@abhinavprakash2320 two strokes = one cycle in freestyle and backstroke. In breaststroke and butterfly, one cycle = one stroke.

6:01 which means no glide is what im see in adam peatty and i just dont understand it. No one gets his glude like where is it isn't that one of the most important part of breaststroke.

It's a combination of a powerful kick and a quick recovery! He gets into streamline and into that glide so quickly, but recovers and does it again to maintain top speed! This takes a lot of energy, however, which is why you don't see him in the 200 breaststroke often - where you need that glide to be efficient

It's easy. He chops his stroke. The kick creates the most propulsion, he gets more kicks than others.

his legs are also short, his knees dont come up far, so a huge amount of power generated. I saw him doing plyometric pushups, where you pushup and clap which i did for years. For the legs I would do weighted squats with heavy barbell on shoulders doing jumps, jumping lunges with weights -barbell on shoulders, plus another jumping lunge with dumbbells either side. This is to add power to the leg kicking motion which is a push action, rather than a pull. Also the leg press, where you are seated almost vertically, with the weight above you almost, you can do that plyometrically for power, set a heavy weight and as the weight comes down, keep pushing it back up super quickly.

Dressel most likely peaked at budapest, i doubt he will go back to being in that kind of form. If he does, his 100 fly will be fast and close to the world record which he almost broke. 100 free isn't anything special, and 50 free he has Ben Proud to contend with who broke Dressel's textile world record. Dressel is insane all around, but isn't on god tier level in a certain stroke like Peaty.
