A good teacher is next to God! you're an excellent teacher. Your talent lies in your ability to clearly convey the clarity of your mind and that is something that can't be taken for granted. Please keep making these wonderful class videos. As to the Myth of Sisyphus - I suspect that revolt can't help but be exposed as another attempt to find meaning and as such revolt is not free of philosophical suicide. Camus simply resumed the struggle and tried yet another possibility as if listening to Didi when Gogo declares: "nothing to be done." in Waiting for Godot: ... and Didi responds: "I'm beginning to come round to that opinion. All my life I've tried to put it from me saying Vladimir be reasonable, you haven't yet tried everything. and I resume the struggle."... By keeping the Absurd alive we turn it into an enemy which by itself gives it meaning which in turn gives meaning to our revolt against it. Thus the only genuine revolt which is free of admission to a meaning implies inescapable suicide.

filmovia Outstanding critique. My students and I were just this week considering whether Camus' literary career itself is not philosophically suicidal. Why take the pains to produce such obviously polished work if not for ones passion to do so? Thank you, Filmovia. Your kind words are especially meaningful to me given your clearly profound intellect. Love and Peace....

How is revolt a philosophical suicide if we’re keeping the absurd alive at every moment?

Killing yourself amounts to confessing that *life is not worth the trouble* Dying voluntarily implies you have recognized the ridiculous character of that habit (of living), the absence of any profound reason for living, the insane character of daily agitation and the uselessness of suffering. In a universe divested of illusions man feels an alien, a stranger...

Great lecture. I think the question weather or not someone can do something without meaning is fairly obvious. People do things that are meaningless all the time and they know they are doing these things for no real reason. I think the real question is how does one remain happy after an eternity of pushing the rock up the hill. The human mind craves novelty how does one reconcile that craving with the absurd ?

"I rise above nihilism by revolting against absurd." (giving life value is to *will life* in the face of the lack of any justification for doing so)

"Questioner: I am sorry for my lack of penetration of these mechanisms and I apologize for some rather stupid questions, but I think we have here a point that is somewhat central to what we are presently attempting to understand, so even though my next questions may be almost unacceptably stupid, I will attempt to try to understand what this power that our visitor [....] seeks is and how he uses it. It seems to me that this is central to the mind and the evolution of it, in which we are involved. As this entity that is our visitor increases his power through these works [through harming them] what is the power that he increases? Can you describe it? _Ra: I am Ra. The power of which you speak is a spiritual power. The powers of the mind, as such, do not encompass such works as these. You may, with some fruitfulness, consider the possibilities of moonlight. You are aware that we have described the Matrix of the Spirit as a night. The moonlight, then, offers either a true picture seen in shadow or chimera and falsity. The power of falsity is deep as is the power to discern truth from shadow. The shadow of hidden things is an infinite depth in which is stored the power of the One Infinite Creator._ _The adept, then, is working with the power of hidden things illuminated by that which can be false or true. To embrace falsity, to know it, to seek it, and to use it gives a power that is most great. This is the nature of the power of your visitor and may shed some light upon the power of one who seeks in order to serve others as well, for the missteps in the night are oh so easy._ 80.10 ▶ Questioner: Now, the fifteenth archetype, which is the Matrix of the Spirit, has been called the Devil. Can you tell me why that is so? _Ra: I am Ra. We do not wish to be facile in such a central query, but we may note that the nature of the spirit is so infinitely subtle that the fructifying influence of light upon the great darkness of the spirit is very often not as apparent as the darkness itself. The progress chosen by many adepts becomes a confused path as each adept attempts to use the Catalyst of the Spirit. Few there are which are successful in grasping the light of the sun. By far, the majority of adepts remain groping in the moonlight and, as we have said, this light can deceive as well as uncover hidden mystery. Therefore, the melody, shall we say, of this matrix often seems to be of a negative and evil, as you would call it, nature._ _It is also to be noted that an adept is one which has freed itself more and more from the constraints of the thoughts, opinions, and bonds of other-selves. Whether this is done for service to others or service to self, it is a necessary part of the awakening of the adept. This freedom is seen by those not free as what you would call evil or black. The magic is recognized; the nature is often not."_ The Law of One Ra Material (1981) (The archetypes spoken of are the major arcana. Seven there are for mind, seven for body, seven for spirit. Bet you didn't know that.) "It's all in the handbook!!! You probably haven't even read through the manual completely yet!!! This book reads like stereo instructions!" -- Beetlejuice

Ok, so is Camus basically saying, "Hey Sartre and Kierkegaard, you guys can leap and find meaning all you want but that meaning you find is always subjective and you can never prove it exists outside of your subjectivity. My philosophy is more accurate because I don't have to prove there's meaning. All I have to do is react and revolt to not knowing an answer and that position is kinda undeniable. So basically all we can do is live in protest to not having a meaning and that living will have a subjective value to ourselves. But that revolt in and of itself is not a meaning. There is and will never be meaning. Is that about right?

Quite a good take. His distinction between "meaning" and "value" is crucial. The former is an illusion., the latter, an opportunity. True, nothing we do means anything, but realizing this in juxtaposition to our desperate need that it does, makes possible my defiance of the absurd. For S.K. we are better off this way, namely, free.

Albert Camus deeply influenced me. I think Albert Camus himself must have been very influenced by Nietszche as you mentioned in this video.

Is Nihilism equated with The Absurd ?
@OMGwtfSTFUbrb
@OMGwtfSTFUbrb 6 жыл бұрын
BJ San Antonio not really, but the truth of the world being nihilistic in nature gives rise to the absurd due to the human will to meaning. So basically: if the world was not nihilistic we would just find the meaning we seek and there would not be “the absurd”. And if humans had no will to meaning, we would also be without “the absurd” because we don’t find anything weird or disturbing about meaninglessness.
