@MrMarinus18
@MrMarinus18 Ай бұрын
7:08 That's actually illegal as that's considered a modification and you need a licence to modify sky rockets. After all if you attach a figure to it, it unbalances the rocket and it will likely go sideways and hit something. That's also why the mythbusters used roughly circular weights attached to the tip as that wouldn't unbalance it too much.

15:07 I hate to break your illusion Kari, but here in Europe, and germany as well, we have probably even more weak fireworks since we have a HUGE lot of rules and laws about them. And without a license that qualifies you for using professional fireworks its even forbidden to simply BUY fireworks except around New Year. So the change to get the needed fireworks in the US is a lot higher than in Europe, trust me.

I don't think the rocket myth was busted by what they did. There was enough thrust, so a better design would go the distance. Their reasoning was that "some guy" could not have built something better than they did, but I disagree. He just might have known what he was doing. The MythBusters definitely did not.
@WarhawkTalon
@WarhawkTalon Ай бұрын
Full agree. I was actually thinking they had a chance when I saw the idea for the full sled and the guide to launch it. But when Kari brought out that surf board I knew what was going to happen. The air got caught under the front of the curved board, and it sent Buster into a loop. I was also wondering why they chose such a steep launch angle of 45*. I would have figured 25-30 degrees would be sufficient. After all, the goal was to see how far the rockets could launch someone, not how high.

Some guy that totally did launch himself effectively but with next to no records as to how he accomplished the feat other than the amount of rockets and the presence of a ramp. We have a recording of the first guy who tried to parachute jump and died, and that was over 100 years ago. Yet not even a diagram as to what this supposed daredevil savant did? I'd say it's busted. It's theoretically possible for such a thing to happen, just as it is for you to win 5 multi million dollar lotteries in a row. I don't think it's in the realm of reason to take those odds.

pendulum rocket fallacy + spending part of the available thrust on rotation instead of forward motion. A better way for spin stabilization would be angled wings to produce roll. Tory on the other hand has center of thrust and center of mass not in line, so the thing will naturally want to pitch.

the rocket guy is totally possible, the issue they had there was that the rocket itself had an aligned center of mass and thrust vector but the manakin was attached too offsetting the mass and upsetting it. also the manakin should've been oriented the other way so feet against the rockets which when strapped down and with a foot plate would stop it from shifting
@leucome

It was also too short. Long design is what prevent rocket from spinning. Even the fireworks had a real long wooden stick in the back to keep them stable. They completely ignored one of the most essential thing that make rocket fly straight.
@stellsy3496

@@leucome the sick does the same job as a fin yes, by bringing center of pressure behind center of mass. tho i think the engine block of sorts bring blocky and having a large surface area combined with a person weighing a lot compared to the rest would already do that, based on eye measurement the center of pressure is just where the dummes head is, and the center of mass just about where is chest is. flipping the dummy would make said relation even better. but the more the better, aerodynamic stability can help offset poor thrust alignment

I am from Germany and to this day I find this myth very suspicious, first of all you can buy fireworks only for 1 or 2 weeks per year, as a normal person the amount of fireworks you can buy is very low. And the only way I can Imagine that myth could be true is when it came to be bevor the 1950 or 1960 because fireworks were not regulated back then. But still if some German guy came up with this idea, he would most likely not be just some naive random German guy, most likely how that came to be is that he studied something like engineering, aerodynamic or something similar and quickly ran the numbers bevor he came up with the plan. Most kind of myths like that originated from some students or from someone with background knowledge. BTW is not that hard to get a license for commercial fireworks in Germany.

NRW was quite open. AND as soon as you go east once, you have a country starting with P, that probably has rockets that can lift a full kilo. :D (thats why we call the dangerous stuff "polen böller" which roughly translates to 'pole crackers') and yes, i know what im talking about, ive seen enough blown out doors, cracked manhole covers, ripped car underbellies and vanished mailboxes in my life.

It's not so much the "weapon" and more the overally situation and potential misuse of _any_ weapon against assumed threats that may in fact be harmless and innocent. Though I guess the "non-lethal" label lowers the inhibition to use stuff like pepper sprays, water cannons, tasers, ... in questionable situations...
