This makes you wonder why robots weren't a thing until fairly recently. Steampower was a thing back then. Intellectuals has steam-powered contraptions that were basically fun little trinkets. Making an automaton similar to that requires a lot moving parts not to mention a stable power source. Neither were something people of the older times could have (hell even today we can't make a proper humanoid robot), sure such machines can exist in fiction but that's it fiction.

@@Mate397 I forget which century, but much earlier than you'd think, there were beautiful mechanisms which looked like, for instance, cranes, and could make motions such as flapping wings through gear mechanisms. The original commenter was saying that people of history should have more prominently thought of robots or man-like mechanisms due to historical facts that already exist very adjacent to robots. They were not saying they expected people to have made steam powered robots.

Knowing that to be historical fact, it is not a far reach to wonder why people didn't make similar gearbox sculptures which emulate humans

I remember in the Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordan uh spoilers a head but it's relevant to a point not to speak too ill of the dearly departed couple times over. They fought a slightly smaller prototype version of Talos which seemed more practical with the heel weakness it was a maintenance hatch that let 1 character enter and destroy it from the inside. Sadly though this character died in her effort which seems like a harder weakness to exploit then remove a nail and he'll bleed out
