I keep my formers clean and also thinly coat them with a little silicone grease. Smooth ripple free bends.

Hi Lawton tubes & PB - Many years ago I decided to invest in the purchase of a Rems Curvo electric pipe bender - primarily for bending stainless tubing which it does with great ease and perfect bends - I also hoped to use the machine for bending standard British plumbing copper tube 22mm to 35mm - however I was very disappointed to find that the copper tube rippled badly using the Rems machine. Only after many phone calls to Rems did I eventually manage to get an answer as to why this was happening - it turned out that the machine was designed for the European copper standard - this is now table Y in Britain which as Lawton tubes have clearly explained is a thicker walled tube but with the same hardness (half hard). Great informative video Lawton.

In days of old when it was either galvanised iron or lead pipe then came copper pipe and we all believed the copper-to-iron fitting was the best fitting ever invented. Copper pipe came in, Blue band Yellow band, and Red band, Blue band being the thickest wall. Yes I was an apprentice to Noah. .

So it begs the question, why don’t we use the 1mm wall thickness tube in the U.K. as standard and drop the 0.7mm

Because 0.7 tube bends very well if used in the correct type of bender. Why overengineer any more than we already do just so we can use foreign pipe benders? And, as others have said, cost. In Italy, they use thin hard copper for the straights and soft copper for the bends. But due to cost, they rarely use copper at all. Our old UK tube was thicker, back in the day when we didn't have central heating and only really used it for hot and cold water pipes. If the UK market kept using the same quantity of tube, but switched to thicker wall, would current copper supplies even cope with demand? Now that's a question...

So in UK it’s very much 70 / 30 in copper, we are one of Europe’s largest users of copper in plumbing I’m pleased to say 👍 Plastic has its place mainly in underfloor heating where it’s key not to have any joints or fittings.
@LawtonTubes
@LawtonTubes Жыл бұрын
Sadly with most plastics it all ends up in landfill when finished with unlike copper which can be 100% recycled time after time. Sustainably is much becoming a BIG in construction so copper in States will be seen a lot more for sure 👍

@@LawtonTubes that’s a good observation, but PEX pipe is left installed for much longer than copper, so it’s not a simple comparison.

Because most heating systems in UK don’t run at very high pressures so making 0.7mm more than suitable for the job so why pay 30% more for a tube that’s not necessary.

When I was learning I was told it's all in technique and he also proved to me why, he showed me how he could purposely ripple copper and it's all in the technique of bending. Hard to explain but it's basically to do with one fixed point and one moving point, not moving them together like scissors? I dunno something like that

Alternately, benders not designed for UK pipe standard. The gas pressure is minimal, 1/3 PSI (2 PSI in some new residential builds). Copper tube 15mm dia x 0.7 wall has a bursting pressure of 58 bar ; over 840 PSI, so a colossal factor of safety. For comparison, plastic carbonated drink bottles contain pressures of 30 to 50 PSI, and fail at over 150 PSI.

I use a BenditNow bender (designed for UK table X tube, not the Bahco shown that was apparently designed for table Y), greased the roller bearings when new, clean and wax the guides every few months, and I don't have rippling, well, once every few months just before I rewax my bender lol. Usually use Wednesbury or Yorkshire tube, both from UK...

I had a set of screwfix pipe benders that i used for many years . They were great but started rippling. I figured they were worn out so i bought some new hilmor benders that day, which also rippled the same pipe. I figured it was the pipe at fault. I often work with a mate. He has rothenberger benders. He pulls a bend no ripples, i pull a bend in the same pipe with the same benders and it ripples. So im guessing its me and my technique some how? 🤷‍♂️
@johnbull5394
@johnbull5394 Жыл бұрын
Try cleaning the guides and formers, grease the 'bearing' of the rollers on your bender and a light bit of furniture polish on the guides and formers. I put beeswax polish on my guides and formers once every few months and it seems to prevent rippling. Modern Hilmor benders are very poor compared with the old Hilmors, by the way.

Having recently worked on my old ½" copper pipes, I was amazed how much thicker the walls were compared to modern 15mm. On bending the 15mm I found every second bend ended up slightly rippled, even using a new pipe bender & the same tubing. Basically modern stuff is c*** compared to the past.

We commonly bent 35, 42 & 54mm copper tube with a Ratchet Bender in the 80 & 90’s. Though maybe 90degree bends in these sizes are not common, kicks & offsets are still required. I’ve a 15mm Bacho Bender & it bends without ripples. Anyone want to buy it, make me an offer👍👍

It's the benders, they are very bad quality. They have lower tooling tolerances since they moved to production to China. Buy a 2nd hand bender or a bend it now. Want to 180 15mm bender, get a 2nd hand record solo. I got one for £15 never rippled a bend.
