Yea I made a pretty big mistake on that one to be honest I really never messed with them I did build a few 318 poly engines back in the 80's but they were just stock rebuilds nothing special although I do remember the rocker shafts are a giant pain to remove some times you can overlook mistakes and just let the video run but in this case it was just not possible and it had to be corrected what's so stupid about it is my buddy in HS had a barracuda with a 273 and I worked on that car with him often the old memory just isn't what it used to be I guess

Some useless information is that lean burn would modulate vacuum to increase timing based upon how long the pedal had been pressed. The idea being on the highway add timing to sip the fuel and increase efficiency. So cars that had been on the highway for a trip when getting off the highway were known to be noticeably peppier as all the added timing remained for a bit.

My parents traded in their 77 F150 Supercab for a new 86 Dodge Ram van conversion with the 318 (I think it was called the 5.2 by that time). I remember it was difficult on cold starts. It was sold before my Dad transferred to Washington, D.C. Mom and Dad later bought a new 89 Dodge Ram van conversion after Dad transferred back to his prior work location. By then, the 5.2 had changed to EFI, and started with a cinch. The van served them well.

Great vid as usual , thanks for putting this together !!! The 392 weighs about 30 lbs more than a standard 413. A Max Wedge 413 will weigh more than a 392. A bare iron 392 head weighs 70 lbs , about the same as a big block Chevrolet . The true reasoning of the early hemi being discontinued is really lost to time. Don Garlets said that he was told that the 413 was 54 dollars cheaper to produce than a 392 . Frustrated NASCAR racers ( for Mopar ) at the time said that they would rather have a 331 from 1955 than the 426 Wedge engine they were using , ( the reason for the 426 Hemi development ). The stock big block heads fell off on the big end .
@richardprice59788 ай бұрын
for reference my 906 1969 heads ( 383 B g-code+ auto/727 ) were 30-50~lb sorry im forgetting i weighted the difference between my newer D8 casting's ( 50-85lb par is 160lb extra ( heads only not counting the block or intake's ect differences ) over my charger's nose, as i worried it might change my handing/daily driving experience, new-transmission is a tr6070 dropout ) aka 426-hemi both in iron plans if i don't like it is to use a composite ( or aluminium ) hood/clip replacement panels

You just taught me what i already suspected; the 383 and especially the 400 could be made into one hell of a high winding, high horsepower engine. With the same heads and cam as a stock 440 why not? Back in the day it was said with a set of good valve springs these motors could turn 7000 rpm (especially the 383 because it had good compression) and as a kid my uncle had one in a Newport and i heard that 4 barrel absolutely scream!

The LA 318 began production for the 1967 model year not 69. The 318 Poly was used up until the 1966 models.

OOps. The 4 barrel version of the 273 was called "Commando" for the Plymouth line and "Charger" for the Dodges. It produced 235 horsepower with 280 lb. ft. of torque. These engines had 10.5/1 compression, a slightly larger cam than the 2 barrel engines, dual point distributor, an open plenum intake with a Carter AFB carburetor and a chrome unsilenced air cleaner. It also had black wrinkle finished valve covers with aluminum heat sink style top trim. The high performance single exhaust had a scavenging design head pipe, a large diameter intermediate pipe, a Hemi style muffler and a tail pipe with a stainless tipped resonator. Those engines were produced for the A bodied cars only from 1965-1967 in both the Dodge and Plymouth lines. In 1966, Dodge (only) produced a 275 horse version of the 273 to compete in the D stock classes for NHRA. It had a 4160 Holley carb, heavier valve springs, a Camcraft 284°/.500 lift cam, Doug Headers, a Hurst shifted 833-4 speed with a Weber clutch and a 8 3/4 Sure Grip with 4.86 gears. It ran 14.30's @ 92 mph. That engine was never available in the Plymouth line. Thanks

The 273 "D Dart" engines were supplied for class racing in the NHRA. The H.P. 273 motor for street use was rated at 235 horsepower. The street H.P. 273 engines are rare. The D-Dart 275 H.P. engines are museum pieces. One of my neighbors had a 1966 Barracuda with an H.P. 273/235 engine. It was a nice running engine with a good sound. Performance was "spirited" but not astonishing. You also mention later engines that were rated using "NET" horsepower instead of BHP. Most 360 LA engines were NET rated. Smog equipment hampered all engines at the end of the muscle car era, but the required NET ratings made the situation sound even worse than it was. You should note this.

With development the Poly engine could have been the top dog, It had a direct top to bottom flow direction just like the hemi., The reason Mopar switched to a inline valve engine was so the V 8 could be used in the Valiant chassis. Ford, GM and Mopar all their Compact cars with a narrow engine compartment. Both Ford and Mopar had to design a new engine to fit their compact Chassis.

Chrysler also didn't make a Windsor, a Cleveland, Y block, a MEL block, AFE block, etc. Most likely because those are industry patented terms! Ford never made a hemi, RB block, LA premium block, wedge engine. Mostly because these are engine family patented industry terms! My God are people ignorant
