It strikes me just how POSITIVE Erica is. Like, she literally just told Anneliese that how hard it is for her to just have a warm breakfast, then Anneliese (innocently, ofc) told her how SHE got everything handed to her with a little tidbit “But I’d rather be in the library”. Anyone who heard that would have a valid excuse to be mad or annoyed, but Erica instead saw a likeminded soul in Anneliese and told her “I’m just like you.” Even ANNELIESE was unsure and said “You are?” and Erica nodded before proceeding to sing that “There’s somewhere else we’d rather be. Somewhere that’s *ours.* somewhere that dreams come true.” And another reassurance: “Yes, I am a girl like you.” Something people really missed, even I missed, in this movie is while both girls tried to be optimistic about their respective situations, the one who is positive is Erica, while Anneliese was secretly negative about the whole thing. Erica was active whereas Anneliese was passive (as Erica worked hard despite the impossibility of her debt, yet Anneliese was born for duty and had been groomed so and she didn’t/couldn’t do anything else about the marriage she was about to be thrown to because that was her noblesse oblige). The girls are alike, but they were different. It was through this song that Erica could put a little more positivity into Anneliese who saw just how hard Erica lived but she remained positive, not to mention Erica herself UNDERSTOOD her despite their lives that were vastly different. Anneliese’s outlook in life changed when she met Erica. Erica’s character development, however, happened not when she met Anneliese but when she met Dominic as Anneliese.

something i really like about this song is them both acknowledging each others struggles without making it a weird suffering competition. and! it specifically highlights the fact that they both take responsibility and although they WISH they could be free to make their own decisions, they can’t just abandon the responsibilities they hold in their lives. i just found it nice that they found a kindred spirit in each other, even with their wildly different lives

I just realised that, this song is sort of a message that as much as you’re suffering right now, you’re not alone and that there are people out there who understands what you’re going through. The both of them talk about their current situations, but they’re not competing, they’re telling their stories and empathizing, and that they realise that “hey, you’re struggling, like me.”

I love that they are similar not just because "there is somewhere else I'd rather be" but also because they are both taking responsibility for a debt created by their parents. The queen is going bankrupt and the pauper's parents were in literal debt too. Neither girl created the problem, but is taing responsibility so that their parents don't have too. Both of them could just walk out on their debt. For example, the day Erika was in the marketplace singing, and Carp wasn't there, she could have just taken off running, left the kindgom and the debt behind. She could just walk out one day when the door was unlocked, and not come back. But she stays to pay her parents debt. Annalise doesn't even need to be explained, she's taking responsibility so her mom doesn't have to. We know too well what that's about. And yet, both girls are so selfless that even though they hate being where they are, they stay and obey for the sake of their parents and for others. ((In Annalises case, the people of her kingdom, in Erika's, the girl she works with. She could never leave her there alone to face The Madame's rath.)) They are just awesome role models for children. And in the princess in the popstar they- oh wait never mind. The only lesson in that movie was how much taking responsibility is stupid and boring and you shouldn't have to do it. GREAT JOB guys.

I think people are forgetting that Erica (the servant) is the one who said they were alike FIRST, not the princess. In fact, if you listen, she questions her. They have completely different lives, but they're both able to move past that and see the similarities instead of making it into a competition of who is suffering the most, which seems to be what a lot of people in the comments are doing. If you can't see that, then I don't know what to say. In the song itself, Erica's misfortunes are explained in depth and Annaliese's privilege is also explained. They KNOW how different their circumstances are, yet they can still relate to one another. It's a beautiful message that more people need to listen to nowadays. If we can find more ways to relate to others instead of separating ourselves based on our circumstances, then maybe we'd all be more empathetic and kind.

What I love about these two is they understand a hard situation one another is facing without a single complaining about how different their living conditions are. They just listen and showing one another a support with positive thoughts. I could imagine this happen to real people like... "Hey, too bad you got to marry a man you never know, but be concerned that living in a big castle, get almost everything you want, never feel cold or hungry is pure luck, I wish I were you. You better appreciated it"
