Improving the performance of the N-Audio/Behringer PP400 phono preamp with a few modifications.
You can purchase this phono preamp for around $20 on ebay, aliexpress, etc.

Nice mods. I have always liked the idea of taking lower cost products and beefing them up to improve performance. A comment on the music though, it seems that the least risky play time for music is 6 seconds or less now a days, to prevent flagging from the dreaded youtube music algorithm. Cheers,

Thanks, yeah agree, it's often possible to make a cheap product perform quite well with just a bit of engineering. Actually in my experience it's quite common to see high end products that are poorly designed in an attempt to differentiate themselves and claim unique "technology" :) I did get struck by the youtube music copyright claim even before I release the video, but it's not a problem because they don't delete the video anymore, they just let whoever claimed the copyright take all the ad revenue. That's fine with me, I just make these videos for fun.

Even though we would never be able to hear the goodness of the record played back. I think YT sucks for making you remove the audio.

Thanks, yeah this was a bit annoying because YT originally approved the video with the music sample, but then 2-3 weeks later I got a copyright strike. I even have some early videos that got a copyright strike years after they were published.

If these company’s consulted with you for a couple of hours the products in this world would have far better performance.

Thanks, yeah it's a bit strange they didn't put more effort into checking a product they've probably sold 10s of thousands of. First I thought maybe someone put in the wrong components, but nope, the component values are exactly what is written on the board.

Hello! Very keen to make this modification. Being a novice when it comes to electronics is there a list of components and what type of components would be best for the best results? Thanking you.

Hello, thanks for the video. I'm a beginner. Therefore, I would like to know. 1. To begin with, I want to change the 2k resistor to 1k. How much power should the resistance be? 2. Then I want to change the capacitor C4 to C11. I have a question. Can I use a 22 mf capacitor or should I definitely do 14.7? What voltage of capacitors should I use? 3. I also have a 50Hz background. I reduced it when I connected the ground. but still heard. I used a separate battery - the result is the same. Could the capacitors be faulty? which of them can be replaced? what type should they be? Sincerely, thank you. I am just learning.

Hi. I bought a preamp phono like this, but I had a ceramic pickup and the sound was too saturated. Now I know this pre amp is for magnetic pickup. Can I make a mod on this preamp to use on my pickup?

Yeah, usually ceramic cartridges have much higher output and need an amplifier with input impedance up in the mega ohm range. I haven't tried it but doing the following modification should work for changing this preamp into one that will work with ceramic cartridges, no new components required: 1. Remove the two resistors marked 47K (see 4:45 for reference) 2. Move the 2 resistors marked 1M to where the 47K used to be. 3. Short the pads where the 1M resistors used to be. 4. Remove the two capacitors marked 4.7uF/25V (3:54 for reference) This will change the gain and increase the input impedance. Hope this helps, Cheers, Jake

Thanks for this! How can I further mod this preamp to make it flat (non-RIAA)? Many thanks in advance.

You can just remove the 4 green capacitors (2 x 3.3nF and 2 x 820pF) but what would you use it for without the RIAA equalization?

Many thanks! I would rip CD-4 records to digital files (at half speed). They have very high frequency modulations that get attenuated with RIAA. Thanks again!

Sounds like an interesting project. You might need to lower the gain, you can do that by replacing the 2 x 1 Meg resistors with a smaller value, perhaps something around 20-100k

Many thanks! I will eventually materialize this project, but it will take a while.
