My wife grew up in rural China under the tail end of Mao's reign. They pumped water by hand outside the home for all needs, including watering the crops, cooking, bathing, etc. They kept perishables in a root cellar, and the entire family slept in one bed... a "mattress" on a concrete pad which would be heated in the winter by building a small fire under the concrete pad. Even though it was a difficult time for China, she speaks of how wonderful life was back then, to be with the whole family, quite evenings not interrupted by text messages and emails from the office. Interestingly, after a lifetime of efforts to build a better life, we still reminisce of those times where we had almost nothing except for the time with those we love most. "Always remember your roots".

I would love to hang out with Grandpa. He is quite a craftsman. I can't believe that he actually uses a micrometer, and all of his other tools are primitive. I love this guy!
