Let's take a look at some new pickups and let's re-look at some details on a new Atlas Gp40-2.

I say any N Scale locomotive with ESU LokSound should come with Ditch Lights (if the prototype has ditch lights). That 3045 is missing Ditch Lights front and back + Sun Shades + plows + MU Cables. Atlas should put the extra effort and add more, or do like Fox Valley did with that GP40 you have and at least provide the add-on parts and the indentation of where to drill to add the parts yourself. They can leave it out in their silver series but their gold series should reflect something more than just a DCC sound decoder. I'd be willing to obviously pay more if they did this.

I understand everyone has their must have on the loco but to me cab shades are a must for my locos with MU cables. I have a ton of Atlas locos but plan to switch out to older Kato units. I bought a milling machine so doing a hard wire is simple. I model the 70's so I run older gen locos. You talk about details in locos and rolling stock that scale trains have... well as a wise man told me you get what you pay for. FYI I found on dark colored locos and rolling stock a super fade color, I use tamiya flesh color with just a drop of white mixed thin, to do it in thin coats to you get the shade you want. Back to the GP 40 no ditch lights means more to me than cut levers.

plows, cut levers, MU hoses, and shades you would think would be standard on a top tier model. i can see leaving the grabs off or molding those on - they're delicate and there's a lot of them so if you're trying to stay under $200/unit - that's a good place to cut. But ditch lights - i'm ok if the as-delivered didn't have them, but don't make a later-edition paint scheme where there should have been ditch lights then! i get it all corrected at some point but yeah, that's just a bit annoying. i have a vallejo flesh colored paint... i'll have to see if the coloring works - i am going to do some light weathering this weekend.

A bummer to me that these lack ditch lights. Especially when some of them on this release are in paint schemes that never would've been seen without them. Makes the decision to buy one almost a pass for me and I'm just looking for standard DC.

I have 3 Atlas GP-40s and just like yours, they pull like champs. I agree though, for the price it would be nice to get some more fine details. I paid $260 Canadian a piece for mine.

my GP40s cost me $180 each, which looks like the US dollar is trading 1.37 against the Canadian so about 246 would have been about right - i'm sure your taxes make up the difference - which yes, is a steep price to pay when considering my recent ScaleTrains loco was $254.00 and the detail is fantastically better and more accurate than the Atlas models. they're good workhorse locos though so not a terrible choice to add to the fleet.

Interesting, thanks for sharing! I feel that Atlas qc has been slipping recently and was a bit disappointed with the new Atlas SD60Ms as well. Printing errors and missing details are a disappointment for an upper end model

we get spoiled. Manufacturers like ScaleTrains put so much effort into their details, anything less seems subpar. Atlas molds one body, regardless of road and there's no timeline or road differentiation. that's the major problem. so at $180 bucks, i guess it's livable but i really wish plows and hoses would be standard inclusions at this point.

Many thanks for the intersting review. I would have thought that kind of engine still pulls more than ten cars, even on a grade. What is the Scale Trains machine able to handle?

Thank for the review. I am willing to pay more for grab irons, mu hoses and correct ditch lights. I dont have a good gp 38-2 in my collection but one day. Im getting to the point where i prefer a manufacturer to add these details instead of me. Adding grab irons is a pain. Im glad scale trains just announced there add a 4 axle unit to there n scale lineup just not a fan of the gp 30.

i'm lazy like that - i'd rather buy a detailed loco than detail it myself. that's just not something i enjoy. and there's too many part variations to have to keep on hand for all the locos - so yeah, let's let the manufacturers do it! BUT I am adding at least three of the ScaleTrains GP30-s - that CSX slug is cool plus they're finally making a B unit, even though it's UP so i'll need a UP loco for that. not until spring of next year though, so... plenty of time to save all those pennies for them!

Ever tried to remove the coil hoods on a atlas brand coil car? I can't figure out how to do it without breaking something. They are marketed as "removable".
@AlleghenyNorthern
@AlleghenyNorthern 14 күн бұрын
i haven't tried. the ones i have that are a bit older do not appear removable.

What would you say is the best atlas loco? I'm looking to buy one undecorated and then paint it
@AlleghenyNorthern
@AlleghenyNorthern 14 күн бұрын
ooof. i feel like answering the question of "best loco" is like picking a bar fight with some random dude while drunk. whatever i answer, someone is going to have a different opinion BUT, here it goes anyway... I love the SD40-2s, but i don't know when the last time Atlas made them - if ever, so after that - I like their GP38s and 40s if you're looking for 4 axle power or if larger, their SD60s were readily available. I also really like my little Alco switcher.
