I commented on Ron's comment. I agree with him. I use a foam rasp to ease that top transition from incline to level. You need to do a nice gentle super elevated curve up past the bridge. Instead of using the plaster coat on the incline I use masking tape on my inclines. Do it right and it will last forever. I got that idea from Mike Fifer. Another idea that has worked well is again using masking tape is creating the super elevated curves. Get something smooth like a big piece of tile. Layout a strip of masking tape. Using a straight edge and a sharp hobby knife, cut it lengthwise into narrow strips, a little wider that your rail and as long as your curve. Layout one narrow strip under the curve. Now go back, cut the second strip, but cut it two inches shorter than the first one. When you lay it on top of the first, start one inch in from the end of the first. Keep adding more strips of tape this way until you get the super elevation that looks good to you. Five or six layers ought to do it. Cheap and easy to do and can be removed without damage.

I saw that tape trick on one of the youtube channels, I definitely intend to try that way. I didn't think I should do a super elevation leading so quickly into a turnout.

@@nscaler454 You may need to do some testing in that tight spot. I think you may find yourself pulling the bridge back a bit to to fit in a gentle curve for your modern equipment. That is the one place you do not want to have problems as it is way back in the corner.

@@dkaustin98 100% agree. I "should" be able to get a 15" radius curve there, but I don't want any issues caused by incline to level to turnout.

@@nscaler454 If you have foam working tools, then you should be able to "round" off the area where it transitions from incline to flat. I have done that on mine and then laid track smoothly across that spot. I think it was called a Sure Form. It shaves the foam down with each swipe. Search eBay for Shredder-Hand-Rasp-Shaper-Tool-for-Pottery-Clay-Foam and you will get an idea what the tool looks like. When you get to carving mountains and rivers an oscillating tool like one from Chicago Electric at Harbor Freight works great.

You are making good progress. I would like to suggest that you start the incline to the bridge farther back before where it starts now. The area you have given the track to transition from both incline to straight and from straight to curve is most likely going to give you problems when running trains in the form of car derailments.

I was thinking the same thing. He has a problem there at the top end of the bridge making that transition into a curve. Looks like it is going to be tight.

I agree I need to look at that very carefully. It was suggested to me to ensure I have at least 1 full car length of level track before the switch, otherwise I will likely have derailments. Do you think regardless if the switch is there or not, that derailments are possible having the track level out within a curve?

@@nscaler454 I think the more straight track you can put before the curve the better things will run. The prototypes use what is called an "easement". Which is basically a gradual curve between the straight section and the actual curve. This helps the cars ease into the full radius of the curve instead of abruptly transitioning from straight to curve. Also, for leveling out before the switch, one full car length should work, just try to make that length equal to the wheelbase length of the longest car you plan to run on the layout. A suggested book to read: "Track Planning for Realistic Operations" by John Armstrong published by Kalmbach Books. There are many good ideas in this book that I have used over the years. He explains the "easement" in the book. Link below. kalmbachhobbystore.com/product/book/12148

Hey Nscaler 454 - I came across your channel surfing for Train related vids . I have sub'd to your channel .. Great progress on the Layout ... You are definitely investing time on the structure , which will payoff in the long run ... My Dad's models in N scale , to which I have a vid on my channel on his layout . Check it out when you get a chance . I used to have N scale , but I switched to HO as it was easier on my eyes ( and even servicing locomotives was easier for me ) . Check out my channel when you get a chance . Regards, - Anthony.
