Kat offers this diesel with the Union Pacific paint scheme only in the early version. I wish they would offer it in the mid version as well. ...Roy

+N-Scale Union Pacific Evanston Subdivision You could always get one and repaint it in the scheme you want. Pain in the butt, for sure, but maybe worth it if it's the only way to get what you really want.

One of Santa Fe versions #5072 appears wrong from prototype I only found one photo of the real 5072 The kato model has ditch lights and a low mounted head light But the real one had a high mounted head light and no ditch lights

Keep in mind though, Santa Fe only started moving the headlights and mounting ditch lights in the late 80s and 90s, so if the photo you found is from before this unit was modified, it would have looked like that, but it doesn't necessarily mean it didn't get the nose headlight and ditch lights. Also remember, Kato isn't Athearn or Intermountain, they don't do unit-specific details, they make one shell and just produce a bunch of different schemes and numbers off the same shell, the fact that the Santa Fe SD40-2s have so many prototype details is already far beyond what Kato, or any other company, are usually willing to do.

By the way, I just googled "ATSF 5072" and literally the first photo showed the unit in the 90s with a low mounted headlight - it doesn't have ditch lights in the photo, but looking at the related images, I saw the same unit patched for BNSF with ditch lights. One detail they did get wrong though, which isn't related to the actual shell of the locomotive, is that it appears that 5072 was never leased to Morrison-Knudsen, meaning that the real ATSF 5072 never would have had the "MKM" sublettering under the road number. This would be a really simple fix though, if you really care about detail that much - just a little bit of yellow paint, or nail polish remover over the marking, and it should disappear. I recently bought ATSF number 5058 at a train show, first thing I did when I got home was look it up online, and I found the detailing to generally be accurate to what the unit looked like in the mid-90s, just before MKM started repainting their Santa Fe units. In fact, I couldn't find any details upon immediate inspection that stood out as inaccurate, unless I wanted to model the unit as it was in the 80s with the Oscitrol warning lights.
