I think those led holders (bezels) go through the panel first then you click the led in from behind :)

I used a very similar approach with two minor differences. I had my paper plan laminated. This way it won’t be damaged. I used bi-color led’s that show both red and green according to the through or closed route. Loved your idea of printing directly from AntRail. Brilliant!

Laminating the paper is a great idea I covered the paper with a 2mm plastic sheet to prevent damage on the paper. I also used red and green LED's as an indication for the switch. Red LED indicates a left or right turn and a green LED indicates a straight passage. I thought of putting LED's in series with the track voltage to indicate the trains on particular sections. This would have ment that the wiring would be very complicated so in the end I didn't. I only have some indications of occupied hidden tracks so I know a train is blocking a specific section..

I like your panel setup. I would like to make a suggestion for another way to use your LED's. The Tortoise machines have two sets of auxiliary contacts and if I remember correctly you are using one set to power your turnout frogs. The second set can be used to power the LEDs. It would actually simulate the prototype in that it would be reporting the true position of the points on the turnout. The LEDs would only light after the machine threw completely instead of when the toggle switch is thrown. I love your videos, keep up the great work.

Thanks! That's a good idea, only I believe it would require running wires from the tortoise to the panel.

I have done a similar one using the printout from SCARM. As someone commented below, you can use the other two contacts from any of the various kinds of switch machines (this does not have to be limited to Tortoise.) Since you are using some old CAT-5/6/7 wire, One cable can supply both led and power to two switch machines.

What I do like is the fact you have reserved space for an extension. I didn't think of that and was forced to build an extension afterwards. What I would like to know is the size of the panel. Greetings from the Netherlands.

Would it be possible to use one DPDT switch to control two turnouts? I was thinking about something like a crossover on a double mainline, or both ends of a siding. Throw the switch, and both turnouts align to the diverging track to allow the crossover or access to the siding. Throw it back, and both turnouts align for the through track to shut down the crossover or access to the siding.

Maybe a final plus would be rotating switch stand signal to show you and your loco crews the switching direction of the turnout?

Great video! Question, I noticed that you're using a DPDT (On/On) switch... doesn't the constant flow of power to the switch burn it out? (I thought you needed a DPDT On/Off/On switch?)

I have the power for my switches and tortoises behind a master on/off switch. So when I am not using the layout, or not doing any switching, then there is no power going through. However, from what I know there is very little power/load anyways.

Great video!! Question, with your cross overs @13:16, was there a reason that you chose to drive all 4 of those turnouts individually rather than have both turnouts on a crossover thrown with a single toggle?
@nscaler454
@nscaler454 Жыл бұрын
Probably just easier on my mind and the repetition of wiring. Perhaps a single toggle would be more efficient.

This has only just popped up on my feed so I am very late with comment. I am puzzled as to why you would use two DPDT switches for each cross-over between two tracks when one DPDT switch would run both tortoises?

I probably could have done that. Didn't consider it at the time. I love the comments as often it helps me learn.

Hi there, This is a great tutorial. My layout was created with SCARM, and I am updating my control panels. I have the trial version of AnyRail and have re-created sections with turnouts on SCARM, to it. I have slightly altered the look of the panels to what you have done with yours. The marks for the switches ( 3:55 ), how did you draw them in? I couldn't see any where in AnyRail where those "indicators" are. The LEDs on my existing panels are single colour ones, but to save space, I will be using Bi-colour ones. These have the standard 2 legs on them, but if you use + to the long leg, and - to the short leg as is usual, you get RED,. If you connect + to the short leg, and - to the long leg you get green. Does that make sense? 😕 FWIW, I am trying to to use plexiglass/acrylic panel and painting the track layout on it. I'm not sure yet whether to have tracks in grey/black on white background or white on black back ground. I have to workout how to place the tracks first on the rear of the plexiglass/acrylic.
@nscaler454
@nscaler454 Жыл бұрын
The markings at 3:55 are automatically printed out from the AnyRail export. I didn't select anything specific that I know of to make them appear. I've never used bi-color lights, so I couldn't tell ya how they get wired.

@@nscaler454 Regarding the marks for the switches -- probably has to do with what brand of track you use on AnyRail to design your layout.
