Great job taking out the snow, Have you ever used locktite on the Allen screws to help keep them secured in place? you would have to clean off the oil on them, then the locktite works well preventing them from losing up and falling out, it is especially bad losing them in the snow.but when the snow is gone you can use a magnet to find the lost Allen screws. great video I like your “official incident counter” barry

I'm going one step further. Loctite 680 glues the sprocket to the jackshaft and is stronger than a key or a set screw. Heat it up to remove the sprocket.
@MatthewBerginGarage

Not too bad considering the wet heavy snow. Good for snow balls not so much for plowing. Double set screws and blue Loctite is the way to go. I have the same issues at work with a chain driven conveyor system for moving 30000 lb coils. The chain is a little bigger though.😊🙋‍♂
@MillBrookRailroad

Blue loctite is too weak. I consulted with Henkel Corporation, and they sent me a sample of green 680.
@MatthewBerginGarage
@MatthewBerginGarage Жыл бұрын
@@MillBrookRailroadWe get away with the blue because the sprockets also use woodruff keys which gives them a bit more support. 680 is good stuff we use it as a bearing retainer. Some of our mills date back to the early 50's and a lot of the bearing bores become worn after a multitude of repairs and the 680 keeps them in their place.
@duanedale2505
@duanedale2505 Жыл бұрын
A little loctite on the screws like someone said will stop them from coming loose. Also drilling a bit into the shaft so the screw has a bit of countersink will help it get more bite. Renolds makes a heavier grade of chain or even the chain you have should have a heavier grade with thicker links available
@MillBrookRailroad

The broken chain was soaked in battery acid. I'd had a derailment early in the season that caused a battery leak. After replacing the battery, I lubed up the chain and figured I'd get as many runs in as I could. Turns out, it was more damaged than I realized.
@MillBrookRailroad

As far as loctite goes: I did ask the folks that make the stuff if they had anything that would fix my slipping sprockets. They sent me a package. Loctite 680.

@MillBrookRailroad

What's making the chains and sprockets fail is the excessive force of slipping and gripping at full throttle. It is excessive abuse. I think I've come up with a solution, though. You'll see that in a video I'm editing.

So......the Mill Brook RR, is it a freight hauling railroad or a snow plow railroad? LOL I think the RR does more snow plowing than freight hauling. New Slogan, The Mill Brook, route of the snow machine. HA HA. Thankfully it is spring now and this white crap will go away. :) on the set screw issues, could you grind a flat spot on the shaft for them and then use locktite on the threads? Oh as I typed that you said you didn't have any locktite. :)

I know it could be an expensive mod but perhaps getting a machinist to cut out the axles/sprockets and install a key way would work better than just a set screw into a round shaft?

The chain had some damage from a leaky battery, so it was on borrowed time, anyway. The 70 has basically the same drive train and hasn't had this problem, so I think I can safely say it's not the chain size.

Very nice. Your plow has some good rolling action in the lighter snow. It rolls the heavy stuff nicely, too. I've heard SP guys call the heavy stuff on the West side of the Sierras,"concrete snow", because it handles like wet concrete. Why is it things mechanical can't fail when it's sunny and 72°? Is it some unwritten law of the universe? Nice video just the same.

It's hard to see on the video but from what I see your set screws are well recessed in your sprockets. If that's the case after tightening the setscrew install a second one on top of the first. This will lock the screw in place.

The slipping and gripping going on while plowing could also break the teeth on gears. I have a locomotive in storage that has gears instead of chains and it has a different set of issues related to plowing snow. I caught both traction motors on fire.

You know, I just realized something... many times I've noted that, besides being old-timers, a lot of the "Live RRers" (7 1/4" scale, etc.) tend to be, uh, rather stout. I always thought they were just fat, maybe out of shape. But now I realize that ain't 'fat', it's ballast! This increases their tractive effort, which makes sense why they keep the weight on. FREE ballast. What a great idea - and tell the wife she can stop griping about being "overweight"... Hon, it's just ballast for the railroad! And Aaron, I'm NOT talking about you... you just may need some more 'ballast'!!!
